(Updated) Police: Two charged with attempted murder after man injured in shooting

Shooting occurred Thursday morning on Railroad Avenue in Morgan City

Two suspects have been charged with attempted first-degree murder following a Thursday morning shooting on Railroad Avenue in Morgan City that left one victim with non-life threatening injuries, according to a Morgan City police news release.

—Blake J. Smith, 28, of Tiffany Street in Patterson, was arrested at 1:26 a.m. Friday on charges of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated criminal damage to property and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

—Kimberly M. Jones, 28, of James Street in Siracusaville, was arrested at 12:18 a.m. Friday on charges of attempted first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated criminal damage to property.

At 4:12 a.m. Thursday, Morgan City police began an investigation in regard to shots being fired in the area of Railroad Avenue. A male victim was found to have suffered non-life threatening injuries and is receiving medical treatment, the release said. The victim wasn't identified in the news release.

During the investigation, Smith and Jones were identified as suspects. Smith allegedly began shooting at the victim as Jones drove the vehicle, police said. Homes and businesses in the area were struck by gun fire during the incident, police said.

Smith was also found to be a convicted felon which prohibited him from possessing a firearm. The investigation continued and warrants were prepared for Smith’s and Jones’ arrests. Jones was located and arrested at the Morgan City Police Department on warrants. Smith was located and arrested at an address in Patterson. Patterson Police Department and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office assisted in the apprehension. Jones and Smith were booked into Morgan City jail. The investigation is still ongoing.
