The Coast Guard medevaced a crewmember from a motor vessel Tuesday approximately 13 miles south of Port Fourchon, the Coast Guard said Wednesday.

Coast Guard Eighth District and Coast Guard Sector New Orleans command center watch-standers received a report at approximately noon Tuesday from the motor vessel Solitaire of a 65-year-old male crewmember experiencing heart attack-like symptoms. Sector New Orleans watch-standers diverted a Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew to assist.

The aircrew arrived on scene, hoisted the crewmember, and transported him to University Medical Center in New Orleans.

The crewmember was last reported in stable condition.

Avant-garde: Alligator hides included in research project

BATON ROUGE — Susan Lindrew, a senior majoring in textiles, apparel and merchandising, has been working on a research project on experimental patternmaking to use the typically discarded portions of alligator hides in fashion.
LSU Department of Textiles, Apparel Design and Merchandising faculty member Casey Stannard is her advisor for the project. Their research explores experimental pattern making techniques that could help reduce waste and give a purpose to the underutilized leather that would typically end up on the cutting room floor.
“Fashion as an industry has a huge impact on the environment. It is important to find ways to reduce waste and to utilize materials in an ethical and sustainable manner,” Stannard said. “This research project is just one step in that direction, and I’m excited to see what else we can achieve in the future.”
Traditional fashion and patternmaking approaches often start with flat fabric and patterns, which work well except for three-dimensional textiles like alligator hides. The flat belly section of the hide is the most prized section used by designers, while rounded parts, like the legs, are often discarded.
“I was aware of zero waste but had never had the time or an opportunity to try it,” Lindrew said. “Participating in the research project gave me an opportunity to experience and try these things, and it was very rewarding.”
The team explored three experimental patternmaking techniques to achieve avant-garde, or new and experimental ideas, for the use of the hides. Lindrew demonstrated how a three-dimensional piece of hide could be used to create a ruffle on a sleeve.
Lindrew shared her own thoughts on the project’s potential impact.
“I think this research could have a significant impact on the fashion industry,” Lindrew said. “It could potentially reduce waste and change the way we think about patternmaking and design. It’s exciting to be a part of something that could make a difference.”
The research project’s success demonstrates the potential for sustainable fashion practices to make a difference. Lindrew and Stannard have taken an important step towards reducing waste and changing the way designers think about patternmaking.
The LSU College of Agriculture undergraduate research grant program funded Lindrew’s research project. Through hands-on involvement with undergraduate research, Lindrew has learned design techniques that she never knew existed.
The project’s success was demonstrated by its reception at the LSU Undergraduate Research Conference, where Lindrew and Stannard presented their research. The project poster won the “Best in Show” award for the textiles, apparel and merchandising division.
Later this summer, the three designs also will be submitted to an international juried design exhibit.

Reader gives meatloaf recipe a western twist

DEAR ABBY: I have seen you mention in your column your cookbooklets of favorite recipes. I hope the meatloaf recipe is included. Years ago, I cut out your meatloaf recipe, and it’s been a staple at my house ever since.
I did make one significant change: I use ground bison instead of beef. It’s healthier and tastes great.
Thanks, Abby, for your years of entertaining, wise words.
NANCY M. IN OREGON

DEAR NANCY: I’m pleased you have enjoyed preparing (and eating!) that meatloaf, and I was intrigued that you substituted bison for the beef. I’m pleased to share the recipe again, and yes, it’s included in my cookbooklet set. I have made it for years. It makes delicious sandwiches the second day if there’s any left over.
The cookbooklet set features recipes for appetizers, soups, salads, vegetable and side dishes, main courses and delicious desserts (which are my downfall).
The set, which also includes tips on entertaining, can be ordered by sending your name and address, plus check or money order for $16 to: Dear Abby Cookbooklet Set, P.O. Box 447, Mt. Morris, IL 61054-0447.

