(Updated) Fire destroys Patterson home

Pot caught fire on stove; no injuries reported

A fire destroyed a Main Street home Monday evening in Patterson after a pot caught fire on a stove, but no one was injured in the fire, Patterson Fire Chief Scott Domingue said.

The Patterson Volunteer Fire Department received a call at 5:38 p.m. Monday reporting a fire in the 700 block of Main Street. Firefighters arrived on scene a few minutes later. Upon arrival, the house was fully involved with flames, Domingue said.

Patterson firefighters contacted other departments for mutual aid, and firefighters from the Berwick, Bayou Vista and Morgan City fire departments responded. There was one occupant of the home, and she escaped the home uninjured, he said.

The woman told firefighters that she had a pot on the stove and left it there for a few minutes, the chief said. When she returned, the pot had caught fire. The woman tried to extinguish fire, but was unsuccessful and exited the house, Domingue said.

The fire caused severe damage to home, and it’s a “total loss.” About 60 firefighters helped fight the fire at its peak. Bayou Vista firefighters responded with the department’s aerial firetruck to help put out the fire, Domingue said.

Firefighters cleared the scene within 2 1/2 hours, and none of them were injured, though a few firefighters got slightly overheated, he said.

Sheriff's offices bust 2 on drug charges

St. Mary Sheriff Mark Hebert reported two arrests resulting in a seizure of over 20-pounds of marijuana Friday.
Keith Rhodes, 54, of 198 B La. 311 Schriever, was arrested Friday at 9:44 a.m. on charges of possession of Schedule I marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, transactions involving drug proceeds and failure to properly signal a turn.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies and Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office narcotics agents ended a long-term investigation into illegal drug trafficking with two arrests in Bayou Vista Friday morning.
Terrebonne Sheriff’s Office narcotics agents collected evidence that Boykin and Rhodes were engaged in illegal drug activity. In the early morning hours, a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office patrol deputy observed two vehicles conduct a suspicious interaction in the parking lot of a business off US 90 in Bayou Vista.
The deputy then observed a second suspicious interaction on Mars Road in Bayou Vista. As the deputy attempted to make contact with the two subjects, both left the location in separate vehicles, accelerating quickly away from the area. Deputies smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Deputies received consent to search the car and located approximately 20-pounds of high grade marijuana, a handgun, and over $6,000 in cash.
