JOAN WANNAGE GILMORE

December 14, 1953- August 10, 2017
On Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, Joan Wannage Gilmore received her angel wings at the age of 63. Joan was a former resident of Morgan City and longtime resident of Patterson.
Those left to cherish Joan’s memory are her loving husband of 48 years, Dennis Gilmore Sr. of Patterson; her children, Dennis Gilmore Jr. and his wife, Katy, of Bayou Vista, and Daniel Gilmore and his wife, Michelle, of Patterson; five grandchildren, Erik, Elyas, Matthew and his wife, Terri, Blade, and Kayden Gilmore; one great-grandson, Nathan Gilmore; three sisters, Patricia Aucoin and her husband, Steve, Deborah “Debbie” Grimball and her husband, Victor, and Anita Bagwell and her husband, Jim; one brother, Edward “Bubba” Wannage Sr. and his wife, Lisa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She joined in heaven her parents, Edward Weldon Wannage and Waveland Wannage; and one grandson, Isaac Gilmore.
The family requests that visitation be observed Monday, Aug. 14, 2017, from 10 a.m. until time of services at 2 p.m. at Hargrave Funeral Home. Burial will be held privately at a later date.

GOLDEN GROW MICKLER

October 20, 1920-August 9, 2017

Golden Grow “Aunt Poodle” Mickler, 96, a resident of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, while visiting her sister in Bayou Vista, she was surrounded by her loving family.

Golden was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Morgan City, the daughter of Eugene and Levie Cancienne Grow.

She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by two daughters, Christina Gerson of New Smyrna Beach, Florida and Alice Brown of Coca, Florida; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Vada Breaux of Bayou Vista.

Golden was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Levie Cancienne Grow; husband, Fred Mickler; one daughter, Rosemary “Rosie” Johnston; and four brothers, Wilbur Grow, Edison Grow, Gordon Grow and Ira Grow.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Monsignor J. Douglas Courville celebrating the Mass. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, at Twin City Funeral Home with a rosary being prayed at 10 a.m. Graveside services will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017, in Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery in Edgewater, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in Golden’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000 Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908.

Pre-K kids will receive assignments on Monday

CENTERVILLE — Pre-kindergarten students in St. Mary Parish will go back to school next week as teachers finish up screening and finalizing class lists at each elementary school.
Superintendent Leonard Armato said at Thursday’s school board meeting that parents will be notified of pre-K school assignments and report dates on Monday.
Teachers will host parent meetings on Tuesday.
Half the pre-K students will report for their first day of school Wednesday, and the other half will report Thursday.
Also Thursday, Armato offered his gratitude to teachers and students for an excellent opening week for the 2017-18 school year
Armato said first-week attendance numbers are being closely monitored and school personnel are making phone calls to parents whose children are currently on rosters but have not been pre-sent this week.
“I strongly encourage parents to immediately get their child to school to avoid a non-attendance failure,” Armato said.

JOAN CRAPPELL OLIVIER

November 30, 1944-August 10, 2017

Joan Crappell Olivier, 72, a resident of Bayou Vista, passed away Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Joan was born Nov. 30, 1944, in St. Paul, Minnesota, the daughter of Wilton Crappell and Virginia Furchner.

Joan loved her family and was always there for them any time they needed her. She was always a crafty person and loved to do craft projects as well as sewing. In her free time she always loved to go shopping and enjoyed baking.

She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by three sons, Eroy Acosta and companion Tysie, Troy Aucoin and wife June, and Scott Vaughn and wife Julie; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Hufstetler and husband James with whom Joan had been living for the last four years.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Wilton and Virginia Furchner Crappell; two daughters, Vickie Toups and Lisa Folse; one nephew, Wilton Crappell Jr.; former husband, Eddie Oliver; and former companion, Donald LeBlanc.

The family would like to thank Dr. Francis Metz III and Notre Dame Hospice for the loving care that they gave to Ms. Joan.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, 2107, at Twin City Funeral Home with a visitation being held from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.

EVE SUTTOON

Eve Suttoon, 61, a native of Morgan City, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017.

