Ribbon-cutting for Thurston Ophthalmology

MCHS honors athletes in spring sports

The Morgan City High School Athletic Department held its Spring Sports Awards Ceremony Tuesday at the school.
Athletes who participate in cheerleading, dance team, boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ bowling, boys’ and girls’ tennis, boys’ and girls’ golf, boys’ and girls’ track and field, baseball and softball were honored.

DORETHA WILLIAMS

Doretha Williams, 91, a native of Terrebonne Parish and a resident of Houma, La. passed away peacefully at 11:10 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2018.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until funeral time at the church. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Beacon Light Baptist Church in Gray, La. Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery, 3658 W. Main in Gray, La.
She is survived by her sons Frederick Wallis of Franklin and Lloyd Wallis Jr. of Morgan City; a daughter, Geraldine W. Simmons of Houma; twelve grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; brother, Henry J. Williams of Houma; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her sons, a granddaughter, a great-grandson; parents, three sisters, paternal grandparents, maternal grandparents, a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law.

ALFRED O’GWIN SR.

Alfred O’Gwin Sr., 85, a native Morgan City, Louisiana and resident of Baton Rouge, La. was born May 5, 1927 and passed on June 27, 2012 at his home.
Graveside Inurnment services will be held on Saturday, Mary 5, 2018 at 2 p.m. in the Morgan City Cemetery. Rev. C. F. Smith will officiate the services. East St. Mary Funeral Squad will perform at graveside.
Alfred served our country in the United States Navy during World War II. He received an honorable discharge.
Memories of Alfred will remain in the hearts of his two daughters, six sons, seventeen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, four nieces, two nephews, an aunt, Juanita Verdine Carter of Los Angeles, Calif. and a host of other relatives and friends.
Alfred was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two brothers and a beloved niece.

Lynn Michael Green, 57, a native of Franklin, La. and a resident of Colfax, La., passed away on Sunday April 28, 2018 at 7:37 p.m. in Colfax, La.

Barrone Keith Charles, 51, a resident and native of Franklin, La. passed away peacefully on Monday, April 23, 2018 at 8:23 a.m. at Iberia Medical Center.

