Thursday morning crash on U.S. 90

Patterson police responded to a two-vehicle crash at 7:06 a.m. Thursday on U.S. 90 east near Tiffany Street. Police said the crash occurred after the driver of a Silverado pickup truck lost control after allegedly having mechanical issues with the truck and struck the rear of a Jeep. The truck went into a ditch and the Jeep spun around and went into the shoulder of the road. Both drivers sustained moderate injuries to the head, police said. The driver of the truck, John Karl Bergeron, 36, of Maurice, was cited for failure to maintain control with an accident, police said.

ROBERT EDWARD 'BOB' DAVIS

Robert Edward “Bob” Davis, a native of Olla and a resident of Patterson, passed away peacefully at 12:56 p.m. on March 7, 2018, at the age of 61, surrounded by his loving family.
Robert is survived by Lynette Roy Davis, his loving wife of 39 years; his son, Jonathan Roy Davis and his wife, Elisa; his three adored grandchildren, Ian Robert, Clare Olivia and Cate Francis Davis; his brother-in-law, Joseph Leonard “Lenny” Roy Jr.; and his sisters-in-law, Katherine Roy and Kathy Abshire.
Robert was preceded in death by his brothers, John “Charlie” Davis and James “Jimmy” Davis; his parents, Johnny and Vida Lougene Davis; his mother and father-in-law, Marilyn LeBoeuf Roy and Joseph Leonard “Puddin” Roy; his brother-in-law, Lionel James Roy; his niece, Erin Davis; and nephew, Erik Davis.
Pallbearers will be David Mitchell, Drew Andrews, Donald Knight, Lou Dugas, Mark Riche and Barry Dufrene. Honorary pallbearer will be Kurt Ronsonet.
The family requests that a time of visitation be observed from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 12 p.m. on March 9, 2018, at Hargrave Funeral Home. Robert will be laid to rest in the Morgan City Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the ER staff and the 6th floor staff at Teche Regional Medical Center for their compassionate care of Robert in his final days. The family would also like to thank Drs. F. A. “Chuck” Metz III, Paul Monier and Brian Parker and their respective nurses and staff for their support throughout Robert’s illness.

Lane closures Tuesday on U.S. 90 over Wax Lake Outlet

U.S. 90 over Wax Lake Outlet will have alternating lane closures in the eastbound and westbound directions on Tuesday for a routine bridge inspection, a Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development news release said.

This closure is estimated to take place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., weather permitting.

Inaction of special session frustrates area lawmakers

Local legislators say they are both frustrated and concerned after the most recent special session aimed at fixing the state's projected budget shortfall ended with nothing accomplished. Gov. John Bel Edwards called the special session for the Legislature to try to solve the roughly $1 billion fiscal cliff that will occur when temporary taxes, including a 1-cent sales tax passed in 2016, expire June 30. The state’s 2018-19 fiscal year begins July 1. The regular session will begin March 12, but legislators can’t tackle any tax proposals during this year’s regular session. (Updated) Police: Two charged with attempted murder after man injured in shooting

Shooting occurred Thursday morning on Railroad Avenue in Morgan City

Two suspects have been charged with attempted first-degree murder following a Thursday morning shooting on Railroad Avenue in Morgan City that left one victim with non-life threatening injuries, according to a Morgan City police news release.

—Blake J. Smith, 28, of Tiffany Street in Patterson, was arrested at 1:26 a.m. Friday on charges of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated criminal damage to property and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

—Kimberly M. Jones, 28, of James Street in Siracusaville, was arrested at 12:18 a.m. Friday on charges of attempted first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated criminal damage to property.

At 4:12 a.m. Thursday, Morgan City police began an investigation in regard to shots being fired in the area of Railroad Avenue. A male victim was found to have suffered non-life threatening injuries and is receiving medical treatment, the release said. The victim wasn't identified in the news release.

During the investigation, Smith and Jones were identified as suspects. Smith allegedly began shooting at the victim as Jones drove the vehicle, police said. Homes and businesses in the area were struck by gun fire during the incident, police said.

