Family’s tolerance of verbal abuse is red flag for girlfriend

DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend and I have been together for almost a year and a half. In the beginning, he kept his family and me apart. I thought it was because they were extremely close, but turns out he was doing me a favor given their inappropriate and cruel treatment of one another. At my boyfriend’s birthday lunch, his father called his mother the worst possible word anyone could call a female. My boyfriend and his sisters didn’t seem phased by his verbal abuse. I worry his parents’ toxic and unloving relationship is something he will eventually settle for in ...

Berwick offense scores 3 TDs in scrimmages

The Berwick High School offense scored three times and its defense, twice, in the team’s Black and Gold intrasquad scrimmage Friday at Geisler Stadium.
Berwick quarterback Mitchell Sanford completed a pass to Kenan Jones across the middle that the LSU commit turned into an 85-yard touchdown reception.
The defense came back, though, with its own score as Denver Jenkins returned an interception about 22 yards for a touchdown.
Later, the defense got a safety, while the offense finished the scrimmage with two more touchdowns.
“We gave up some big plays today, but I thought the scrimmage did what we needed to do,” Berwick Defensive Coordinator Brandon Bravata said. "We needed to get some full-speed tackling, full reps and really test our endurance a little bit, especially at this time of day, running as many plays as we did at a time.”
The offense's next score after the safety came when Collin Louviere rolled to his right and found Josh Jones. Jones broke the defensive containment and raced for a 67-yard touchdown completion.
Later, Sanford completed a pass to Travis Whitehead, who made a nice catch in coverage and turned it into a 45 yard completion, part of which was negated by a block-in-the-back penalty. However, Sanford connected with Kenan Jones for a 33-yard completion before Josh Jones ended the scrimmage with a 12-yard touchdown run.
“Offensively, we’ve got to get better,” second-year Berwick Coach Eric Holden said. “I didn’t think we executed well early on. I think we kind of settled down and got better and made a couple of corrections and some adjustments, and the guys kind of got comfortable again.”
Berwick will return to action Friday when it plays South Plaquemines at 6 p.m. in Morgan City High School’s Taco Bell Jamboree at Tiger Stadium in Morgan City.

Guidry Stadium Friday. Central Catholic’s Davidyione Bias scored two rushing touchdowns, while DeDe Gant caught a third touchdown for the offense from quarterback Ryan Miller on a long pass. “I thought we played well,” Central Catholic Coach Tommy Minton said. “It’s a scrimmage. You start out. We got a bunch of young kids. We made some mistakes, but I felt like as the scrimmage went longer and longer, we got more productive on offense,

MCHS continues preseason work with intrasquad scrimmage

Morgan City High School held its secondto-last dress rehearsal in Friday’s Green and White scrimmage at Tiger Stadium. The first unit -- the offense and the defense -- had its moments. For the first-team offense, Alex Brocato got the start under center with Ike Escort also getting reps. Brocato moved the green group with a couple pass completions. But, the offense struggled early finding its rhythm. Enter Escort, who had two nice runs after pressure moved him out of the pocket. The big plays, however, didn’t lead to any first-half scoring. “The defense is ahead of the offense this ...

Patterson scores a TD in scrimmage with St. James

The Patterson High School Lumberjacks scored one touchdown in their preseason scrimmage at St. James Thursday. Patterson’s touchdown, a long run by Dajon Richard in the final of three 10-minute quarters, put the Lumberjacks on the scoreboard. Patterson first-year head coach Ryan Stewart said he thought the final score was 21-7 in favor of St. James. “Things went good,” Stewart said. “We saw some good things, saw some bad things. Defensively was a surprise. They played pretty good. Offensively, we had some issues up front. Of course they got a really good defensive tackle who kind of dominated the game.
