Patterson man accused of home improvement fraud in Thibodaux

He allegedly 'left trail of incomplete jobs,' according to a Florida TV station

A 46-year-old Patterson man has been charged with home improvement fraud in Lafourche Parish for allegedly not completing repairs on a roof. A Florida TV station reported that the man has a history of leaving jobs incomplete.

Terry LaCoste, 46, of Patterson was arrested on a Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office warrant charging him with home improvement fraud, Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said in a news release.

On June 5, detectives opened an investigation into possible residential contractor fraud at a home on Cedar Tree Drive in Thibodaux. Through investigation, detectives learned a resident had contacted LaCoste of New Image Roofing to have his roof repaired at a cost estimate of $16,800 to be completed in within seven to 14 days, Webre said.

LaCoste began working on the project on March 15 and worked for 35 days, Webre said. According to the resident, the work was uneven and incomplete, and the residence suffered water damage as a result. The resident had also paid several thousand dollars over the contract price for additional labor and materials to complete the job.

Further investigation revealed LaCoste did not have a state-issued residential contractor’s license, nor had any parish permit been obtained to perform work at the site, Webre said. Detectives then obtained a warrant for his arrest.

According to NBC2 News in southwest Florida, LaCoste “left a trail of incomplete jobs across two states."

LaCoste's license was suspended by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, which prohibits him from working as a contractor in Florida, NBC2 reported.

The TV station also reported that LaCoste moved to Louisiana and started a roofing business there. NBC2 stated in the article that the station first reported on LaCoste's alleged problems in 2016 when a homeowner near Tampa said LaCoste took a $900 deposit to repair a leaky roof but never did the work.

The Daily Review called a phone number Monday listed online for New Image Roofing Inc. in Berwick and left a message, but hadn't received a call back yet.

LaCoste was arrested in St. Mary Parish on Sunday and transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on Monday where he was booked with one count of home improvement fraud. His bail is set at $5,000.

Webre cautions residents to always properly research any contractor before hiring anyone for any job. Be sure the contractor has proper licensing, and always double-check with the State of Louisiana if there is any doubt, Webre said.

Exhibit marks 20 years since Diana’s death

LONDON (AP) — London’s Buckingham Palace has unveiled an intimate tribute to Diana, the Princess of Wales, marking the 20th anniversary of her death.
In one of the palace’s state rooms, curators have carefully recreated a desk the princess worked at in her sitting room at Kensington Palace, complete with family photos, cherished items and music cassettes. She wrote letters here, read briefings and took care of other correspondence.
Many of the items shown on and around the desk were selected by her sons, William, the Duke of Cambridge, and Prince Harry.
“It was chosen to reflect an aspect of Diana, Princess of Wales’ official duties. So the work that she would undertake at her desk before and after engagements,” said curator Sally Goodsir. “So, we’ve really tried to recreate her desk as it was in her sitting room at Kensington Palace. And using objects that she had upon her desk and from memories that her sons, the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry have of her.”
The desk features a leather frame which contains photographs of family and friends. There’s also a case of cassette tapes and a radio reflecting her love of music, along with her ballet shoes, which hung on the door of her sitting room at Kensington Palace.
“Some of the pieces on display really reflect the princess’ personal interests,” said Goodsir. “These include her ballet shoes, she was well-known as a lover of dance, and then also her set of cassette tapes, popular music such as Elton John and George Michael, but also pieces from classical repertoire, including Pavarotti.”
Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997.
“It will be an important anniversary at the end of August, marking the 20th anniversary of her death,” said Goodsir.
The tribute to Diana is part of Buckingham Palace’s annual summer opening, which also includes the exhibit “Royal Gifts,” a special display of more than 200 gifts presented to Queen Elizabeth II during her 65-year reign.
The gifts include a British Academy of Film and Television Arts award presented to the queen in 2013 for her patronage of the film and television industries. Some items were presented to the queen during state visits and overseas tours, such as a model of a warrior presented in 1974 from Papua New Guinea, and a portrait of the queen made with woven banana leaves, given to her in Rwanda in 2006.
“I’ve tried to display objects from as many countries as possible and really showcase national craftsmanship,” explained Goodsir.
Other items reflect the queen’s interests, such as a bronze model of a riding horse she once owned and a porcelain model of her as a young princess on horseback.
The palace’s 25th annual summer opening runs from now to Oct. 1.
Also on display are a bag of salt presented to her in the British Virgin Islands and a flag worn by an astronaut during a spacewalk outside the International Space Station in 2016.

