Jim Bradshaw: South La. man was among last to die in World War I

We celebrate Veterans Day on or about Nov. 11, because World War I ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
If it had ended on the 10th day, a young man from south Louisiana would not have died far from home.
Jasper Joseph Neyland, for whom the American Legion post in Washington is named, was one of the last American soldiers killed in that “war to end all wars.”
He died just hours before that fateful deadline.
“St. Landry was among the places of the United States which suffered the loss of one of its noblest fighters in the last hour of battle, the St. Landry Star-Progress reported. “Captain Jasper J. Neyland, 27 years old, of Washington, fell on the field of honor … on Nov. 10th, virtually the last hour of the war that for four long years shook the very foundation of true democracy.”
Jasper was “a splendid young man with a glorious future ahead of him, and a boy who would have held the admiration and esteem of his people here, for he had made good in the army in the truest sense of the word,” according to the newspaper account of his death.
He was a graduate of Washington High School and LSU, and before the war was “a very valuable and trusted employee” of the Union Sulphur Company in Calcasieu Parish.
“For several years he was principal of the Sulphur High School,” according to the Star-Progress story, “and the sulphur company took such a fancy to the splendid young St. Landrian that they offered him a lucrative position.”
He enlisted in the Army when the U.S. entered the war, was sent for officer’s training in Texas, and was commissioned a second lieutenant at the end of 1917.
“It was not very long before young Neyland was promoted and … doing valuable work as a captain,” the Star-Progress reported.
“It is indeed sad that the young man should have fallen in action just on the eve of the war’s ending, and his relatives and friends were looking forward so fondly to his early home coming,” the St. Landry Clarion said in its account. “His death, however, will be remembered as that of another hero who made the supreme sacrifice in order that democracy and peace might not perish.”
“Captain Neyland died a true American soldier, fighting for a cause he knew was right,” the Star-Progress added. “He was unafraid, determined to do his best, and it is sad indeed that such a noble, exemplary young man should be sacrificed at a moment his efforts could avail nothing, as the fight in which he met his fate was the closing chapter of the bloodiest in the history of the world.”
An impressive marble drinking fountain that now stands in front of the American Legion home first stood on the Washington High School campus.
It was dedicated in Jasper’s memory on March 7, 1920, in what the Clarion described as “one of the most impressive services we have ever witnessed.”
March 7 was an unusually cold day, but “in spite of this,” the Clarion said, the event attracted “an extremely large audience, whose silence throughout the services was indeed a tribute of deepest respect.”
Tears ran freely as Jasper’s boyhood friend Manning Wartelle unveiled the fountain and members of the student body sang “Onward Christian Soldiers.”

Berwick police: 12-year-old brandished BB gun; man, teen accused of interfering with fire response

(Editor’s note: The charges listed here and the narratives that go with them are provided by the police agencies that made the arrests. Guilt or innocence has not been determined in court.)

Berwick police say they arrested a 12-year-old who tried to pass off a BB gun as the real thing during a fight, and an adult and a 17-year-old girl who are accused of causing a disturbance while firefighters were battling a blaze at a Johnson Drive home Sunday, police reports say.

Berwick
Police Chief David Leonard reported these arrests:
—Juvenile, 12, Morgan City, was arrested at 8:05 p.m. Saturday on charges of possession of marijuana (under 14 grams) and illegal carrying of a weapon.
About 7:25 p.m. Saturday, officers working the Berwick Lighthouse Festival were advised of a fight that took place on the fairgrounds. While gathering information regarding the incident, it was learned that a male subject brandished a firearm during the disturbance and fled on foot.
A description of the subject was given to officers. A juvenile matching the description was located a short time later. Officers made contact with the juvenile and located an airsoft pistol concealed in his waistband that was portrayed to be a real firearm.
During this time, the juvenile was also found to be in possession of marijuana. The juvenile was placed under arrest and transported to the Berwick Police Department, where he was booked and released to a parent pending a court hearing.
—Brandon Grant, 39, Johnson Drive, Berwick, was arrested at 3:36 p.m. Sunday on a charge of disturbing the peace (14th offense).
—Juvenile, 17, was arrested at 5:36 p.m. Sunday on charges of disturbing the peace, resisting an officer by force or violence, battery of a police officer, threatening a public official and interfering with a law enforcement investigation.
About 3:31 p.m. Sunday, the Berwick Police Department was dispatched to a residence on Johnson Drive for a structure fire. Officers observed the residence to be fully engulfed in flames.
Officers spoke with the homeowners and asked if anybody was inside the residence. They said no and were upset that the Fire Department had not arrived on scene. The Fire Department arrived on scene within 3 minutes of being dispatched.
During this time, officers advised the residents that they needed to back away from the scene in order for fire personnel to be able to perform their duties. The residents became irate with officers and refused to leave from the area. Officers attempted to speak with Grant, who continuously ignored officers’ commands and began cursing and causing a disturbance.
Grant was then handcuffed and at that time a juvenile girl became even more upset and too started to cause a disturbance. Officers attempted to place the juvenile under arrest, at which time she began resisting arrest and committed a battery on one of the officers.
The juvenile was able to be handcuffed and she began threatening to commit harm to other public officials performing their duties at the scene. The juvenile was transported to the Berwick Police Department, where she was booked.
Following the booking the juvenile was released to a parent pending a court hearing. Grant was released on a summons to appear in court in December.
—Freddie Bonvillain 67, Fern Street, Thibodaux, was arrested at 4:25 p.m. Saturday on a warrant alleging criminal trespassing.
On Saturday, Bonvillain entered the Berwick Police Department to speak with an officer regarding an unrelated complaint. During this time, a warrants check was conducted and it was learned that he had an active warrant through the Berwick Police Department.
Bonvillain was placed under arrest and released on a summons to appear on court in December.
—Dustin Henagin, 38, Bowman Street, Berwick, was arrested 8:29 p.m. Saturday on charges of domestic abuse battery (strangulation), possession of methamphetamine and violation of controlled dangerous substance laws (drug-free zone).
About 8:05 p.m. Saturday, the Berwick Police Department received a call about a battery that occurred at a residence on Bowman Street. Officers arrived at the residence and spoke with the complainant and several witnesses, who advised that Henagin attacked a family member and started choking him.
Officers met with Henagin and placed him under arrest. During a search of his person, Henagin was found to be in possession of methamphetamine. The residence in which the incident occurred is within 2,000 feet of a school, which is a posted drug-free zone.
Henagin was transported to the Berwick Police Department, where he was booked.

