Pool Do's expands menu to become temporary restaurant

With a state mandate severely limiting its services, Pool Do’s Sports Bar in Morgan City has gotten creative as it recently transitioned to a Pool Do’s Restaurant.
While co-owner Rocky Roussell said the move only will be a temporary one as they will go back to being a bar after Gov. John Bel Edward’s mandate on bars being limited to curbside service is lifted, he said it is a way to pay bills and keep his employees on the payroll.
“I don’t know if we could make much money doing this, but it can help keep the place for us rather than lose the place, and it gives the girls some income,” Roussell said Wednesday. “Most of them are going to school and paying their way through school.”
One of those workers, Madison Doiron, is attending Nicholls State University in Thibodaux where she is majoring in mass communication and marketing.
“I pay for all my bills, and I live on my own,” she said, noting she depends a lot on her job for everything.
Fellow employee Taylor Verret has two children and just bought a house. She said that living off unemployment each month without enhanced benefits is not enough to live on.
“It’s been financially a struggle,” she said.
Then, there’s also the risk of catching the virus, Verret said, noting that anytime employees possibly may have been exposed through interaction with the public at work, they have to pay for the testing.
Pool Do’s is among a group of Acadiana bars that currently are battling Edwards in federal court to remain open as they were with limited capacity prior to Edwards’ mandate in early July that limited them to curbside service. Edwards argued the spread of the virus is linked to bars. A hearing was held in Lafayette in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana on their preliminary injunction Monday, and they are awaiting a ruling on the matter.
The governor’s ruling already has been upheld in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
“I think it went as well as to be expected,” Roussell said of the western district hearing. “I don’t think we expected to overturn the governor. I think our main goal here is just to show that we do care, and we want to be open, try to put a little pressure.”
He said Pool Do’s simply wants compensation to try to stay in business with the restrictions in place.
While Pool Do’s offered a limited menu when it was operating as a bar, it has expanded its offerings with its new food permit as a restaurant.
“We try to increase it a little bit each week, try to get the kitchen a little bigger,” Roussell said. “We’re in the process of doing that. We’re not going to quit.”
So far, the change has not been bad, Roussell said.
“Actually, a little better than I thought,” he said of the restaurant, open to those ages 18 and older because video poker machines are not in an enclosed area.
Verret said that the customers have helped, too.
“Thankfully, we have a lot of loyal regulars, and everybody’s been really supportive (and) understanding making us into a restaurant,” she said.
The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.

TD 13 expected to become tropical storm Thursday

According to the National Weather Service Hurricane Center in Miami, Tropical Depression 13 is moving west-northwest at 21 mph with little change of strength as of the 5 a.m. advisory.
It was located at 15.2N, 49.8W about 905 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. On the forecast track, the depression is expected to move near or north of the northern Leeward Islands by late Friday and near or north of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Saturday.
Gradual strengthening is forecast, and the depression is expected to become a tropical storm Thursday.
The National Hurricane Center forecast shows Tropical Depression 13 approaching Florida and the Gulf of Mexico as a strong tropical storm by early next week. But there are many factors hindering the storm including the possibility it could move over the Greater Antilles this weekend.
In the center Caribbean Sea, showers and thunderstorms continue to become better organized and became Tropical Depression 14 as the system approaches the northwestern Caribbean Sea.
This disturbance will likely produce heavy rains across a large portion of Central America and southeastern Mexico late this week and this weekend. Formation chance through 48 hours to five days is 90%.
A tropical wave over western Africa is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. This wave is expected to move over the far eastern tropical Atlantic on Friday, and some slow development is possible through the weekend while it moves west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph across the eastern tropical Atlantic.
Formation chance through 48 hours is 10% and through five days is 40%.