Princes remember their final call with Diana

LONDON (AP) — It was a typical phone call between two boys and their mother, who was on vacation in France. It was brief — the boys wanted to get back to playing with their cousins, not spend time on the phone chatting.
The brevity of that 1997 call haunts Prince William and Prince Harry to this day — for their mother, Princess Diana, would die in a car crash that night.
“Harry and I were in a desperate rush to say goodbye, you know ‘see you later’... If I’d known now obviously what was going to happen I wouldn’t have been so blase about it and everything else,” William says in a new documentary. “But that phone call sticks in my mind, quite heavily.”
Harry tells the filmmakers the final chat is something he will regret until the end of his days.
“Looking back on it now, it’s incredibly hard. I’ll have to sort of deal with that for the rest of my life,” Harry said. “Not knowing that was the last time I was going to speak to my mum. How differently that conversation would have panned out if I’d had even the slightest inkling her life was going to be taken that night.”
The ITV documentary “Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy” is airing Monday on British TV. Excerpts from the film, and new family photographs, were released Sunday.
The show is one of a series of tributes to Diana expected as the 20th anniversary of her death on Aug. 31, 1997, approaches.
It is only in the last year that William and Harry have spoken openly in public about their feelings about the sudden loss of their mother. William — second-in-line for the British throne after his father Prince Charles — was only 15 at the time. Harry was only 12.
The documentary chronicles Diana’s charitable works, including her historic outreach to AIDS victims and her campaign to ban land mines.
William and Harry also stress their mother’s fun-loving side, which they say the public generally didn’t see.
“Our mother was a total kid through and through. When everybody says to me ‘so she was fun, give us an example,’ all I can hear is her laugh in my head,” said Harry.
William tells a story that reveals the privileged life they led as children. One day, Diana surprised him by having three of the world’s top models waiting for him when he got home from school.
“She organized when I came home from school to have Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell waiting at the top of the stairs. I was probably a 12- or 13-year-old boy who had posters of them on his wall,” William said. “I went bright red and didn’t know quite what to say. And sort of fumbled and I think pretty much fell down the stairs on the way up.”
William says he frequently tells his children — Prince George, 4, and Princess Charlotte, 2 — about Diana so she can be a presence in her grandchildren’s lives.
“She’d be a lovely grandmother. She’d absolutely love it, she’d love the children to bits,” he said.

Son’s drug habit causes marriage crisis for mom

DEAR ABBY: I have been married to a loving and supportive man for 15 years. We have been through a lot together and, for the most part, have been OK. My problem is my son, “Kyle.” Yes, I know Kyle is a liar who steals anything not nailed down. And yes, he needs help for his drug habit — but he is still my son. My husband told me I either tell Kyle he is not welcome in our home or our marriage is over, so I gave him back my wedding ring. I refuse to tell my son he can’t come ...

Teche handicap-accessible docks dedicated

ST. MARTINVILLE (AP) — The national water trail along Bayou Teche has four new handicap-accessible floating docks for canoers and kayakers, and two of them will be dedicated in the coming week. There’s one in each parish through which the 135-mile-long bayou flows.

Those at St. Martinville, Charenton and Loreauville have a boat slip at one end with two overhead handrails so paddlers on the Bayou Teche Paddle Trail can pull themselves straight up from their boats, rather than leaning over to haul themselves out over one side.

The other end is angled so debris and floating plants drift down the bayou with the current rather than piling up against the dock.

The Port Barre dock is larger than the other three because it’s the starting point for the annual Tour du Teche paddle race.

It doesn’t have a boat slip but does have a gangway handrail, transition plates and some other features to for safer and easier wheelchair access, said Jennifer Ritter Guidry of the University of Louisiana.

The dock at St. Martinville will be dedicated at 2 p.m. Monday, and the one at Port Barre (“Barry”) at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

A ribbon-cutting was held last month at Loreauville. A date has not yet been set at Charenton, but Guidry said it will be sometime in August, after some trail improvements are completed..

Guidry says the Federal Highway Administration provided $83,400 for the docks through its Recreational Trails Program.

She’s with the university’s Center for Louisiana Studies, which partnered with the Teche Ecology, Culture and History Education Project, or TECHE Project, and another nonprofit, the Acadiana Resource Conservation and Development Council, to create the Bayou Teche Paddle Trail.

The center also administered this grant.

A fifth floating dock, at Breaux Bridge, has the same boat slip design as those at St. Martinville, Charenton and Loreauville. The TECHE Project got a separate grant to build it.
