Local residents to collect supplies for Harvey victims

Organizers to collect non-perishable items from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at Patterson Area Civic Center

Local residents will collect supplies Sunday in Patterson to send to people affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas.

A group of St. Mary Parish residents will collect supplies from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at the Patterson Area Civic Center. Anyone wanting to donate items is asked to bring non-perishable goods, diapers, baby wipes and clothes along with boxes in which to pack the items.

If you're interested in helping to load an 18-wheeler with supplies collected, contact Allise Jennings at 985-714-1070.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of central
Louisiana, south central Louisiana, southwest Louisiana, west
central Louisiana, and southeast Texas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Tropical Storm Harvey has moved onshore and will continue to move
to the north northeast today and tomorrow. Heavy rainfall is
expected to continue across southeast Texas and will further
exacerbate flooding ongoing across the region. As Harvey
progresses northeastward, the flooding threat could shift into
western Louisiana. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for the
entire area.

Gusty winds are expected today as Harvey continues to move inland. A
Tropical Storm Warning continues for areas along and south of I-10
today. A Wind Advisory is in effect for areas along and north of
I-10.

There is a Marginal Risk for tornadoes today in the rainbands
rotating around the center of Harvey.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for the entire region on Thursday
with the possibility of additional showers which could lead to
additional flooding.

Chances for rain will decrease on Friday and Saturday as drier
air filters into the area. However, moderate to major flooding is
expected to continue along area rivers.

Chances of showers and thunderstorms will increase late this
weekend and early next week as a week as the next weather system
approaches the region.

St. Mary Parish schools will resume on Thursday

St. Mary Parish School Board Superintendent Leonard Armato said that all public schools and school board office will reopen Thursday. School officials said Central Catholic High School and Holy Cross Elementary will reopen Thursday. St. Martin Parish School Board announced on it website that all schools and offices will reopen Thursday. St. Mary Parish Head Start classes will resume Friday.

Sheriff: Woman consumed drugs while fleeing from detectives

A 21-year-old Morgan City woman was caught Tuesday after she ran from narcotics detectives in Berwick and consumed drugs while running, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.

—Sydnie Wainwright, 21, of Third Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 4:51 p.m. Tuesday on charges of possession of methamphetamine, violation of uniform control dangerous subject law; drug-free zone-church, resisting an officer, obstruction of justice and on a Morgan City Police Department warrant charging her with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, stop sign violation and resisting arrest and a warrant for failure to appear for the charge of possession of marijuana.

While investigating a report of illegal activity on Tournament Boulevard in Berwick, narcotics detectives observed who they knew to be Wainwright run from within a crowd, Hebert said.

After a short foot chase, detectives apprehended Wainwright. While speaking with her, Wainwright told detectives she ran because she held active warrants.

Wainwright also told detectives that while running, she consumed narcotics and discarded a bag of methamphetamine on the ground, Hebert said. The incident occurred in an area less than 2,000 feet away from a church. Wainwright was jailed with no bail set.

The Morgan City police warrant stems from an Aug. 3 investigation when patrol officers observed a vehicle disregard a stop sign in the area of Fifth Street.

The officer initiated a stop and the driver of the vehicle fled the area on foot, Blair said. During the investigation, that woman was identified as Wainwright.

Officers located suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia that was linked to Wainwright, Blair said. There were also juveniles located in the vehicle. Warrants were prepared for Wainwright’s arrest, Blair said.

Hebert reported responding to 43 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrest in east St. Mary Parish:

—Lorenzo Merritt, 29, of Hurst Street in Patterson, was arrested at 4:42 p.m. Tuesday on charges of improper display of license plate and possession of marijuana.

Narcotics detectives patrolling Bayou Vista observed a vehicle traveling on Clarke Road without a license plate. A traffic stop was conducted and contact was made with the driver, Merritt.

Detectives received consent to search Merritt and the vehicle and located marijuana cigarettes in the center console, Hebert said. Merritt was released on a summons to appear in court Oct. 23.

Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported responding to 35 calls and reported the following arrests:

—Cade Ordoyne, 18, of Brier Street in Schriever, was arrested at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday on two warrants charging him with failure to appear for arraignment.

Ordoyne was located and arrested at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center on Morgan City Court warrants. Ordoyne was jailed.

—Lynette A. Guidry, 34, of Wytchwood Drive in Morgan City, was arrested at 11:17 a.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging her with theft of a motor vehicle.

Guidry was located and arrested at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on a Morgan City police warrant. The warrant stems from an Aug. 3 investigation where Guidry took the vehicle belonging to the victim. A warrant was prepared for Guidry’s arrest. Guidry was jailed.

—Rickie J. Hayes, 53, of Railroad Avenue in Morgan City, was arrested at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging him with contempt of court. Hayes was located and arrested at city court on a warrant. Hayes was jailed.

—Dequante Wesley, 23, of Orange Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging him with failure to appear for arraignment.

Wesley was located and arrested at the city court on a warrant. Wesley was jailed.

—Ciara V. Williams, 29, of Tom Park Drive in Houston, was arrested at 5:50 p.m. Tuesday on a charge of theft less than $1,000 and a 16th Judicial District Court warrant charging her with failure to appear for trial.

Patrol officers responded to a business in the area of La. 182 in regard to a theft. Williams was identified as taking merchandise valued at $22 without paying for it, Blair said.

Evidence was found linking Williams to the crime, Blair said. Williams also had a warrant for her arrest and was jailed.

—Austin M. Forsythe, 22, of Barber Drive in Laplace, was arrested at 11:36 p.m. Tuesday on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and open container in a motor vehicle.

Patrol officers observed a vehicle traveling in the area of La. 182 with its bright lights activated. A stop was initiated, and Forsythe was identified as the operator of the vehicle, Blair said. Forsythe was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia and an open alcoholic beverage in the motor vehicle, Blair said. Forsythe was jailed.

—Shila Mouton, 48, of Oak Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 5:43 a.m. Wednesday on a charge of domestic abuse battery.

Patrol officers responded to a home in the area of Oak Street in regard to a domestic disturbance. Officers arrived and Mouton was identified as the suspect in the investigation, Blair said.

Mouton was alleged to have struck the victim during the disturbance, Blair said. Police evidence that a battery was committed, Blair said. Mouton was jailed.

Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrests:

—Terry Anslum, 45, of Pecan Grove in Berwick, was arrested at 4:19 p.m. Monday on a charge of domestic abuse battery. Anslum posted $2,500 bail.

—Tara Garcia, 48, of River Road in Berwick, was arrested at 7:05 p.m. Monday on a charge of domestic abuse battery. Garcia posted $2,500 bail.

Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.

ABBA Fab opens 2017-18 Community Concert Association series

ABBA Fab will bring back some of the greatest hits from the 1970s and 1980s in their multimedia to open the Morgan City Community Concert Association’s 2017-18 season.

The concert will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 18 at Municipal Auditorium. Single event tickets are $25 for adults and $5 for K-12 students. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Call 985-385-2307 for more information.

According to promotional material, ABBA Fab is a tribute to the music of ABBA, featuring vocalists Anne and Nick Davies, Chelsea Faulds, Scotty Pearson and other musicians.

This multimedia production includes hits such as “Waterloo,” “Fernando,” “Honey Honey” and “Dancing Queen.”

The association has announced a partnership with the St. Mary Council on Aging, which is offering free transportation to and from concerts for senior citizens (60 and over) who live in St. Mary Parish. Please call at least 24 hours prior to concert to arrange.

DERRICK MICHAEL JENNINGS

Derrik Michael Jennings, 61, a resident of Patterson, was called to his heavenly home on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017.

Derrik was born Dec. 10, 1955, in Morgan City, the son of Emory Cole Jennings and Amy Patricia Rogers Jennings.

