Local lawmakers hope for early special session

Area legislators hope Gov. John Bel Edwards will call for a special session after Mardi Gras and before the regular session to address the $1 billion fiscal cliff for the 2018-19 fiscal year when temporary taxes expire. Those temporary taxes included a 1-cent sales tax increase put in place in 2016. The 2018 regular session is slated to begin March 12. State government’s fiscal year begins July 1. TOMMY JAMES BROUSSARD SR.

October 16, 1945- January 30, 2018
Tommy James Broussard Sr. of Morgan City, age 72, passed away Tuesday evening, Jan. 30, 2018, at his home with his wife by his side.
Tommy was born Oct. 16, 1945 in Morgan City, the seventh of 13 children to the late Louis and Amelie Rebert Broussard.
Working tirelessly since the age of 14, Tommy joined the U.S. Army in 1966 and served his country honorably in Vietnam. Upon his return, he married the former Evelyn Michel in March 1967, and together they raised three children at their places in Morgan City and Belle River; celebrating their 50th anniversary last March.
Like most of his brothers, Tommy was employed nearly all of his life as a welder; working offshore on facility and pipe lay operations and at various fabrication yards. Tommy was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, American Legion Post 242, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4222, and other veterans organizations. Tommy thoroughly enjoyed cooking and he loved spending time with his family.
Besides his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by his brother, Lloyd and his sister, Emelda Lightsey.
Tommy is survived by Evelyn and his three sons; TJ and wife Janet of Boutte, Louisiana, Mark of Morgan City, and John and wife Sara of Morgan City; his six grandchildren, David, Mark Jr., Laura, Caroline, Sarah and Elyse; his siblings, Merlin and wife Dorothy, George and wife Genevieve, Alberta Adams, Beulah Bourgeois and husband Mike, Floyd and wife Diane, Robert and wife Debbie, Leroy and wife Lana, Janet Fincher and husband David, Janice Courville and husband Armond, and Clint; his brother-in-law, Drew Michel and wife Peggy; his sisters-in-law, Mary Jane and Anna Belle; as well as many, many wonderful nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, at Sacred Heart Church in Morgan City, with Father Freddie Decal officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. before the mass.

ANNA MAE VERRET METREJEAN

April 1, 1940- January 31, 2018
Anna Mae Verret Metrejean, 77, a resident of Bayou Vista, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Anna Mae was born April 1, 1940, in Hackberry, Louisiana, the daughter of David Verrett and Sedolia DeHart Verret.
She was a faithful and active parishioner of St. Bernadette Catholic Church where she served in the choir, was a member of the Come Lord Jesus group, and over the last several years she made it her personal project to make sure the St. Joseph Altar was done. She went on many overseas pilgrimages with her church friends. She was very talented and gifted in many ways; she was a talented seamstress and in her younger years, she had a dream of one day designing wedding dresses. Anna Mae was a spiritual inspiration to many and brought peace wherever she went. She was a loving mother, awesome grandmother and friend to many.
She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by four children, Alvin Joseph “PT” Metrejean Jr. and wife Dana of Bayou Vista, and Sheryll Lanclos and husband Glen, Darlene Chauvin and husband Walter “Sonny” Chauvin III, and Gail Cantrell and husband David “Pud”, all of Verdunville; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Raymond Verret Sr. and wife Lola of Patterson, and Ernest Verret Sr. and wife Linda of Ricohoc.
Anna Mae was preceded in death by her parents, David and Sedolia DeHart Verret; husband, Alvin J. “T Van” Metrejean Sr.; two grandchildren, Samantha Cantrell and Betsy Lanclos; two brothers, Jessie Verret and Wilton Verret; and two sisters, Edith Gros and Ina Faye Bryant.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, 2018, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church with Father William Rogalla celebrating Mass. A visitation will be held in the parish hall from 10 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 1:15 p.m. Following, Mass Anna Mae will be laid to rest in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum.

DON COLE

Don Cole, 40, a native of Terrebonne Parish and resident of Thibodaux, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Friday at Allen Chapel AME Church in Thibodaux.
He is survived by his wife, Rockie Short Cole; sons, Deonte’ Cole and Deondre’ Cole; daughters, Deshante’ Cole and Destinee’ Cole, all of Thibodaux; grandchild; parents, Peggy Cole Johnson and James Anderson Jr., both of Thibodaux; three brothers, Adrian Cole of Franklin, Kevin Anderson of Morgan City and Christopher Holmes of Thibodaux; sister, Ester Dapremont of Thibodaux; and a companion.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, paternal grandparents and maternal grandparents.

MILLARD WILLIAMS SR.

Millard Williams Sr., 85, a native of Terrebonne Parish and a resident of Houma, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018.
Visitation will be Saturday from 8 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. at St. Lucy Catholic Church in Houma. Burial will follow in St. Francis No. 2 Cemetery.
He is survived by his son, Millard Williams Jr. of Morgan City; daughter, Rhonda Williams of Houma; granddaughter; and a host of other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and siblings.

LINDA C. THOMAS

Linda Collins Thomas, 64, a native of Terrebonne Parish and a resident of Gray, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eagle Wright Baptist Church in Gray. Burial will follow in Halfway Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Blane Thomas of Gray; son, Samuel Williams Jr. of Gray; daughter, Gail Coleman of Franklin; five grandchildren; seven brothers, Ernest Collins, Carl Harris, Joseph Harris, Daniel Antoine and Alfred Collins, all of Gray, Paul Harris of Morgan City and Charles Collins of Franklin; six sisters, Brenda Barrow, Yvonne Jackson, Laurie Ward, Janis McGuin and Carolyn Mackie, all of Gray, and Valerie Adams of Morgan City; and a host of other relatives.

LEONARD SIMS SR.

Leonard Sims Sr., 70, a native of Anguilla, Mississippi and resident of Houma, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Friday at Eagle Wright Baptist Church in Gray. Burial will follow in Southdown Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Coit Sims; sons, Demond Sims and Chucky Antoine, all of Houma; daughters, Linda Coston of Franklin, Campanella Antoine of Morgan City and Leonesha Diggs of Houma; 22 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Henry Sims and Cleveland Sims Sr., both of Houma; sisters, Burnese Edmond of Morgan City, and Josie Green and Texie Johnson, both of Houma; and a host of other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a son, parents, sister, paternal grandparents and maternal grandparents.

Ethel Poindexter, 58, a native of Lafourche Parish and resident of Raceland, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2018.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until services at 11 Saturday at New Zion Baptist Church in Houma. Burial will follow in Crescent Farm Cemetery.
She is survived by her daughter, Taquon Poindexter; brothers, Sidney Poindexter, Harry Pierre and Norman Pierre, all of Raceland, and Willie Williams of Franklin; sisters, Lorraine Fuselier of Morgan City, and Rita Meads, Sherry Nixon, Patricia Lewis and Rose Tucker, all of Raceland; and a host of other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, sisters and grandparents.