Conrad, Metal Shark earn national safety honors

WASHINGTON — The Shipbuilders Council of America — the national association representing the U.S. shipyard industry — has announced three Louisiana shipyards received awards for enhancement of operations, and promotion of safety and accident prevention.
The 2020 awardees include Conrad Shipyard (Morgan City) which received SCA’s “Improvement in Safety” award, and Bollinger Shipyards (Lockport) and Metal Shark (Franklin) received SCA’s “Excellence in Safety” award, the Shipbuilders Council of America said in its news release.
Through proactive approaches and dedication to improved safety and health of their employees, Bollinger Shipyards, Conrad Shipyard and Metal Shark are among 13 shipyards awarded nationally for their continued advancement of employee safety in the shipyard industry.
“Shipyards are complex work environments and safety of employees is critical. Bollinger Shipyards, Conrad Shipyard and Metal Shark have made advancements in safety year over year which reflects a deep commitment to the workforce that powers our shipyards and industrial base,” said SCA President Matthew Paxton. “The Shipbuilders Council is proud to recognize them and the hardworking men and women who reflect the shipyard industry’s reputation as one of the safest heavy industries year after year,”
Accepting the award on behalf of Conrad Shipyard, Senior Vice President Daniel Conrad stated, “Conrad Shipyard is committed to building, supporting and continuously improving our safety culture. This award is in recognition of our team’s consistent efforts in the improvement of our safety program.
“I am especially proud that our company’s commitment to its safety philosophy has resulted in a safe work environment for our employees and fosters an environment in which all employees have a voice in the continuous improvement of our safety program.”
“Metal Shark is pleased to have won the SCA Award for Excellence in Safety for the fourth year in a row,” said Metal Shark CEO Chris Allard. “This award is a testament to the commitment to safety that runs throughout our organization, our strong shipyard management, and the dedication of our hard working men and women. To have won this award for four years in a row is especially impressive considering our considerable growth during this period as well as our output of over 200 vessels per year, and we are incredibly proud of our team.”
“Bollinger Shipyards is proud to have earned the SCA Award for Excellence in Safety for the 15th consecutive year,” said Bollinger President and CEO Ben Bordelon. “This exceptional achievement is attributable to and only made possible by the unyielding focus of our workforce to uphold our pledge and commitment to obtain the highest level of workplace safety in our industry. This year’s award is especially meaningful given the unprecedented times and challenges which we’re facing as a nation. I want to commend the resilience and dedication of our employees who, despite the threat of global pandemic, continue to work safely and efficiently. In the evolving field of occupational safety and health, Bollinger Shipyards remains committed to building a culture of safety excellence in the maritime industry.”
Over the last decade, the industry has continued to place an emphasis on the importance of safety in shipyards and has continuously seen a decline in recorded injuries, council’s news release said. Due to the culture of safety, the industry has been able to naturally adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic to make sure employees are healthy while important work is still getting done.
So far in 2020, the shipbuilding industry continues to see a decline in recorded injuries and safety issues.
SCA member companies are eligible for a safety award if they submit the SCA Injury & Illness survey for all four quarters, have zero fatalities throughout the year, and either have a total recordable incident rate below the SCA average, or if they reduce their year-on-year rate by 10% or more.
—Shipbuilders Council of America members constitute the shipyard industrial base that builds, repairs, maintains and modernizes U.S. Navy ships and craft, U.S. Coast Guard vessels of all sizes, as well as vessels for other U.S. government agencies. In addition, SCA members build, repair and service America’s fleet of commercial vessels. The council represents 40 companies that own and operate over 80 shipyards, with facilities on all three U.S. coasts, the Great Lakes, the inland waterways system, Alaska and Hawaii.

Safety is priority as 2020 Census workers begin in-person visits

In carrying out its respective missions, the U.S. Census Bureau and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have announced a commitment to protect the health and safety of those being served by the agencies and those they employ.
The Census Bureau has workings attempting to contact those who did not respond to the 2020 Census through the mail. Participation in 2020 Census interviews should present a low risk of transmission of COVID-19, the agencies said in a news release.
Census takers are trained to rigorously and universally follow these CDC recommendations to mitigate risk of transmission:
—Wearing of face masks.
—Maintaining social distance of 6 feet or more.
—Practicing hand hygiene.
—Not entering homes, and conducting interviews outside as much as possible or practical.
Household members encountered by census staff are encouraged to maintain social distances during interviews and practice the CDC’s other recommendations as much as possible.
The CDC stands ready to support the work of the Census Bureau and its staff in providing consultation and technical assistance to ensure that relevant data and findings are communicated in a timely fashion to keep Census field staff and household members safe and healthy.