Police Reports 5-2-18

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Scott Anslum reported the following arrests:
Shawn Ramagos, 28, of 1049 Ramos St., Siracusaville, was arrested Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of criminal neglect of family.
Deputies responding to a call for service regarding a disturbance at a residence in Siracusaville made contact with Ramagos and located the active warrant for his arrest. Ramagos was transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking.
Shane Granger, 30, of 735 Chetta Lane, Amelia, was arrested Tuesday at 2:38 p.m. on a warrant for failure to appear on charges of possession of marijuana, no vehicle insurance, operating a vehicle without a driver’s license and signaling required.
A deputy working in the Amelia area made contact with Granger and located the active warrant for his arrest. Granger was transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. No bail is set.
Jarrett Francis, 29, of 145 Racetrack Lane, Rayne, was arrested Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. on a warrant for failure to appear on charges of operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license and operating a vehicle without proper equipment.
Francis turned himself in at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center. Francis was released on a $1,000 bond.
Lance Haycock Jr., 25, of 607 Tunica St., Charenton, was arrested Tuesday at 11:57 a.m. on three warrants for failure to appear on charges of no driver’s license, possession of open alcoholic containers in motor vehicles, taking alligators during closed season, no insurance, careless operation and operating a vehicle in an unsafe condition.
A Corrections Division deputy transported Haycock from the Iberia Parish jail to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. No bail is set.
Tawanna Thomas, 39, of 145 St. Joseph Lane, Franklin, was arrested Monday at 2:14 p.m. on a warrant for the charge of theft.
On April 18, a Narcotics Section detective began an investigation into the theft by an employee of prescription pills from a pharmacy in Bayou Vista. The detective gathered evidence that Thomas changed inventory data and stole thousands of oxycodone and hydrocodone pills valued at over $12,000 from the business over the last year. A warrant was issued for Thomas’ arrest. Thomas was located on the warrant at a residence on St. Joseph Lane in Franklin and transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. Thomas was later transported to another jail facility for housing.
Keith Tillman Jr., 21, of 104 Little Flower Lane Apt #3, Bayou Vista, was arrested Tuesday at 2:16 p.m. on charges of no driver’s license, possession of Schedule I marijuana with intent to distribute, attempted distribution of Schedule I marijuana, violation of a controlled dangerous substance law drug free zone, possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Narcotics Section detectives developed information that Tillman arranged to sell marijuana on the corner of US 90 and Delmar Avenue in Bayou Vista. Detectives surveilled the area and located Tillman in a vehicle in the parking lot of a business. Tillman was detained pending further investigation. While speaking with Tillman, detectives received consent to search the vehicle and his person. Detectives located marijuana, a handgun, and a digital scale. The drugs were located within 2,000 feet of a church. Continuing the investigation, detectives located marijuana at Tillman’s residence and collected evidence that Tillman was selling the illegal substance. Tillman was transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. No bail is set.
Franklin Third Ward Marshal Carla B. Weidenboerner reported the following arrest:
Giovonne Nelson, 34, of 210 Cedar St., Franklin, was arrested at his residence by a Franklin Deputy Marshal on a Franklin Third Ward City Court warrant for failure to appear for a review hearing on original charges of hit and run and driving without a license.
Nelson was transported to the Franklin Police Department for booking and released on a $450 cash bond.
Chitimacha Police Chief Hal Hutchinson reported the following arrests:
Lizzdayanna Chandias Reyes, 19, of Dulles Drive, Lafayette, was arrested Monday on the charge of unlawful playing of gaming devices by persons under the age of 21, and was released on a summons.
An officer responded to a tribal business in reference to underage gambling. During the investigation, it was learned that Reyes was underage, and she was arrested.
Tyrone Weber, 34, of Kerry Lane, Baldwin, was arrested Tuesday on the charge of possession with the intent to distribute Schedule II cocaine. He was transported to the parish jail.
On April 2, an officer responded to a tribal business in reference to possible drugs. During the investigation, it was learned that Weber was allegedly involved, and a warrant was obtained.
On Monday, Jeanerette Police Department arrested Weber on the warrant and he was turned over to the Chitimacha Police Department.
Franklin Police Chief Sabira McGuire reported the following arrest:
Kenneth Smith Jr., 30, of Dora Washington Road, Cade, was arrested Tuesday at 9:23 p.m. on charges of unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling and simple battery. Smith was booked, processed, and held with no bond set at the time of press release.

Council of Governments recognizes Mayor Harris

St. Mary Council of Governments welcomed Patterson’s new police chief, St. Mary Parish’s new chief deputy coroner and recognized the service of outgoing Franklin Mayor Raymond Harris, Tuesday, during their meeting at the Forest Restaurant.
Patterson Police Chief Janis Merritt remarked, “As most of you know, I’m not really talkative. I appreciate all of your support, all of your prayers and don’t be too surprised if I call.”
The parish’s retiring coroner, Dr. F.H. Metz Jr., M.D., bestowed official badges to their new respective trustees: the coroner’s badge to Interim Coroner, Dr. N. Trey Morice, M.D. and the chief deputy coroner’s badge to Dr. Lianter W. Albert, M.D.
Harris accepted his award of recognition for 31 years of service, from St. Mary Parish Councilman Dale Rogers, saying, “The time went by fast. I enjoyed my time as CFO and I enjoyed my time as mayor. It’s been a labor of love. I’ve enjoyed serving the people of Franklin.”

Second stage of costruction project to begin at port

Southern Constructors of Iberia Parish was awarded a $132,500 bid Tuesday at the monthly meeting of the board of the Port of West St. Mary.
The award marks the beginning of stage two of an ongoing Department of Transportation and Development construction project at the port.
Stage two of the 4-stage project will deal with the construction of a sand blasting building.
Reid Miller of Miller Engineers reported the plans for stage three are being drawn up now and will soon be ready to be sent to Baton Rouge for approval.
Also, a resolution was passed to certify compliance with public bid laws concerning the air compressor from stage one of the project, a requirement for the records of the DOTD.
Finally, it was reported the port’s Economic Development Administration Project is in its culminating stages of revue by the bureau at the Department of Commerce. An award will likely come soon.
