Arbor Day at Burden returns Jan. 21

BATON ROUGE — The LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden’s annual Arbor Day celebration is back and better than ever.
This year’s event, slated Jan. 21, will feature a wide range of activities to help people of all ages learn about the importance of trees while enjoying time in the great outdoors.
The fun will start at 9 a.m. and wrap up at 1 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
New for 2023 is a partnership with Baton Rouge Green, which will host a tree giveaway, and ax throwing with the Timber Tigers, a forestry club for LSU students. Old favorites such as tree climbing with Bofinger’s Tree Service and a visit from Smokey Bear will return.
As with previous Arbor Day celebrations, attendees will be able to plant a tree in the Burden Woods and receive GPS coordinates so they can track its growth. These trees will help reforest areas of the woods that suffered damage during previous hurricane seasons.
Arbor Day is officially celebrated in Louisiana on the third Friday of each January — a time of year that is ideal for planting trees here.
The Botanic Gardens at Burden is part of the Burden Museum & Gardens complex at 4560 Essen Lane in Baton Rouge.

How to pick the right trees for your property

Trees benefit a landscape by serving both aesthetic and utilitarian functions. A home surrounded by healthy green trees can be a sight to behold, and those same trees can benefit surrounding plants and wildlife at the same time.
As appealing as trees are, not all trees and landscapes make for the perfect match. The Arbor Day Foundation notes the importance of planning when designing a landscape.
Planning ensures the trees homeowners ultimately choose for their properties will grow well in the soil and moisture present in their yards.
Careful consideration of a handful of variables can help homeowners determine which trees will make the best fit for their properties.
—Height: Homeowners must consider the projected height of a tree before planting it.
Avoid trees that will bump into anything when fully grown, as that can adversely affect surrounding greenery and pose a safety hazard.
The Arbor Day Foundation’s tree sizing guide can be accessed at www.arborday.org/trees/rightTreeAnd Place/size.cfm and serves as an invaluable resource for homeowners who want to plant new trees around their properties.
—Canopy spread: Trees grow out as well as up, so it’s important to consider their potential width at maturity as well.
The Arbor Day Foundation sizing guide can help homeowners get an idea of how wide a tree is likely to be at maturity.
Trees that spread out quite a bit don’t necessarily need to be avoided, but it’s important that they’re planted far enough apart so they don’t adversely affect surrounding plants.
In addition, wide trees that are planted too close together can make the landscape appear crowded, taking something away from its aesthetic appeal.
—Growth rate: Growth rate is an important variable because it can affect how quickly homeowners will see changes in their landscapes.
Homeowners who want to plant for privacy can consider trees with quick growth rates or purchase more mature trees that are already near full growth. Those who are not in need of instant transformation can try trees with slower growth rates, which the Arbor Day Foundation notes typically live longer than fast-growing species.
—Requirements: Different trees require different amounts of sun and moisture and different soil components to thrive.
Homeowners can have their soil tested to determine which trees will thrive in it. Local garden centers can be a great resource for homeowners who want insight as to which trees will thrive in their local climates.
Trees serve many functions on a property. Choosing the right trees for a landscape requires careful consideration of a host of variables.

Marriage teeters months after vows are exchanged

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been married 11 months. We’ve been together five years and have lived together for the last three. This is my second marriage and his third. I have put up with a lot from him and overlooked way too much. He isn’t affectionate, doesn’t kiss me hello or goodbye unless I ask, and doesn’t hug me.
He doesn’t seem to like sex either, although if I say it, he gets mad at me and says he does. We might have sex twice a month. I would like it more often than that, but I have tolerated his almost nonexistent sex drive. He never initiates. He is very moody and pouts and complains about things not going his way with his job, his life, his 16-year-old daughter (who doesn’t like to be with him), etc. Yet he doesn’t make positive changes.
Since the wedding, he has stopped sleeping with me in the same bed. He claims I snore and it wakes him up. I don’t like the TV on when I’m falling asleep, and he demands to have it on. He won’t go with me to visit my family but demands that I go with him on weekends and sometimes during the week to have dinner at his parents’.
I moved an hour and a half away from my children and grandchildren to be with him. When I mention that I would like to have the kids spend the night, he comes up with a million excuses why that isn’t a good idea, but when his daughter wants to spend the night, it’s perfectly fine.
OMG, as I write this, I’m wondering WHY am I with him? I feel like crying. I do love him, and when I think about not being with him, it feels like my heart is falling out of my chest.
What should I do?
HEARTBROKEN & STUCK IN THE EAST

DEAR HEARTBROKEN: I know what I would do if I were in your situation, but I’m not you.
You stated that you gained insight from writing this letter. You appear to be an intelligent person. I suggest you reread your letter several more times, because after you do, I am confident you will know what you need to do. It is possible to love someone and not be compatible.

DEAR ABBY: I am in my 40s and have been divorced for seven years after an awful marriage. I have two daughters who would love for me to meet someone and have the loving relationship I deserve.
The problem is, I fell in love with someone after my divorce, and he decided to marry someone else. I have no way of knowing if he is still married. We are not allowed to have contact because of his new wife’s jealousy.
My heart is broken. I don’t know how to move on from someone I truly felt was my soul mate.
How do you tell your heart to move on? It feels impossible. No one compares to him, so I feel like my only option is to settle for less than the best or stay single.
DOWNHEARTED IN OHIO

DEAR DOWNHEARTED: Either of those options MIGHT work for you. But a better one would be to realize that while this man may have been YOUR soul mate, you were not HIS. Then make a rational decision to move forward with your life.
You are in your 40s, and it isn’t too late to meet someone with whom you can have a happy life.