Meatloaf
2 lbs. ground beef
1 cup seasoned Italian bread crumbs
½ cup finely chopped onion
1/3 cup ketchup
1/3 cup water
1 tsp. garlic powder
2 eggs
Pepper to taste
Salt, if desired
4 strips uncooked bacon, if desired
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In large bowl, combine all ingredients except bacon. Shape into a loaf; place in 9-by-5-inch pan.
Arrange bacon strips on top of meat mixture, if desired. Bake for 60 minutes.
Serves 6 to 8

By the way, the cookbooklet set also contains a tasty recipe for TURKEY meatloaf for those who have sworn off red meat, which clearly I haven’t.

DEAR ABBY: I started having sex with a married co-worker. He cheated on me with other women.
When I found out, I told him to tell me he was sorry because I didn’t deserve it. He could have just left me alone. He won’t apologize.
What do I do? I’m really upset about it. He’s married, living a single life.
NOT THE ONLY ONE IN GEORGIA

DEAR NOT THE ONLY ONE: You knew this co-worker was married, and yet you helped him cheat. Why are you surprised that you are not the only other woman in his life?
You are hardly the wronged woman; his wife is. If you want to improve your life, move on and find someone you can have an open and aboveboard relationship with.

La. 182 bridge will close May 23 for rehab project

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development says the $25.9 million rehabilitation project for the La. 182 bridge begins Monday.

Work will consist of cleaning, painting, bridge repair and related work. The project will begin at the Berwick side and end at the Morgan City side of the bridge.

The bridge will be closed to traffic beginning May 23. The detour route will consist of U.S. 90.

Emergency vehicles will not have access to the area.

This project is estimated for completion in May 2025, a shorter timeline than the DOTD predicted last year, when the work was expected to take up to 3-1/2 years.

DOTD says it appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through the construction site and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment.

DOTD has the following resources in place to assist motorists.

School Board passes out end-of-year honors

CENTERVILLE — In its last meeting before the school year ends, the St. Mary Parish School Board passed out honors to scholars, readers and artists Thursday.

The board also had a little something for the tax man. Members set its property tax rates for 2023. They’re unchanged.

The board voted to name the Centerville athletic field for Karl Young Sr. And members adopted a 2023-24 calendar with minor tweaks to reflect its decision to institute block scheduling at parish high schools next year.

Under the new calendar, the first day of classes for students will be Aug. 8. The last day for students will be May 22.

Student breaks for the year include the fall break Oct. 9-10; the Thanksgiving break Nov. 20-24; the Christmas holiday Dec. 22-Jan. 3; the Mardi Gras break Feb. 12-16; and the Easter holiday March 25-April 1.

The LEAP tests will be administered between April 15 and May 17.

The Centerville athletic fields will be renamed Young’s Stadium. Karl Young, 92, who is active in community causes, was accompanied by his wife, Micki Bodin Young, at Thursday’s meeting.

Young is the grandson of Will Young, who donated the land for the original Centerville school, said Craig Pellerin, who introduced the Youngs at Thursday’s meeting.

The property tax rates for 2023 will be:

—8.83 mills for the consolidated school tax.

—11.82 mills for Consolidated District No. 5.

—12.42 mills for Maintenance District 1, 12.73 mills for District 2 and 12.53 mills for 6th Ward District No. 3.

—Three millages for bond repayment: 10.0 mills for the entire parish, 6.0 mills for Special District 4 and 20 mills for 5th Ward Special School District No. 1, which includes Patterson and portions of Bayou Vista.

A mill is 1/10th of a cent of tax applied to each dollar of assessed valuation. Residential property is assessed on 10% of its market value. The first $7,500 of a primary
home’s assessed valuation isn’t taxed under Louisiana’s homestead exemption.

The honorees at Thursday’s meeting were:

—Evan White of Berwick High, who has been named a National Merit Scholarship finalist. The son of Brett and Mary White, he was a semifinalist last year.

—Molly Doiron, who was the top individual performer in the LHSAA Level 4 state gymnastics championships.