For the past 13 years Derrik has been the Park Director for Kemper-Williams Park. He was an original board member of the Patterson Cypress Sawmill Festival and served on the board for 19 years. In 2001 Derrik was named King of the Cypress Sawmill Festival and he reigned with Queen Miss Jami Smith. Of his many years with the Cypress Sawmill Festival, Derrik was the recipient of the Festival Volunteer of the Year, which was awarded by the Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals. For many years Derrik was a member of the Patterson Volunteer Fire Department and was awarded the Volunteer Fireman of the Year Award one year. In his younger years, he helped coach Dixie Youth Baseball. For the last several years, Derrik has been a member of the Crossing Place Church in Bayou Vista.

He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 15 years, Linda Ann LeBlanc Jennings of Patterson; three children, Ryan Jennings and wife Traci of Patterson,
Taylor Jennings and wife Lou of Patterson, and Ashley J. Businelle and husband Paul of Bayou Vista; three step-daughters, Kitty L. Hebert and husband Joseph of Morgan City, Belinda L. Arnold and husband Gregory of Huntsville, Alabama, and Gina L. Arnold and husband Jason of Berwick; seven grandchildren, Parker Jennings, Caleb Jennings, Peyton Jennings, Eli Businelle, Kate Jennings, Andre Businelle and Stella Businelle; and six step grandchildren, Tyler Hebert, Jaci Arnold, Kennedy Hebert, Ryleigh Arnold, Luke Arnold and Lexi Arnold. Derrik is also survived by one sister, Patricia Williams and husband Cary of Ponchatoula; one brother-in-law, Glenn LeBlanc and wife Janice of Millbrook, Alabama; two sisters-in-law, Cheryl Heckman and husband John of Lakeland, Florida and Alyson LeBlanc of Scott; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Derrik was preceded in death by his parents, Emory and Amy Rogers Jennings; one sister, Jan Jennings; one aunt, Ruby Mary Comeaux; and one uncle, Lloyd A. “Pete” Rogers.

A celebration of Derrik’s life will be held from 11 a.m. until time of the service at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, at the Crossing Place Church with Pastor Den Hussey officiating. Following the services, Derrik will be laid to rest in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Patterson.

BARBARA CHARLOT

Barbara Charlot, 63, a native and resident of Patterson, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017, at Chateau Terrebonne Health Care in Houma.

Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until services at 1 p.m. at Good Hope Baptist Church in Patterson. Burial will follow in Home Industrial Cemetery in Patterson.

She is survived by a companion; a son, Claude Charlot of Franklin; three brothers, Calvin Brown of Bayou Vista, Charles Variet of Patterson and Arthur Variet of Lafayette; seven sisters, Ella Bennette, Brenda Roberson, Ivy Maze, Julia Variet and Rita Variet, all of Patterson, Edna Jones of Morgan City and Rose Variet of Lafayette; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.

Otis Mortuary of Franklin is in charge of arrangements.

The guest speaker was Assistant District Attorney Anthony Saleme from the 16th Judicial District. The Kiwanis gave thanks for the hard work and selfless dedication in safeguarding our communities.

Bayou Teche Patriots scrimmage with New Iberia at Superdome

After arriving at the Mercedes-Benz Superdown at 1 p.m., the Bayou Teche Patroits scrimmaged the New Iberia Broncos on Saturday at halftime of the New Orleans Saints-Houston Texans preseason game in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in front of 70,000 fans as part of the NFL 360 program.
The Bayou Teche Patroits topped the New Iberia Broncos 6-0 in Saturday’s scrimmage at halftime at the Superdome. Both teams were allowed to run 8 plays on offense and 8 plays on defense.
In that contest, Bayou Teche Patriots’ Gerald Druilhet led his team in rushing and receiving.
Brar Hines scored the only touchdown for Bayou Teche. Strong safety Trey Do and defensive end Richard Tabor led the defensive effort for the Patriots.
J’Kylon Ceasar tossed a 20-yard TD strike to Jayshaun Johnson. while Courtlon Blake, Aaron Ford, Trey Do all had tackles.
