Lake Palourde at low water

The Daily Review/Diane Miller Fears
It's the time of year when eyes turn toward river gauges in anticipation of rising water. But local waterways remain at low levels, and Lake Palourde is no exception. At 9 p.m. Monday, the National Weather Service reported that the lake was at 2.47 feet, or more than 1½ feet below the 4-foot action level and more than 2½ feet below flood stage.

More providers get COVID vaccine

Louisiana officials have provided COVID-19 vaccines to 406 providers across all 64 parishes this week, Gov. John Bel Edwards’ office said Monday.
Residents who are at least 70 years old are eligible. Vaccine supplies are limited and vaccinations are available by appointment only. The list of providers, including contact information, is available at the Louisiana Department of Health’s website.
Second doses, which are needed to get the full benefit of the vaccine, will be given at the same location as the first dose, state officials said. Appointments for the second dose will be made during the first appointment.
Almost 400,000 doses had been administered as of the most recent state update posted Thursday.
Hospital workers and nursing home residents and staff were the first people eligible when the federal government made vaccine available in mid-December. Dr. Joseph Kanter, who leads the state Office of Public Health, said only 26% of nursing home workers had taken advantage of the federal program offering vaccinations at those facilities.
Next in line were first responders such as emergency medical services workers, fire personnel and law enforcement. Eligibility has been expanded to anyone who is at least 70 years old.
Other vaccine-eligible groups include health clinic and dental office workers; home care providers and recipients; dialysis providers and recipients; students, residents and staff of allied health schools; and health-related support personnel for labs, mortuaries and pharmacies.
Additional groups will be added as the federal government provides more vaccine doses and demand wanes from the roughly 889,000 people who are eligible, state officials said.
The federal government said it would send 67,350 COVID-19 vaccine doses to Louisiana this week, up from 58,150 doses last week. Edwards said he expected the state to continue to receive the higher number for at least the next few weeks.

February 3, 1935 — January 30, 2021
Maxine Ozio Galler, 85, a resident of Morgan City, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at Ochsner St. Mary in Morgan City surrounded by her children. Maxine was born on February 3, 1935 in Morgan City, the daughter of Calvin and Ella Ozio. Maxine was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and Nicholls State University.
Affectionately known by her many students as, “Mrs. Galler,” she worked 31 years for the St. Mary Parish School Board as a kindergarten teacher at M.E. Norman Elementary. When asked why she chose kindergarten, she would say that at least at that age the children could still look up at her. Prior to that, she worked for Ms. Hazel Smiley’s day school.
Maxine retired in 2003, and she enjoyed being at home and working in her yard. She took pride in her garden as well as her front flowerbeds with petunias and other flowers. She liked to sit on the back patio and watch her grandchildren play and continued being a teacher, teaching them their letters and sounds. Maxine enjoyed cooking and celebrating with her family for holidays, birthdays, and special events. Also, she enjoyed watching LSU play when she could catch the game as well as was a big fan of the New Orleans Saints every Sunday. She missed being able to attend church because of the pandemic, but enjoyed watching it at home.
Maxine will be greatly missed by her two children, Michael E. Galler III and wife Tina Bergeron Galler of Morgan City, and Mona Lisa Galler Hahn and husband Neal Hahn of Lafayette, LA. She will be greatly missed by all four grandchildren and their spouses: Kristen Galler Thibodeaux and husband Christopher of Houma, LA; Alyssa Galler Avet and husband Christopher of Houma, LA; Cherie Hahn Latiolais and husband Derek of Youngsville, LA; Katelyn Hahn Guidry and husband Philip of Broussard, LA. She also leaves behind three great-grandchildren: Jace Paul Latiolais, Joseph Robert Thibodeaux, and Austin Michael Latiolais.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin J. Ozio and Ella Duplantis Ozio, and husband Michael E. Galler Jr.
The family would like to thank the ER and ICU staff of Ochsner St. Mary and Dr. William Cefalu Jr. and his staff for all of the loving care during the last day’s events. Also, a special thanks goes out to the many people with Cardiovascular Institute of the South in both Morgan City and Houma for all their efforts.
Due to COVID, concerns a private family ceremony will be held at Twin City Funeral Home on Thursday, February 4, 2021. A service and rosary will be said, and interment will follow at the family tomb at St. Joseph Cemetery in Thibodaux, Louisiana. The family asks that friends and family members continue to offer condolences via phone and social media until such a time a Mass can be held.

