MCHS sweeps Berwick in 10th annual Pink Game

Morgan City High School swept Berwick 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-22) in Morgan City’s 10th annual Pink Game Monday in Morgan City.
Prior to the game, Morgan City and Berwick players gathered to present a check valued at $7,058.60 to Roots and Ribbons, a local foundation that will distribute the money to help St. Mary Parish Cancer patients.
Additionally, each school had an honorary server, Morgan City High School’s was Colleen Hammonds Keller, aunt of Morgan City High School statistician Bailee Hoggatt, while Berwick’s was Antionette “Netty” Small, a Berwick High School teach who is battling breast cancer.
As for the District 8-III match, Berwick seized the momentum in the first games before Morgan City rallied later in each set for the win.
In game one, Berwick took as much as a 7-2 lead on Maci Broussard’s ace before Morgan City rallied to take the lead on the third of three Allie Vincent aces.
The game went back and forth before Morgan City seized the lead for good at 14-13 on a Berwick hitting error out of bounds.
In game two, Berwick jumped out again to a 7-2 lead after a Morgan City service error.
While Morgan City cut its deficit later in the set, Berwick held onto the lead for quite some time before Morgan City tied the game at 15 on Karmen Peterson’s kill and took its first lead on Sh’Diamond Holly’s kill.
The Lady Tigers never trailed the remainder of the contest.
In game three, Morgan City never trailed, taking as much as a seven-point lead at 17-10 on a Berwick hit in the net.
However, the Lady Panthers rallied and got the score within two points multiple times, the last n a Morgan City service error to cut its deficit to 23-21.
Morgan City, though, closed out the game, scoring two of the last three points to win the match 25-22.
Kennedy Hebert led Morgan City with 13 kills, one assist, one ace, six digs and two solo blocks. Other top Morgan City contributors were Holly, 12 kills and one solo block; Jolee Nini, 28 assists, two aces and two digs; Haylie Crappell, one kill, two aces and four digs; Vincent, two aces and nine digs; and McKenzi Smith, five digs.
Alyssa Gray led Berwick with four kills, seven assists, one ace, 14 digs and one solo block. Other top Berwick contributors were Lauren Skinner, six kills, two digs, one solo block and one block assist; Brittany Roberie, three aces and 16 digs; Henry, five assists and 10 digs; Broussard, two aces and seven digs; Abby Sanford, nine digs; Morgan Toups, one kill, three digs and one solo block; Ryleigh Arnold, one assist, three digs and one solo block; and Katie Conrad, two kills, one dig and one block assist.
Berwick finishes 2-2 at tournament
The Berwick Lady Panthers finished 2-2 at Baton Rouge High’s tournament this weekend, defeating Runnels and Division II Woodlawn but falling to Division I Baton Rouge High and University Lab.
Against Runnels, Berwick won 2-0 (25-16, 25-10).
Berwick had 10 aces in the victory.
Gray led Berwick with three kills, three assists, one ace and four digs. Other top Berwick contributors were Hanna McCue, six kills and one assist; Henry, six assists, one ace and two digs; and Roberie, five aces and two digs.
Against Baton Rouge High, Berwick fell 2-0 (25-7, 25-12).

Against University Lab, Berwick fell 2-0 (25-8, 25-18).
Henry led Berwick with one kill, five assists and seven digs. Other top Berwick contributors were Gray, one kill, one assist and six digs; McCue, three kills, two digs and one solo block; and Broussard and Sanford, one ace and three digs apiece.

weekend games
The Morgan City Lady Tigers split its games Saturday as the squad fell to Division 2 South Terrebonne before defeating Division 1 Central Lafourche.
Both matches went to five games.
Against South Terrebonne, ranked No. 5 in last week’s Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings, Morgan City fell 3-2. Morgan City dropped game one 25-20 before winning game two 25-18. The Lady Tigers fell in game three 25-5 before winning game four 25-21. South Terrebonne won the fifth-and-deciding game 15-7.
Against Central Lafourche, Morgan City dropped the first two games by scores of 25-19 and 25-18 before winning three straight games by scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 15-9.
No individual statistics were available for either game.

Police: Two caught with meth after vehicle chase

Two suspects were caught with methamphetamine and rock salt made to appear to be methamphetamine after they led authorities on a high-speed chase from Morgan City to Centerville, Morgan City Police Chief James Blair said in a news release.

—Chris M. Smith Jr., 32, of Shivers Street in Patterson, was arrested at 2:16 a.m. Tuesday on charges of possession of methamphetamine, false representation of a controlled dangerous substance, aggravated flight from an officer, aggravated obstruction of highway commerce, improper lane usage, disregard of traffic control, improper turning and speeding and on warrants charging him with parole violation.

—Christian E. Businelle, 20, of Versen Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 2:16 a.m. Tuesday on charges of possession of methamphetamine, false representation of a controlled dangerous substance and obstruction of justice.

