Vehicular homicide charged against Franklin resident

A Franklin man has been charged with vehicular homicide by Louisiana State Police.
Shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday, troopers from Troop I responded a single vehicle fatality crash on US 90 eastbound near La. 318 west of Baldwin. The crash claimed the life of 28-year-old Clarence Verrett Jr. of Franklin.
The initial investigation by state police reportedly indicated that the crash occurred as 24-year-old Thaiim Guilbeau of Franklin was driving a 2015 Dodge truck eastbound on US 90. For unknown reasons, Guilbeau’s vehicle traveled off of the left side of the roadway and struck a metal guardrail. Guilbeau’s vehicle continued traveling east in the median before overturning and coming to rest partially submerged in a drainage canal.
Guilbeau was wearing a seat belt and sustained minor injuries. He was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries. Verrett, the front seat passenger, was properly restrained but was pronounced dead on scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office.
Impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash, state police report. Toxicology samples were taken from Guilbeau and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Upon his release from the hospital, Guilbeau was charged with vehicular homicide, driving while under suspension for DWI and careless operation. Guilbeau was booked at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center. This crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Troopers remind motorists that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.

Cleco fan donation to COA

Cleco donates 440 fans to help the elderly stay cool and save money
St. Mary Council on Aging was among 440 agencies to receive donations of fans from Cleco.
Cleco partnered with councils on aging and other agencies to donate fans to the elderly across Louisiana.
“The importance of the Cleco Fan Drive is two-fold,” Shirley Turner, vice president of customer experience, said. “Because air conditioners are typically the largest energy users in a home, raising the thermostat and using a fan can help the air temperature feel 10 degrees cooler and reduce energy bills.”
In addition to adjusting thermostats for energy efficiency, Cleco recommends the following tips to help lower electric bills.
—Install a programmable thermostat and raise the setting to the highest comfortable temperature. You can save three to five percent on your air conditioning costs for each degree you raise the thermostat.
—Seal holes and cracks around doors and windows.
—Keep curtains and blinds closed during the day
—Use heat generating appliances, such as clothes dryers or the oven, in the evening when temperatures are cooler
—Clean or change air filters regularly.
—Take advantage of Cleco’s Energy Depot which helps you analyze your home energy use and generates customized energy saving tips. To access the Energy Depot, visit www.cleco.com.
“For 17 years, the annual Cleco Fan Drive has raised funds and collected fans to donate across our service territory,” Jennifer Cahill, manager of public relations said. “Through the generosity of Cleco employees, customers and communities, we were able to give nearly 450 fans to the 22 participating agencies across the state.”
Senior citizens living in the Cleco service territory should contact a participating agency to request a fan.

Hebert, Metrejean earn 4A All-State recognition

Two softball players represented Morgan City High School on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 4A All-State team.
Junior pitcher Kennedy Hebert was a first-team selection, while junior catcher Scottie Metrejean earned honorable mention status.
It was fitting the duo made all-state considering they have been playing together since they were youngsters.
“They got a good combination going together with a pitcher-and-catcher combo, and they’ve done a lot of good things,” Morgan City Assistant Softball Coach Joseph Hebert said of the duo. “They both work really, really hard to achieve the success that they’ve both had. It hasn’t come easy for them. They both work really, really hard, but the results are there from all the hard work that they’ve put in.”
Hebert was a standout on the mound and at the plate for the Lady Tigers this season.
She recorded a 25-4 mark and a 0.69 ERA on the mound. In 189 innings, she surrendered 35 walks and fanned 267.
Offensively, she hit .566 with 11 doubles, 11 triples and six home runs and 55 RBIs. She hit for the cycle twice and only fanned four times.
Hebert also was perfect on the base paths with 21 stolen bases in 21 attempts.
Metrejean batted .396 this season with 12 doubles, one triple, two home runs and 38 RBIs. She only struck out three times.
Defensively, Metrejean had a .980 fielding percentage.
Other representatives from District 7-4A, which Morgan City competes in, earning honorable mention status, included Kelsie Authement and McKenzi Authement, both of South Terrebonne, and Kassi Leonard, Emily John, Sara Gros and Emily Blanchard, all of Assumption.
Class 4A state champion North DeSoto swept the individual honors as Emma Callie Delafield was named Outstanding Player and Lori McFerren, Coach of the Year.