Rodrigue was arrested following the execution of a search warrant at the Gerald Street address on Friday afternoon.
As part of an ongoing parishwide narcotics investigation, a combined effort between the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana State Police, agents developed information indicating that Rodrigue was involved in illegal drug activity in the Assumption Parish area.
As a result of that investigative process, agents secured a search warrant for the property on Gerald Street. Agents converged on that property Friday afternoon and conducted the pre-ordered search. As a result of that search, agents seized a significant amount of illegal drugs and paraphernalia.
Rodrigue was arrested and booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Facility pending a bond hearing.

The deputy also noted the passenger identified as Rivere to be moving about inside the passenger capsule of the vehicle.
The deputy summoned a K-9 unit to the scene. The K-9 conducted an open-air sniff of the vehicle and alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics.
A search of the vehicle yielded a quantity of heroin and assorted drug paraphernalia.

Common symptoms of eating disorders

Eating disorders are a significant problem across the globe. Studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and in the journal Current Opinion in Psychiatry estimate that eating disorders affect at least 9% of the population worldwide. Though such numbers are troubling, the National Eating Disorders Association notes that eating disorders are treatable.
Chances for recovery from an eating disorders increases the earlier a disorder is detected. That underscores the importance of learning to recognize some of the common symptoms of eating disorders.
The NEDA breaks such symptoms down into two categories: emotional/behavioral and physical. While familiarizing oneself with these categories and the symptoms within them is a useful first step toward learning about eating disorders, the NEDA points out that the list should not be mistaken for a checklist.
Warning signs vary depending on the disorder, and some symptoms may not fit neatly into either category. In addition, people with eating disorders generally do not have all of these symptoms at once.
Emotional and behavioral
Emotional and behavioral symptoms of eating disorders are generally behaviors and attitudes that indicate that weight loss, dieting and control of food are becoming primary concerns. Such behaviors and attitudes may include:
—A preoccupation with weight, food, calories, carbohydrates, fat grams. and dieting
—Refusal to eat certain foods: A refusal to eat certain foods may progress to restrictions against whole categories of foods, such as carbohydrates.
—Appears uncomfortable eating around others.
—Adherence to certain food rituals: For example, someone with an eating disorder may eat only a particular food or food group, including condiments, or chew excessively. Others may not allow foods to touch.
—Skipping meals or taking small portions of food at regular meals.
—Adherence to new practices with food or fad diets, including cutting out entire food groups (no sugar, no carbs, no dairy, vegetarianism/veganism).
—Withdrawal from usual friends and activities.
—Frequent dieting.
—Extreme concern with body size and shape.
—Frequent checking in the mirror for perceived flaws in appearance.
—Extreme mood swings.
Physical
Some physical symptoms of eating disorders may be hard for loved ones to recognize. For example, NEDA notes fluctuations in weight, both up and down, are a physical symptom of eating disorders. However, someone with an eating disorder may begin wearing clothing to cover up such fluctuations.
That’s why it’s so important that loved ones, such as parents and siblings, learn to recognize the other physical symptoms of eating disorders, some of which may be subtle.
—Stomach cramps or other non-specific gastrointestinal complaints: For example, someone with an eating disorder may complain about being constipated or indicate they’re experiencing acid reflux.
—Menstrual irregularities: Adolescents and women may miss periods or only have a period while on hormonal contraceptives (the NEDA notes this is not considered a “true” period).
—Difficulties concentrating.
—Abnormal laboratory findings: Blood tests during doctor’s appointments may reveal anemia, low thyroid and hormone levels, low potassium, or low white and red blood cell counts.
—Dizziness, especially upon standing.
—Fainting spells or syncope, a condition marked by a temporary loss of consciousness caused by a fall in blood pressure.
—Feeling cold all the time.
—Sleep problems.
—Cuts and calluses across the top of finger joints: These cuts and calluses suggest a person is inducing vomiting, a behavior associated with the eating disorder bulimia.
—Dental problems, such as enamel erosion, cavities, and tooth sensitivity.
—Dry skin and hair, and brittle nails.
—Swelling around area of salivary glands.
—Fine hair on body.
—Cavities, or discoloration of teeth, typically resulting from vomiting.
—Muscle weakness.
—Yellow skin (in context of eating large amounts of carrots).
—Cold, mottled hands and feet or swelling of feet.
—Wounds that heal poorly.
—Impaired immune functioning.
Eating disorders affect people from all walks of life. Learning to recognize the symptoms of eating disorders can be an important first step toward seeking treatment for yourself or a loved one.