Patrol officers observed a vehicle being operated in the area of Sixth Street in Morgan City in an erratic manner crossing the center line into the opposing lane of travel. Officers attempted to initiate a stop at which time the vehicle fled from officers, Blair said.

The vehicle crossed over the La. 182 bridge into Berwick at speeds much higher than the posted speed limit, Blair said. The vehicle traveled west onto U.S. 90 at dangerous speeds causing vehicles off the roadway, disregarding traffic controls and negotiating improper turns, the chief said. The vehicle allegedly reached speeds over 100 mph.

The vehicle entered onto La. 317 in the Centerville area and turned into an apartment complex in the area. The vehicle then attempted to exit the complex striking a stop sign coming to a stop, Blair said.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office assisted with the stop. Two people were taken into custody. Smith was identified as the operator of the vehicle, and Businelle was identified as an occupant.

Smith and Businelle were in possession of suspected methamphetamine and suspected rock salt, which was purported to be methamphetamine, Blair said. Police found evidence that Businelle destroyed suspected marijuana during the investigation, the chief said.

Smith was found to have an active arrest warrant through probation and parole. Smith and Businelle were jailed.

Blair reported responding to 42 calls and reported the following arrests:

—Cheyenne H. Aucoin, 23, of Main Street in Franklin, was arrested at 9 a.m. Monday on a warrant charging her with probation violation. Aucoin was located and arrested at the police department on a city court warrant. Aucoin was jailed.

—Christopher Sylvester, 21, of Short Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 9:27 a.m. Monday on a warrant charging him with probation violation.

Sylvester was located and arrested in the area of Mallard Street on a probation and parole warrant. Sylvester was jailed.

—Joshua A. Falgout, 38, of Sycamore Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 10:13 a.m. Monday on a city court warrant charging him with failure to appear for trial.

Falgout was located and arrested at the George County Correctional Center in Lucedale, Mississippi, on a Morgan City Court warrant. Falgout was jailed.

—Brian H. Henderson, 34, of Utah Street in Berwick, was arrested at 7:35 p.m. Monday on charges of possession of marijuana, flight from an officer, driving under suspension and improper lane usage.

—Joseph Cagnolatti, 22, of Railroad Avenue in Morgan City, was arrested at 7:35 p.m. Monday on a charge of possession of marijuana.

Narcotics division investigators observed a vehicle being operated in an erratic manner crossing the center line into the opposing lane of travel in the area of La. 182. Police attempted to initiate a stop at which time the vehicle crossed into Berwick failing to stop, Blair said.

The vehicle came to a stop on Utah Street. The driver was identified as Henderson. Cagnolatti was an occupant in the vehicle. Henderson’s driver’s license was found to be under suspension, Blair said. The duo was also in possession of suspected marijuana, Blair said. Henderson and Cagnolatti were jailed.

—Lori F. Thibodeaux, 34, of Southland Circle in Houma, was arrested at 9:39 p.m. Monday on a charge of prostitution-solicitation.

Narcotics division investigators received information in regard to prostitution in the Morgan City area. During the investigation, Thibodeaux was identified as a suspect, Blair said. Police found evidence linking Thibodeaux to prostitution, Blair said.

Thibodeaux agreed to meet investigators at a hotel in the Morgan City Area, the chief said. Thibodeaux was taken into custody in the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and jailed.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported responding to 46 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrest relating to east St. Mary Parish:

—Matthew Miller, 23, of Marshall Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 4:27 p.m. Monday on two warrants charging him with failure to comply with the terms and conditions of drug court.

Miller turned himself in at the St. Mary Parish Courthouse in Franklin and was transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. Bail is set at $200,000.

Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrest:

—Ashley Chiasson, 32, of Adams Street in Raceland, was arrested at 2:32 a.m. Tuesday on charges of driving under suspension, no turn signal, possession of drug paraphernalia and on a Lafourche Parish warrant charging her with failure to appear in court. Chiasson was awaiting transport to Lafourche Parish jail.

Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrest:

—Jason D. Smith, 35, of Cherry Street in Houma, was arrested at 3 a.m. Tuesday on a charge of appearing intoxicated in public. Cash bail was set at $373.

Atchafalaya royalty will appear at festival

The entire court of the Lower Atchafalaya River Pageant will be introduced at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Morey Park during the Patterson Main Street Fall Festival and Historic Walking Tour.
Mallory Perry of Patterson High School was crowned as the first Miss Lower Atchafalaya River Queen.
Rochelle Bergeron of Morgan City High School was crowned Teen Queen.
The city of Patterson held its first Lower Atchafalaya River Pageant Oct. 8 at the Patterson Area Civic Center in which seven women from the Tri-City area competed for the crown.
“We had some inquiries about having Patterson royalty, and we had a good following so we just decided to go with it,” said Ryan Aucoin, community affairs director.
The pageant crowned two queens, Miss Lower Atchafalaya River Teen Queen and Miss Lower Atchafalaya River Queen, while the rest of the participants were dubbed ambassadors of the pageant.
The pageant was attended by other festival royalties such as the Harvest Moon Festival and La. Crawfish Festival queens. Community officials and members were in attendance as well.

