Eight Tri-City Area players earn LBCA All-Region 8 Team honors

Eight Tri-City area baseball players earned recognition on the Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association All-Region 8 Team.
Of the eight, six were from Berwick High, while the remaining two were from Morgan City.
Berwick’s selections included junior pitcher Mitchell Sanford, senior pitcher Patrick Robertson, senior catcher Lucas Hatch, senior infielder Kyle Pitre, junior infielder Zeph Hoffpauir and senior outfielder Reid Wiley.
Morgan City’s selections were senior infielder Logan Tingle and senior utility selection Morrquise Charles.
The team was chosen from players from Assumption, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Charles, Lafourche, Terrebonne and St. Mary parishes whose coaches are Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association members.
The squad’s hitter of the year was E.D. White junior Wes Toups, an LSU commit, while South Lafourche senior Blake Ougel was the Pitcher of the Year.
Sanford, an LSU commitment, finished 7-1 on the mound with a 0.94 ERA. In 53.2 innings, he surrendered 17 runs (seven earned) on 29 hits with 17 walks and 68 strikeouts.
Offensively, he batted .370 with 12 doubles, five triples, one home run, 29 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. He also scored 37 runs.
Sanford also played in the outfield where he had an .871 fielding percentage.
Robertson finished his senior season with a 6-2 record on the mound and a 2.35 ERA. In 39.2 innings, he surrendered, 19 runs (13 earned) on 33 hits with 13 walks and 42 strikeouts.
Offensively, he hit .381. Of his 40 hits, four were doubles and four were triples. He had 29 RBIs, 13 stolen bases and scored 27 runs.
Robertson, who also played in the outfield, had a .943 fielding percentage.
Pitre finished the year with a 9-3 mark on the mound with a 2.35 ERA. In 60.2 innings, he surrendered 40 runs (20 earned) on 39 hits with 29 walks and 75 strikeouts.
Offensively, he batted .467 batting with 16 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 38 RBIs, 16 stolen bases and 33 runs scored.
Pitre, who will continue his baseball career at Baton Rouge Community College, was a shortstop, too, with an .843 fielding percentage.
Hatch batted .418 with nine doubles, two triples, four home runs and 42 RBIs.
From his catcher position, Hatch had a .989 fielding percentage.
Wiley batted .463 with five doubles, one triple and 25 RBIs. He also stole 10 bases and scored 32 runs.
He had a .951 fielding percentage.
Hoffpauir batted .349 with eight doubles and six home runs. He had 39 RBIs, seven stolen bases and scored 39 runs.
He had a .957 fielding percentage.
Tingle hit .322 this season. Of hit 28 hits, one was a double, two were triples and one was a home run. He had 27 RBIs and scored 25 runs. Tingle also recorded a .528 on-base percentage, a .414 slugging percentage and stole 12 bases.
On the mound, he finished 5-2 with a 2.38 ERA. In 64.2 innings, he surrendered 49 runs (22 earned) on 70 hits with 32 walks and 66 strikeouts.
He also had an .878 fielding percentage.
Charles hit .423 this season with six doubles, one triple, six home runs and 26 RBIs. He scored 24 runs, had an on-base percentage of .549 and a slugging percentage of .747.
Defensively, Charles had a .946 fielding percentage.
Other representatives from District 7-4A, which Morgan City competes in, were: E.D. White senior pitcher Devin Desandro, South Lafourche senior utility selection Austin Cantrelle, Assumption senior utility selection Chandler Breaux, Vandebilt Catholic senior utility selection John Theriot and Assumption junior utility selection Kaleb Blanchard.

