Central Catholic High School’s football game at Beekman Charter Thursday has been cancelled, while Morgan City’s game has been postponed until Monday afternoon.
The Eagles were scheduled to travel to Bastrop for a Thursday evening contest but Central Catholic coach Tommy Minton said the trip was cancelled because of weather concerns associated with the long trip.

Morgan City is out of school for Fall Break Friday and Monday.

Still recovering from Laura, La. braces for another blow

Louisiana, still struggling from the damage inflicted by Hurricane Laura in August, is hunkered down again as Delta, another potentially devastating hurricane, winds toward the Gulf Coast.

At a Wednesday press conference, Gov. John Bel Edwards warned that Delta could be a hurricane throughout what is predicted to be a southwest-to-northeast sojourn across Louisiana beginning Friday afternoon.

At 4 p.m. Wednesday, the center of the five-day prediction cone looked like landfall could be west of Vermilion Bay, possibly in the Cameron Parish area already hammered by Laura.

But a hurricane watch extends from High Island, Texas, through the Tri-City area to Grand Isle. A storm surge watch extends from High Island to the Alabama-Florida border as some areas are expected to see a surge of 7-11 feet.

And, as National Weather Service meteorologist Benjamin Schott said again at Wednesday’s press conference, hurricanes land outside the forecast cone about a third of the time. If you’re in an area where a watch or warning is in place, be prepared, he said.

“The next 24 hours are critical for preparation,” Schott said.

The key factors are how much Delta will intensify over the Gulf and when it will begin its expected turn to the northeast, the turn that is predicted to bring the storm to Louisiana’s coast. Wind shear is expected to weaken Delta to some degree as it nears the coast and moves over slightly cooler water.

Schott noted that Hurricane Sally, which had Louisiana in its sights at one point according to the National Hurricane Center forecast, departed far enough from the forecast in 24-36 hours to hit east of Mobile, Alabama.

But “nobody should look at the forecast and say, ‘I don’t have to do anything …,’” Edwards said. “Everyone needs to pay attention.”

The latest forecast is for Delta to come ashore as something less than a major hurricane, but a Category 2 storm could still bring wind of 100 mph.

Delta is moving fast and may come to Louisiana at a speed of 15 mph. That reduces the risk that rain bands will park over a given area and dump catastrophic rainfall. But Delta is still expected to bring 4-8 inches of rain over a large area and up to 10 inches in some spots, enough to cause river flooding and flash flooding.

The 7- to 11-foot storm surge is expected in the area between Vermilion Bay and Port Fourchon.

“There’s definitely going to be coastal flooding well away from the center,” Schott said.

Delta follows Hurricane Laura, which Edwards said is responsible for keeping thousands of Louisiana people out of their homes more than a month after the storm.

“I’m concerned that the five hardest-hit parishes are in the [Delta] cone,” Edwards said.

Laura caused moderate damage to 38,000 buildings and major damage to 35,000. Another 10,000 buildings were destroyed, Edwards said.

Power has been restored nearly everywhere outside low-lying Cameron, but the grid lacks the redundancy that it normally has, Edwards said.

The governor pointed to one positive development: Public health statistics show no sign of a third surge in COVID-19 cases despite the scattering of evacuees from southwest Louisiana, Labor Day activities, and the opening of K-12 schools and colleges.

“A surge didn’t happen because of the degree to which people are following the mitigation measures,” Edwards said.

As Delta nears, Levee District shores up flood protection

The St. Mary Parish Levee District, already focused on flood control measures, raised the ante Tuesday as Hurricane Delta approached the Louisiana coast.
The district moved up its regular monthly meeting, scheduled for Thursday, to Tuesday and moved to prevent flooding in the Bayou Sale area southwest of Centerville, near La. 317.
The district’s board declared an emergency and approved about $118,000 to pay Frisco Industrial Contractors of Franklin to perform work designed to keep water from the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway from causing flooding in the Bayou Sale area.
Also, Director Tim Matte said Wednesday morning that the district will use sheet piles to close the Bayou Teche at the construction site of the Bayou Teche Flood Control Project near Baldwin.
The $11 million project consists of a wall with a 70-foot opening into which a gate can be placed to prevent storm surge water from moving into the bayou by way of the Charenton Canal.
The wall is in place, Matte said, but the gate hasn’t been installed. The sheet pilings will take its place.
The project was designed to offer flood protection in the Franklin-Garden City-Centerville area.
The National Weather Service is predicting 4-8 inches of rain and a storm surge of 8-10 feet along the Gulf Coast in Delta’s path.
St. Mary may get a break from some potential flooding because of low levels in area waterways.
At 6 a.m. Wednesday, the Atchafalaya River at Morgan City was at 2.9 feet, or more than 3 feet below the minor flood stage.
Lake Palourde, which often rises because of back-water flooding when the Atchafalaya is high, was at 3.43 feet Wednesday morning, more than 1.5 feet below the minor flood stage.
Also Tuesday:
—The district approved $25,800 in spending on preliminary survey work needed if the Yokeley Levee Extension can be altered to include protection for the Gulf Craft ship-building operation.
Gulf Craft originally opted out but has recently expressed interest in being included in the project.
—The district approved a $5,000 change order for the Bayou Teche Flood Control Structure.
The money would go for additional surveying and protective rip-rap to prevent scouring near the structure.
The project is being funding largely by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
Matte said the DOTD has agreed the additional work is needed.
—The board agreed to spend an extra $43,000 on the Bayou Chene Flood Control Structure.
The $80 million project, funded through the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, will create a gate that can be closed to prevent back-water flooding.
The spending approved Tuesday would protect levee construction associated with the project from erosion, at least partly with the use of reusable concrete mats.

School Board will reconsider sales tax for staff pay

The St. Mary Parish School Board will consider at Thursday’s monthly meeting in Centerville adopting a resolution at its Nov. 12 monthly meeting to call for an election to authorize a 0.45% sales and use tax.
The tax for teacher and staff raises originally was placed on a spring ballot but removed due to economic challenges associated with the coronavirus as well as “discrepancies in the ballot language,” Bagwell said in a news release at the time of its removal. The measure also drew opposition over its potential economic impacts.
Also Thursday, the board will discuss employment of general counsel.
In other action, the board will:
—Consider approving funds for the 16th Judicial District Office of the District Attorney and Family Service Division Family In Needs of Service Program for providing at-risk students services during the 2020-2021 school year.
—Recognize its Students of the Month, Mackenzie Linn, seventh grader at Berwick Junior High; Nevaeh Bouton, fifth grader at Foster Elementary in Franklin; and Laurynn Jones, fifth grader at J.B. Maitland Elementary in Morgan City.
—Recognize its Employees of the Month, Leah Nicar, seventh-grade English Language Arts teacher at Berwick Junior High; Lenette Hebert, curriculum facilitator at Foster Elementary; and Melinda Thomas, fifth grade teacher at J.B. Maitland Elementary.

—Hear from Bo Duhé, 16th Judicial District Attorney candidate; Anthony Saleme, 16th Judicial District Court Judge Division F candidate; and Roger Hamilton Jr., 16th Judicial District Court Judge Division H.