Police Reports 10-24-17

Franklin Police Chief Sabria McGuire reported the following arrests:
Timothy Jones, 29, of Denae Drive, New Iberia, was arrested Saturday at 12:31 a.m. on warrants for charges of violation of probation and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Jones was booked, processed, and remains incarcerated at the Franklin Police Department.
Precious Danos, 44, of Taft St., Patterson, was arrested Saturday at 12:31 a.m. on a warrant for 17th Judicial District Court for failure to appear on the charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Danos was booked, processed, and held with no bond set at the time of press release.
Reginald Martin, 42, of Bigler St., Franklin, was arrested Saturday at 6:15 p.m. on charges of simple burglary two counts, criminal trespass four counts, littering two counts and attempted burglary. Martin was additionally charged with parole violation and a warrant for the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office for the charge of simple burglary. Martin was booked, processed, and remains incarcerated at the Franklin Police Department.
Cheyenne Aucoin, 23, of Main Street, Franklin, was arrested Friday at 8:56 p.m. on a warrant for probation violation. Aucoin was booked, processed, and transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center.
Matthew Caprito, 21, of Oakwood Drive, Franklin, was arrested Saturday at 10:26 p.m. on the charges of driving while intoxicated - first offense, speeding and hit and run. Caprito was booked, processed, and released on a $3,750 bond.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported the following arrests:
Darien Mitchell, 20, of 1302 Adrian St., Apt. 127, New Iberia, was arrested Monday at 7:09 p.m. on the charge of possession of Schedule I marijuana.
Narcotics detectives patrolling the Franklin area observed a vehicle traveling on Willow Street without any headlights. Detectives conducted a traffic stop. While speaking with the occupants, detectives smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the car. They received consent to search the vehicle and located marijuana on a passenger seat where Mitchell was sitting. Mitchell was released on a summons.
Matthew Miller, 23, of 512 Marshall St., Morgan City, was arrested Monday at 4:27 p.m. on two warrants for failure to comply with the terms and conditions of drug court. Miller turned himself in at the St. Mary Parish Courthouse in Franklin and was transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. Bail is set at $200,000.
Tonya Conner, 35, of 156 Derek St., Pierre Part, was arrested Monday at 7:52 p.m. on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Conner turned herself in at the St. Mary parish Law Enforcement Center. Conner was released on a recognizance bond.
Zackery Conde, 38, of 3425 La. 87, Franklin, was arrested Tuesday at 1:21 a.m. on a warrant for probation violation and on a 2013 warrant for charges of two counts improper lane usage, aggravated flight from an officer, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle upon a police officer, resisting an officer with force or violence, hit and run driving and criminal trespass.
The warrant was issued after a September 2013 investigation into the unauthorized use of a vehicle. Deputies located the suspect, Conde, driving the vehicle on La. 87 and initiated a traffic stop. Conde drove off the highway and onto a dirt road where he came to a stop. A deputy ordered him to exit the vehicle. Conde accelerated toward the deputy. Conde then drove back onto the highway and onto another dirt road where he crashed the vehicle and fled on foot. Deputies obtained a warrant for his arrest. Conde was booked into the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center from an out of parish jurisdiction. No bail is set.

NORMAND BERGERON

Normand Bergeron, 64, a resident of Morgan City, La. and native of St. Landry Parish, passed Sunday October 22, 2017 at 6:45 p.m. at Morgan City Healthcare Center.
Visitation will be observed on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at Jones Funeral Home, 715 Sixth St., Morgan City, La., from 9 a.m. until funeral services at 1 p.m., Reverend Derby Doucet, will officiate the services. Burial will follow funeral services in the Morgan City Cemetery in Morgan City, La.
Memories of Normand will forever remain in the hearts of his three sons, Andre (Jessica) Green, Norman Adams and Jarvis Welch; two daughters, Mrs. Terrell (Norma) Welch-Jones, and Latia Bergeron; four brothers, Clovis (Patricia) Bergeron, Jr. of Houston, TX, Ronald Bergeron of Jacksonville, FL, Wayne Brigett of Patterson, La. and Ralph Brooks of Houma, La.; seven sisters, Julia Bergeron of Scott, La., Mary Bergeron, Linda Bergeron, Rox Bergeron, Johnell Bergeron and Gail Granger all of Morgan City, La., and Reatha Hilliard of Gray, La. and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Sugar cane harvest off to solid start

Early signs point to a good sugar cane harvest this year, but the weather in the coming weeks will dictate how the season finishes, according to industry officials. Mike Accardo of Patterson began harvesting sugar cane about 1½ weeks ago. Accardo, who farms 3,000 acres of sugar cane from Calumet to Berwick with his cousin, takes the cane to Sterling Sugars in Franklin to be processed. Accardo normally begins harvesting earlier but had some extra acres to plant for next year’s crop. Sugar content in the cane is “pretty good,” and the overall size of the crop looks to be ...