Bayou BBQ Bash scheduled for July 13-14

The 7th annual Bayou BBQ Bash is set for July 13-14, rain or shine, under the U.S. 90 bridge in downtown Morgan City.
The event, held at the corner of Second and Greenwood streets, is a Barbecue Competitors Alliance-sanctioned state championship competition. In addition to the competitive teams, locals can get in on the action.
There will also be a Corporate Cooking Team Throw-Down Challenge for bragging rights as the best corporate company cooking team in St. Mary Parish and a local competition to name the top St. Mary Parish BBQ Team that anyone can enter.
The cost to enter is $165 for competitive and local teams and $250 for corporate teams.
A kid’s barbecue competition will be held. Known as the Cannata’s Kids Q, children compete in two divisions: 13-17 years old will cook chicken legs and 12 years and under will cook pork chops. There will be a Business After Hours where the public can meet the cooks and sample their fare. The event will be held Thursday, July 12, 2018, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Morgan City to kick off this event. In addition, the Louisiana Shrimp & Petroleum Festival will unveil its 2018 poster at the Business After Hours.
On July 13, Ruff N Ready Band will perform. Live music continues Saturday, July 14, when Déjà vu takes the stage 1-5 pm.
Also on Friday, arts and crafts booths will be open 4-10 p.m., and food, drink and beer booths will be open from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
On Saturday, arts and crafts booths are open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and live music continues.
There will be food, soft drinks and beer booths selling a variety of items Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Vendors include East Gate BBQ, the Smokehouse, X-Treme Sports, and Trinity Episcopal Church.
An awards ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Grand Champion wins an exclusive 10-karat gold ring designed by Len Klutts and donated by Klutts Jewelers, 924 Seventh St. in Morgan City.
“The ring is valued at $1,400,” Klutts said. “It can be viewed at Klutts Jewelers, across from Joe’s Boots. The side features of the ring include ‘7th Annual BBQ Champ’ and crested fire and meat cleavers. The top features an image of the traveling championship barbecue trophy which debuted last year, Klutts said.
St. Mary Chamber of Commerce President Donna Meyer said that while the championship trophy travels each year, “the addition of the championship ring will make the event more personal for this year’s winner, and we thank our chamber member Len Klutts for this generous prize donation.”

GREGORY K. PINHO

September 3, 1951 - June 13, 2018
Gregory K. “Greg” Pinho passed away unexpectedly at the age of 66 on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, in Beaumont, Texas. Greg was born in Morgan City on September 3, 1951, was raised in Patterson and has resided in Port Arthur, Texas for over 20 years.
Greg had a deep love for fishing, hunting and traveling. If he wasn’t working he could be found enjoying the outdoors. For the past 41 years Greg has worked for Rowan Drilling, now Ensign Energy Services.
Those he leaves to cherish his memory include his wife, Amalia Delatorre Pinho; three children, Keith Pinho and his wife Kristi, Scott Pinho and his wife April, and Bryan Pinho; his mother, Barbara Ganaway; and three grandchildren, Gabrielle, Jenna and Collin Pinho. The eldest of four siblings, he is also survived by his brother, David Ganaway and his wife Candy; and his sisters, Phylis Alameddin and her husband Fouad, and Elizabeth Willoughby and her husband Mike; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest A. Ganaway Jr.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Friday, June 22, 2018, at Ibert’s Mortuary in Patterson beginning at 11:00 a.m., with funeral services beginning at 2:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest in the St. Joseph Cemetery Mausoleum. Father Angelo Cremaldi will officiate the services.

BEARS will take part in ham radio Field Day

When Gulf waters warm up, so do ham radio preparations for possible storms. June is the beginning of hurricane season and an increase in communication preparedness among amateur radio operators.
On Saturday and Sunday, local hams as well as ham operators nationally will kick off Field Day and practice their ability to communicate via ham radio only for 24 hours.
When other forms of communication fail, ham radio is the last line of defense to get the information out.
The Bayouland Emergency Amateur Radio Service will be taking part in Amateur Radio Relay League's Field Day June 23-24.
The public is invited to visit, observe the on the air operations, look at the displays and information on ham radio and ask any questions they would like to. The operation is open for visiting from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at 201 Everett St. in downtown in Morgan City.

30 more jobs coming to New Iberia

NEW IBERIA (AP) — Officials say a Scottish industrial rental company will expand its facilities in a Louisiana city and create 30 new jobs.
Gov. John Bel Edwards told news outlets Monday that Aggreko is expanding its operations in New Iberia and will also retain 265 employees. The 30 new jobs will have an average annual salary of $65,000, plus benefits.
The company is based in Glasgow, Scotland, and provides temporary power, heating, cooling and compressed-air services to refineries, oil and gas firms, and other sites.
Aggreko’s vice president of operations, Terry Dressel, says the new facility will include a remote operations center that will monitor fleets worldwide. The company will also centralize its inside sales and call centers in New Iberia to support its business in North America.

The Daily Review wins three first places

The Daily Review won three first places in the Louisiana Press Association competition for work published in 2017.

The results were released Saturday. The Daily Review competes in Division II for small dailies.

The Daily Review won first in the News Photo competition with a photo of a Morgan City public works crew repairing a water line on a January day.

The paper also won the Sam Hanna Award for taking first place in the Best Regular Column category.

The Daily Review won first and second in the Best News Video category with video stories about the Chez Hope Trivia Night and local preparations for Tropical Storm Cindy.