Smith was also found to be a convicted felon which prohibited him from possessing a firearm. The investigation continued and warrants were prepared for Smith’s and Jones’ arrests. Jones was located and arrested at the Morgan City Police Department on warrants. Smith was located and arrested at an address in Patterson. Patterson Police Department and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office assisted in the apprehension. Jones and Smith were booked into Morgan City jail. The investigation is still ongoing.

Grizzaffi no-hits Ellender in 14-0 CCHS win

A dominant pitching performance by Bryce Grizzaffi and a potent offense lifted the Central Catholic Eagles to a 14-0 victory against Ellender in five innings in Amelia Tuesday.
Grizzaffi tossed a no hitter and fanned 11. In five innings, he surrendered just one walk.
O f f e n s i v e l y, the Eagles pounded out 10 hits, while Ellender pitching walked six batters, and the Patriots’ defense committed four errors.
Central Catholic, which led just 1-0 after an inning, broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the third before adding five in the bottom of the fourth.
Grizzaffi led the Eagles’ offense with a 1-for-2 performance with a triple, three RBIs and a two runs. Other top Central Catholic offensive performers were Tyler Longman, 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs; Brooks Thomas, 2-for-3, two RBIs and a run; Ryan Miller, 2-for-3, two runs; Sammy Spitale, 1-for-2, two RBIs; Thomas Mire, 1-for-3, an RBI and a run; Luke Barbier, two RBIs and two runs; and Hunter Daigle, an RBI and a run.
Central Catholic (4-4) will return to action Thursday in its tournament when it meets Patterson in a 7:45 p.m. contest.
Berwick falls in
extra innings
The Berwick Panthers fell to Central Lafourche on the road Tuesday 2-1 in eight innings.
No individual stats were available for Berwick, whose six-game winning streak came to an end.
Berwick (6-2) will return to action Thursday when it meets H.L. Bourgeois at 5:40 p.m. in first-day action at Central Catholic’s tournament.
Patterson wins on walk-off
Brandt Lightsey’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Patterson to a 5-4 victory against Albany at home Monday.
Patterson entered the bottom of the seventh tied at 4 with Albany after the visitors scored two runs in the top of the frame.
Early on, Patterson took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, while Albany eventually responded with two runs in the top of the sixth for a 2-1 advantage.
Patterson countered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-2 lead.
Lightsey led the Patterson offense with a 2-for-4 performance with a double, two RBIs and a run. Other top Patterson offensive contributors
were Reid Perkins, 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI; Hayden Pinho, 2-for-3, an RBI and a run; Randy Paul, 1-for-3, a triple, an RBI and a
run; and Joseph Larson, 1-for-3, with a double.
Larson earned the win. In seven innings, he surrendered four runs (three earned) on 13 hits with three hit batters and five strikeouts.
Patterson (4-4) will return to action Thursday when it begins play in Central Catholic’s tournament with a 7:45 p.m. contest against the host squad.

Morgan City run-rules Plaquemine 10-0 in 5 innings

The Morgan City Lady Tigers run-ruled Plaquemine 10-0 in five innings in Morgan City Tuesday. Morgan City led 2-0 after an inning before adding six runs in the second for an 8-0 advantage. The Lady Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth for the final margin. The game was called after the top of the fifth due to the mercy rule. While Morgan City outhit Plaquemine just 6-4, Plaquemine committed four errors, and its pitchers combined for four walks and four hit batters. CCHS baseball tournament to begin Thursday

Central Catholic High School’s annual baseball tournament will begin Thursday and continue through Saturday. The 11-team tournament will be split between two sites as Morgan City High will host games on all three days in addition to Central Catholic in Amelia. In addition to Central Catholic and Morgan City, other teams participating are H.L. Bourgeois, Assumption, Berwick, Patterson, Central Lafourche, Loreauville, Ascension Catholic, St. John and Houma Christian.
