Matte: Flooding demonstrates need for permanent Bayou Chene gate

A permanent floodgate on Bayou Chene likely would have allowed officials to prevent some of the recent flooding in lower St. Martin Parish, St. Mary Levee District Executive Director Tim Matte said. The St. Mary Parish Levee District Commission met Thursday at the Parish Courthouse. The Atchafalaya River crested June 1 at about 7.2 feet in Morgan City. Armond Duhon trial to start in major theft case

A defendant allegedly involved in helping steal millions of dollars from a Morgan City-based investment holdings company is set to go to trial next week. Armond Duhon, 63, of Morgan City, will go to trial Monday for criminal charges of racketeering, money laundering and numerous counts of theft from Capital Management Consultants Inc., a Morgan City company. Duhon is the husband of Karen Duhon, a former bookkeeper for Capital Management. Capital Management alleged in a December 2014 lawsuit that its former controller, CPA Scott Tucker, was the leader behind a conspiracy to steal as much as $30 million from the ...

Four area softball players earn Louisiana Softball Coaches Association All-State honors

Four Tri-City area softball players were recognized by the Louisiana Softball Coaches Association in their respective classes with all-state honors.
In Class 4A, Morgan City had three representatives, pitcher Kennedy Hebert, c a t c h e r S c o t t i e Metrejean and outfielder Allie Vincent.
In Class 1A, Central Catholic senior Hallie Autin made the team as an infielder.
Autin finished her senior season with a .545 batting average.
Central Catholic advanced to the Division IV semifinals before falling to eventual state runner-up Vermilion Catholic on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In Class 4A, Hebert, Metrejean and Vincent are each juniors. Hebert finished the season with a 25-4 record on the mound, while she hit .566 in the lead-off spot for Morgan City. Metrejean batted .396, while Vincent batted .438 this season.
Morgan City advanced to the Class 4A quarterfinals for the first time since 2004.
Morgan City was joined on the team by senior Kassi Leonard of District 7-4A rival Assumption. Leonard, an outfielder, hit .402 this season.
North DeSoto’s Lori McFerren was named the 4A Coach of the Year.
In Class 1A, other representatives from District 7-1A, which Central Catholic competed in, include Vermilion Catholic senior pitcher Taylor Abshire, Hanson Memorial junior catcher Kaylee Broussard, Vermilion Catholic senior outfielder Bella Doucet, Vermilion Catholic sophomore shortstop Ainsley Mallet and Hanson Memorial junior shortstop Allyssa Young. Abshire hit had a 19-1 pitching record and hit .351 this season, while Broussard batted .421. Doucet hit .507, Mallett, .479, and Young, .494.
Julie Riser of Division IV state champion Cedar Creek was chosen Class 1A Coach of the Year.

June 10, 1928 — June 5, 2017 John T. “Tommy” Harrison Sr., a native and longtime resident of Laurel, was called home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 88 on Monday, June 5, 2017, at his son’s home in Bayou Vista, Louisiana, just five days shy of his 89th birthday. ALISKA RICE BABIN

Aliska Rice Babin, 85, a native of New Orleans, a resident of Bogalusa and former resident of Amelia, joined her Father in heaven on Tuesday, June 6, 2017.
Aliska is survived by three daughters, Aliska Migliore of Bay St. Louis, Ernestine “Tina” Jenkins and husband Danny, and Linda Manos; granddaughter Tara Ristenbatt; great-granddaughter, Penelope Valasquez; and a very special friend, Mrs. Bessie Thomas.
Aliska was preceded in death by her parents, John and Aliska Rice; and three husbands, John Migliore, Harold Blood and Lester Babin.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 9, 2017, at Hargrave Funeral Home in Morgan City from 11 a.m. until service time at noon. Graveside services will be in the Morgan City Cemetery.
