Sugar cane harvest off to solid start

Early signs point to a good sugar cane harvest this year, but the weather in the coming weeks will dictate how the season finishes, according to industry officials. Mike Accardo of Patterson began harvesting sugar cane about 1½ weeks ago. Accardo, who farms 3,000 acres of sugar cane from Calumet to Berwick with his cousin, takes the cane to Sterling Sugars in Franklin to be processed.
