City warns residents of phone scam

Morgan City officials warn residents of a phone scam going around where the caller claims residents owe money on their utility bills.

City Hall is receiving numerous calls from residents and businesses stating that they have just received notification by phone from a government agency saying that their utility bill is past due and that if money is not received, all utilities will be turned off, said Marc Folse, the city’s chief administrative officer.

A 1-800 number is given with an account number. When contacted, the city got no response, Folse said.

These calls are scams, and the city of Morgan City has a process to handle past due accounts, Folse said. Do not offer any bank accounts numbers. If you have any questions about your city account, contact City Hall Utility Department at 985-385-1770.
