Local dies in Iberia Parish crash

A Franklin resident died in a vehicle crash in Iberia Parish Wednesday.
Louisiana State Police report that the two-vehicle accident happened Wednesday morning on La. 86 near Aucoin Road.
The initial investigation revealed that the crash occurred as 36-year old Jesse Romero of Hondo, Texas, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet truck westbound on La. 86. For unknown reasons, Romero crossed into the eastbound lane of travel and struck a 2007 Toyota Sienna, driven by 58-year old Jody Charpentier of Franklin.
Romero was not wearing a seat belt and suffered critical injuries. Romero was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Jody Charpentier was wearing a seat belt, but sustained fatal injuries. Charpentier was pronounced dead on scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office.
Impairment is unknown at this time, and toxicology samples were taken from both drivers, the results of which are pending. This crash remains under investigation.

Traffic stop yields drugs

A speeding vehicle was pulled over by a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Deputy and led to arrests on drug charges Tuesday.
Tyler M. Ledet, 20, of Houma, was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, transactions involving drug proceeds, and illegal carrying of weapons in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance.
Trenton J. Dupree, 20, of Houma, was arrested Tuesday on charges of distribution of marijuana and transactions involving drug proceeds.
While patrolling US 90, a deputy reportedly observed a vehicle speeding at 66 mph in a posted 45 mph construction zone in Berwick. The deputy conducted a traffic stop and observed the vehicle drive into the median. The deputy also saw that the vehicle did not have an inspection sticker displayed.
The deputy spoke with three occupants in the vehicle including the driver, Ledet, and passenger, Dupree. The deputy received consent to search the pickup truck and reportedly found a digital scale with pieces of marijuana on it.
The Narcotics Section K-9 Unit and narcotics detectives arrived on scene to assist. K-9 “Buddy” indicated the presence of the odor of illegal drugs inside a backpack and a safe in the truck. Inside those containers, detectives reportedly found bags of high grade marijuana, cigars, plastic baggies and $9,000 in cash. Detectives also reportedly found a rifle in the bed of the truck and $652 in cash on Ledet.
Through investigation, narcotics detectives collected evidence that Ledet and Dupree sold marijuana and that the money was derived from those transactions. The deputy issued Ledet a citation for speeding, driving in the median and no motor vehicle inspection. Ledet and Dupree were transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. No bail is set.

Babies Romeo and Juliette make hospital debut

LEESBURG, Fla. (AP) — Two sets of new parents were surprised to learn their babies were part of a Shakespearean connection at a Florida hospital just two weeks after another pair of infants premiered as Romeo and Juliet on the same day at a hospital in South Carolina.
The Orlando Sentinel reports Juliette Crouch was born Friday morning at Leesburg Regional Medical Center, northwest of Orlando. Hours later, Romeo Kidd made his debut down the hallway.
Hospital privacy laws almost kept the drama from playing out. But a nurse asked Carolyn Kidd her baby’s name and said a Juliette was born earlier that day. She just couldn’t tell them which room Juliette’s parents were in.
“I was completely shocked by it,” Marie Crouch said, adding that she’d heard about the babies born March 19 in a Hardeeville, South Carolina, hospital. Baby Juliet in South Carolina is spelled as Shakespeare wrote the name. “I had no clue the same thing was going to happen to us,” Marie Crouch said.
In spite of the hospital rules, the two central Florida families began searching for each other.
“I was going to walk down the hallway and say, ‘Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?’” Justin Crouch, Juliette’s father, said.
The nurses were overjoyed when Romeo’s family met Juliette’s family. Lots of pictures were snapped and later in the day, the newspaper reported, hospital officials dressed Romeo in a tuxedo and Juliette in a dress for more pictures.
The couples promised to meet next year to celebrate their babies’ first birthday. It turns out the families have lots in common. Marie Crouch and Carolyn Kidd are each 32 years old and they both have 2-year-old daughters. The families live near each other as well.
“They may end up all going to the same schools one day,” said Justin Crouch, 30.
They exchanged contact information, unlike in “Romeo & Juliet” where the families were mortal enemies.
“It was a cool coincidence,” said Romeo’s father, Dana Kidd, 35.

Collection of war letters preserves our military past

DEAR READERS: Today marks the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I. In commemoration, I’m mentioning a special initiative to save America’s war letters. Almost 20 years ago I wrote about a historian, Andy Carroll, who had launched a project to seek out and preserve war-related letters as a way of honoring and remembering our veterans, troops and their loved ones. After the column appeared, Andy was deluged with responses. Today that collection holds approximately 100,000 wartime correspondences — from handwritten letters penned during the American Revolution and Civil War, to emails from Iraq and Afghanistan. Andy has donated the entire ...
