This weekend: An entertaining murder mystery and high school hoops

Due to a last minute cut for space at deadline, the information about the Rumble in the Jungle basketball jamboree was omitted from this story in Friday's print edition, although the headline made reference to the hoops event. The information is included here.

Aquanette Davis, administrative program specialist at the Wedell-Williams Aviation and Cypress Sawmill Museum in Patterson, was looking for something new for the museum and the community.
So Davis conspired to stage a murder.
People can be part of the crime Saturday, which will be Murder Mystery Night at the museum, 118 Cotten Road.
The audience-participation performance will be something new for the museum.
“I want to put my foot in the water and see how the community reacts,” Davis said.
Davis’ co-conspirators are from The Murder Mystery of New Orleans, the masterminds behind the crime.
From the company’s website:
“Spoiler alert: someone’s gonna die. It’ll be up to you and your guests to crack the case and figure out who had the motivation to commit the crime!
“Our mysteries only ever have one correct solution, so put your thinking cap on and collect the clues you need to track down the killer. Our pre-written suspect roles are a fun way to get your group out of their comfort zone.
"A lot of our clients get really into it.”
The event begins at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Tickets are $30 and are available through Eventbrite.

Archbishop Hannan beats Morgan City High in volleyball quarterfinals

LAFAYETTE -- Morgan City High, which rode a sophomore-heavy lineup to a place among the top eight Division III volleyball teams in the state, fell to top-seeded Archbishop Hannan 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-7) in Thursday's quarterfinal matchup at the Cajundome.

Ninth-seeded Morgan City finishes its season with a 20-19 record.

Top-seeded Archbishop Hannan came into the match with a 35-6 record and a lineup that features 6-foot-6 Rylee Morris. She led the team in kills with 12 and blocks with three.

Morris was most effective with dinks. Her teammates brought the power, led by Carleigh Breaux with 10 kills.

Hannan's serves were also a strength. Sofie Bonnafer and Avery Boudreaux each had four aces,

"They had a few more weapons," Morgan City coach Christy Theriot said.

Morgan City had a few weapons of its own. One of the sophomores, Sarah Daniels, led the team with 12 kills and 22 blocks. Madison Gray posted 12 assists. .Brooke LeBoueuf had one ace, five assists and 12 digs;

Morgan City stayed in the first two games until Hannan began to pull away as it neared 20 points. It wasn't until the third game that Morgan City's frustration began to show up its in play.

Still, "I'm proud of them for getting here," Theriot said, "because for a while there it didn't look like we would get here."

After finishing the regular season with a 1-5 district record, Morgan City beat Lusher Charter 3-0 in the playoff opener and then upset No. 8 St. Louis Catholic 3-1 on the road to earn its place in the quarterfinal.

According to Morgan City police, the investigation turned up several videos of surveillance that led to a vehicle description along with potential suspects. There was information from the Berwick Police Department in regards to several burglaries that occurred in their jurisdiction that linked the Morgan City investigations.
Early Tuesday, patrol officers located a vehicle fitting the description. Officers were able to gain access to the vehicle in which suspected marijuana and a firearm that was reported stolen in Pearl River were located, Morgan City police said.

Stolen gun, marijuana charges follow Amelia-area traffic stop

(Editor’s note: The charges listed here and the narratives that go with them are provided by the police agencies that made the arrests. Guilt or innocence has not been determined in court.)

The smell of marijuana led Assumption Parish deputies to a stolen weapon during a Tuesday traffic stop in Amelia, according to arrest reports.
Quintrell Quest Maurice, 45, Lizabeth Drive, Morgan City, was arrested at 10:03 p.m. Tuesday on charges of felon in possession of a firearm, illegal possession of a stolen firearm, obstruction of justice, possession of marijuana, driving on roadway laned for traffic and speeding 85 mph in a 70 mph zone.
The charges resulted from a traffic stop on U.S. 90 near Amelia.
A uniformed patrol deputy observed a westbound vehicle commit a traffic violation and initiated a stop of that vehicle. The deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Maurice, and engaged in an interview.
The deputy noted a strong odor of suspected marijuana emitting from the vehicle. As the interview continued, the deputy proceeded to conduct a walk-around of the vehicle, at which time he observed a large-caliber handgun as well as assorted drug paraphernalia. The deputy took possession of the firearm due to safety considerations.
The deputy continued to interview the suspect and noted him to be eating suspected marijuana.
Dispatch then notified the deputies on scene that Maurice was a prior convicted felon. The suspect was convicted previously of manslaughter.
A K-9 executed an open-air sniff of the vehicle and alerted positive to the presence of controlled dangerous sub-stances.
A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of additional marijuana.
It was also determined that the now seized firearm had been reported stolen in Morgan City.
Maurice was arrested and booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center.