She is survived by four children, Travis Suttoon, Aubrey Suttoon, Katie Richard and Jacob Thompson; seven grandchildren; parents, Herman and Ruby Pellerin; four brothers, Herman Pellerin Jr., Keith Pellerin, Craig Pellerin and Carl Pellerin; two sisters, Ruby Lemoine and Kathy

DeHart; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 p.m. with a service at 6 p.m. at Hargrave Funeral Home, with dismissal following.

Hargrave Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Services set for Milo Nickel, Sr., longtime President/COO of LSN

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church for Milo Addison Nickel, Sr., 85, who passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. prior to the services. Monsignor Charles DuBois will officiate for the services and Kenneth Privat will give the eulogy.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sybil Rourke Nickel of Crowley; his sons, Milo A. Nickel, Jr. and his wife, Erin O'Carroll Nickel of Lake Charles and Mark Nickel of Crowley; his grandchildren, Milo A Nickel III, Evan A. Nickel, Joshua Graham Nickel, Ellen Katherine Nickel and Mary Margaret Nickel, all of Lake Charles, Mary Elise Nickel and Elizabeth Nickel Boulet and her husband, PJ Boulet, all of Crowley; his great grandchildren, Kate Elizabeth and Peter John Boulet, both of Crowley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Milo E. Nickel and Minerva Ann Crane Nickel; one sister, Francis Ella Hones and his brother-in-law, Don Hones.
He was born November 10, 1931 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He served in the United States Air Force as a Tech Sergeant flying in the Korean War.
Nickel spent his entire career in the newspaper business, beginning by working with his dad at the Chippewa Herald Telegram as Advertising Director.
In 1957, he moved to Louisiana where he worked as a sales representative with the Lafayette Daily Advertiser. Later that year, he was named General Manager of the Rayne-Acadian Tribune and the Church Point News. He was founding publisher of the Crowley-Post Herald and in 1974 he was the founding publisher of the merged Crowley Post-Herald and Crowley Daily Signal which became the Crowley Post-Signal.
Nickel was an old time newspaper man who insisted that his editors and reporters wrote straight news stories without editorializing, unlike many of the reporters who slanted news stories with their personal views.
Nickel was known for his commitment to the news and dedication to the community that he made his home for more than half-a-century. His column, "The MAN" was well received among Post-Signal readers and was known as a forum where Nickel would say "That's my story and I'm sticking to it."
He has served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Louisiana State Newspapers, Inc. which consisted of over 33 newspapers and numerous total market shoppers in Louisiana and Mississippi.
He was recognized for numerous awards with the Louisiana Press Association, which he also served as a board member. He was also a board member of the National Newspaper Association. Throughout his newspaper career he was presented awards for his dedication and service to Crowley and the Acadia Parish community and for his in-depth coverage of local events, politics and area organizations.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church. He had been a member of the American Legion Post 15 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had served as a member of the board of directors of the Crowley Chamber of Commerce and the International Rice Festival.
Other organizations he was involved with included Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, Professional Bass Anglers of America, Notre Dame Athletic Club, Cajun Chapter Ducks Unlimited, where he served as chairman, Rayne Lions Club and Rayne Young Men's Business Club. He was also a founding member of the Summit Group in Crowley.
He loved Southwest Louisiana and spent his leisure time enjoying what he loved most which was fishing and hunting.
His family would like to thank all those who provided for his care. They include M.D. Anderson doctors and staff, Encore Healthcare and Rehabilitation staff, Acadia General Hospital doctors and staff, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital doctors and staff. Also a special thanks to the following doctors, Dr. Joseph Brierre, Dr. Satinder Saini, Dr. Max Trahan and Dr. Victor Tedesco.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or St. Michael Catholic Elementary School.

Coastal board will meet in Morgan City

The Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority Board will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Municipal Auditorium, 728 Myrtle St. in Morgan City.
Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority is the single state entity with authority to develop, articulate, implement and enforce a comprehensive coastal restoration and protection master plan.

Autism Society Trivia Night Aug. 19

The Autism Society’s third annual Trivia Night will be Aug. 19 at the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium, 728 Myrtle St.

The doors will open at 5 p.m. The games begin at 6 p.m.

Registration costs $150 per table or $25 per person. A maximum of six people will be allowed on each team. Register online at bayouautism.org.

Music will be provided after the event by Driftwood.