UPDATED WITH GAME ACCOUNTS: Patterson, Morgan City, Berwick fall in regular season finales

Staff Report
Injuries and tough competition combined to make east St. Mary prep football teams go 0-4 in the final week of the regular season.
Longtime Central Catholic coach Tommy Minton, now head coach at Vandebilt Catholic, did what he has done so many times: He got a victory at Morgan City’s Tiger Stadium.
Vandebilt took down Morgan City High 38-12 to complete a perfect 5-0 record in District 8-4A.
Patterson, playing without an injured Caylon Davis at quarterback, fell 55-22 at home to Lutcher. Despite the loss, Patterson will host a home playoff game this week against Donaldsonville in Class 3A.
Central Catholic will also be at home in the first round of the playoffs, despite a 32-20 loss Thursday at home against Vermilion Catholic.
Central Catholic will take on Ascension Catholic in a first-round Division IV playoff game.
Berwick dropped its season finale to Donaldsonville, 32-10. Berwick finishes the year at 2-7.
Franklin and West St. Mary both made the 2A playoffs. Franklin beat Catholic-New Iberia 40-13, and West St. Mary dropped a 41-7 decision to Ascension Episcopal.
Highland Baptist edged Centerville 7-0 Thursday and finishes its season at 2-7.
Vermilion Catholic 32,
Central Catholic 20
All-purpose Vermilion Catholic receiver Jonathan Dartez scored three touchdowns, and teammates Seth Noegel and Travin Moore added late scores to lift the visitors to a 32-20 win Thursday over Central Catholic.
The game pitted two teams at the top of District 8-1A, each with 4-0 district records heading in. The loss was the first for Central Catholic in seven games after an 0-2 start.
The touchdowns by Noegel on a 10-yard run and Moore from 2 yards out broke open a game that was tied 20-20 late in the third quarter.
Vermilion Catholic’s methodical but high-powered running game overcame Central Catholic’s injury-plagued offense, which was led by the rushing of quarterback Caleb O’Con and running back Damondrick Blackburn.
Blackburn, fighting his own injury, nevertheless did the heavy lifting and scored on runs of 2 and 10 yards.
Dartez, a wide receiver who occasionally lined up to take direct snaps, had first-half TD runs of 7 and 1 yards, and broke loose for a 62-yard score in the third quarter.
Blackburn’s touchdown runs and a 5-yard plunge by Jonathan Picou helped Central Catholic keep pace until Noegel and Moore put Vermilion Catholic ahead for good.
Central Catholic turned the ball over on downs twice late in the second half.
Tylon Hollins intercepted a Vermilion Catholic Hail Mary pass at the end of the first half.
Central Catholic finishes the regular season at 6-3. Vermilion Catholic is 7-3.

Lutcher 55,
Patterson 22
Receiver Kyler Paul moved behind center to replace the injured Davis, and scored first-half touchdowns on runs of 34 and 5 yards.
The second touchdown capped a drive in which Patterson twice converted fourth downs, one on a 9-yard pass to Dillon Gunner.
But Lutcher had both speed and power in its backfield.
Quarterback D’Wayne’ Winfield rushed for four touchdowns.
Running backs Roy Forrest and Cleveland Parquette each rushed for two scores for Lutcher.
Patterson enters the playoffs with a 6-4 record.
Lutcher is 7-1 and will host Carroll on Friday in the playoffs.

Vandebilt Catholic 38,
Morgan City 12
Vandebilt, already heavy favorites, got two big boosts when Morgan City fumbled deep in its own territory on two early Tiger possessions.
Vandebilt capitalized with a 6-yard TD run by quarterback Teddy Gawlick and a 6-yard run by running back Jaylon Coleman.
Coleman went on to rush for touchdowns of 62 and 8 yards, Alexander Castell caught an 11-yard TD pass, and a 29-yard field goal, all before halftime, to give Vandebilt all the points it would need.
Charlie Wells gave the hometown Senior Night crowd something to cheer about with TD runs of 5 and 81 yards in the fourth quarter.
Morgan City ends the season with a 2-7 record.
Vandebilt is 6-2 and will host St. Louis Catholic in the first round of the Division II playoffs.
