JANICE BODIN LAJAUNIE
December 15, 1936 – July 9, 2019
Janice Bodin LaJaunie went to her eternal reward in the late morning hours on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at Iberia Extended Care Hospital with her husband at her side.
Janice was born in Baldwin on Tuesday, December 15, 1936, one of four children born to George and Agnes Bodin. She was a lifelong resident of Baldwin and was a longtime parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. She worked for many years as a secretary for the Law Office of Bauer, Darnall, Boudreaux, and McNulty.
Survivors include her husband of nearly 60 years, Robert “Boo” LaJaunie; one daughter, Robin LaJaunie; one grandson, Dustin Kirkland and his wife Paige; one great grandson and one great granddaughter; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by one son, Robert J. “Bobby” LaJaunie Jr.; her parents, George L. Bodin Sr. and Agnes Talbot Bodin; two brothers, George L. Bodin Jr. and Alfred “Freddie” Bodin; and one sister, Agnes “Cele” Boudreaux.

No garbage pickup Friday, Saturday in Morgan City
Republic Services has notified Morgan City officials that it has canceled all garbage pickup services on Friday and Saturday. Garbage pickup will resume on Monday. Residents are asked to secure their garbage cans during this weather event.
Morgan City court to close Friday due to storm
The City Court of Morgan City will be closed on Friday due to the severe weather approaching the Tri-City area.
Voluntary evacuation order issued for south of Intracoastal
As of noon Thursday, St. Mary Parish President David Hanagriff has issued a voluntary evacuation order for the area south of the Intracoastal Waterway. He also signed a state of emergency declaration Wednesday night, and parish government offices will close at noon Friday due to the threat of Tropical Storm Barry.
Parish braces for Barry
Storm surge, heavy rains and hurricane conditions are possible across the north-central Gulf Coast over the next few days.
A tropical storm warning is now in effect for the Louisiana coast from the mouth of the Pearl River to Morgan City. A storm surge warning is now in effect for the Louisiana coast from the mouth of the Atchafalaya River to Shell Beach.
Parish President David Hanagriff plans to issue a voluntary evacuation recommendation at noon for areas south of the Intracoastal Waterway.
Parish offices will be closed at noon Friday, as well as Franklin and Baldwin. The parish assessor's office will be closed Friday.
At 10 a.m., the center of Tropical Storm Barry was located near latitude 27.8 North, longitude 88.7 West. Barry is moving toward the west near 5 mph and this motion is expected to continue today. A turn toward the west-northwest is expected tonight, followed by a turn toward the northwest on Friday. On the forecast track the center of Barry will be near the central or southeastern coast of Louisiana Friday night or Saturday.
Reports from Air Force Reserve and NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds have increased to near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is expected during the next day or two, and Barry could become a hurricane late Friday or early Saturday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles mainly to the southeast of the center.
Locally, St. Mary Parish residents of the unincorporated areas can obtain sandbags at the Four Corners Fire Department, the Hanson Canal area parish barn, the parish barn in Bayou Vista and beneath the bridge in Amelia.
Sandbags will be available for Franklin residents at the Public Works building on Iberia Street. Residents must bring their own shovel. Baldwin is providing the elderly with already bagged sand; others should bring their own shovel and bags will be provided.
The St. Mary Levee District has announced that the Phillip Luke flood protection structure on the Franklin Canal will be closed on Friday morning. The canal will then be pumped down to a favorable level for added storage.
Police: Man charged with careless operation, driving under suspension
A 36-year-old man was arrested on U.S. 90 in Berwick and charged with driving under suspension and careless operation with a crash, Police Chief David Leonard Sr. reported.
—Eric Fontenot Jr., 36, of Teche Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 7:07 a.m. Wednesday on charges of driving under suspension and careless operation with a crash. Fontenot posted $252 bail.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported that officers responded to 37 calls and reported the following arrests:
—Graig Albarado, 55, of North Sterling Street in Lafayette, was arrested at 7:19 a.m. Wednesday on charges of improper lane usage, driving under suspension, no motor vehicle insurance and no vehicle registration.
An officer on patrol observed a vehicle commit a traffic violation in the area of Federal and Brashear avenues. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as Albarado.
A computer check revealed the vehicle he was driving had no current insurance, registration and his driver’s license was under suspension, Blair said. He was jailed.
—Glen Anthony Johnson, 60, of Lincoln Avenue in Baldwin, was arrested at 12:25 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant charging him with three counts of failure to appear in court. Johnson was located at parish jail and arrested on a city court warrant. He was jailed.
—Brandy Solar, 40, of Emy Lane in Patterson, was arrested at 8:03 a.m. Thursday on a warrant charging her with probation violation. Solar turned herself in at the police department on a city court warrant. She was jailed.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Blaise Smith reported that deputies responded to 35 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrest in east St. Mary Parish:
—Brock John Savoie, 28, of Hebert Lane in St. Martinville, was arrested at 8:43 a.m. Wednesday on a charge of driving under suspension.
A deputy was stationary on U.S. 90 east in Berwick when he observed a vehicle without an operating tail light. The deputy conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, identified as Savoie. The deputy was advised by dispatch that Savoie was driving under suspension, the sheriff said. Savoie was released on a summons to appear in court Oct. 16.
Patterson Police Chief Garrett Grogan reported no arrests.

Barry has moved little over the past few hours, but a motion toward the west near 3 mph (5 km/h) is expected to resume later tonight. A turn toward the northwest is expected on Friday, followed by a turn toward the north on Saturday. On the forecast track, the center of Barry will be near or over the central or southeastern coast of Louisiana Friday night or Saturday, and then move inland into the lower Mississippi Valley on Sunday.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. Strengthening is expected during the next day or two, and Barry could become a hurricane late Friday or early Saturday when the center is near the Louisiana coast. Weakening is expected after Barry moves inland.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km) from the center.
The minimum central pressure estimated by data from NOAA and Air Force reconnaissance aircraft is 1001 mb (29.56 inches).

July Yard of the Month presented
Wayne and Lindsay Lindsey were presented one of the Patterson Garden Club Yard of the Month awards for July. The yard is accented with crape myrtles, a bed of Indian Hawthorn, crinum, potato vine, geraniums, and more.
