AUSTIN MICHAEL JENKINS

May 26, 1998 — February 10, 2020
Austin Michael Jenkins, a gentle giant and protector ... always, was unexpectedly called to his heavenly home on Monday, February 10, 2020, at the young age of twenty one.
Austin’s wonderful memory is forever etched into the hearts of his loving parents, Nick and Chantel Jenkins; his adoring brother, Denver Jenkins; his maternal grandparents, Michael and Charmaine Oubre; his paternal grandparents, Jac and Marjane Coleman; his nanny and uncle, Christina and Steve Crawford; his uncle, Rhett Jenkins; his aunt, Jennifer Ramey; and his first cousins, Cruiz, Stevie Raé and Rinna Crawford, and Allegra, Ian and Addison Grace Ramey.
He was greeted in heaven by his great-grandparents, Harold and Floriece Besse, Woodrow and Louise Oubre, Merle and Jenice Jenkins, and Robert and Marjorie Evans.
A true outdoorsman, Austin enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting. When not outdoors, Austin could be found enjoying a good movie, listening to music, or passing time with his dog, Buddy. While Austin found great joy in spending time with his friends, he was also the kind of guy who loved quiet moments. He made sure to take time in deep thought and especially in prayer. Austin was such a remarkable young man, that he has always been told that others would honor and respect him because of the spectacular person he was and the example he lived. Proof of this truth has unfolded over the past week in so many ways. Austin was loved by everyone he knew and although he will be greatly and deeply missed, there is also deep hope and faith in seeing him again.
A time of visitation and remembrance for Austin will be held at the Lighthouse Community Church in Berwick on Sunday, February 16, 2020, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., and again, on Monday, February 17, 2020, at 10 a.m. until time of services. A Celebration of Austin’s life will take place on Monday, February 17, 2020, at 2 p.m. at the Lighthouse Community Church in Berwick with Pastor Mo Seneca officiating. Following the services, Austin will be laid to rest in the Morgan City Mausoleum.

Bicentennial Presentation: 'Ada and the Doc'

Wednesday will see another installment of this year’s Franklin Bicentennial celebration events, with this month’s presentation of “Ada and the Doc” by Fran Middleton, at 7 p.m. at the Teche Theatre for the Performing Arts.
Admission is free.
The full title of the book is, “Ada and the Doc: An Account of the Ada Leboeuf-Thomas Dreher Murder Case.” It was written by Charles M. Hargroder and was published in Feb. of 2000 by University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Middleton will be discussing the book in detail, its title case’s peculiarities and ramifications, and the effect the trial and its trappings had on the social fabric of St. Mary Parish.
Franklin Bicentennial Committee Co-Chair Diane Wiltz said of the upcoming presentation, “Of course, everyone remembers that ‘Ada and the Doc’ was a well-known story about a love triangle which ended with one person murdered, and two people hanged; and they were hanged here in Franklin, in the St. Mary Parish Courthouse square.”
Wiltz further commented that she anticipates Middleton’s presentation will not only parse through the known details of the case, but should also “shed new light on some things that have been uncovered and that continue to be investigated,” since the book’s publication.
She continued, “The historical part of that, (the case) as far as Franklin’s bicentennial is concerned, is that the hanging happened here in Franklin because we were the parish seat, and both she (Ada Leboeuf) and the doctor (Thomas Dreher) were jailed here in the parish courthouse.”
Of the bicentennial committee’s rollout matrix, Wiltz said, “Our guiding statement is that by celebrating our bicentennial, we are looking at who we were, looking at who we are, and looking at who we are yet to be. So, in this particular presentation, the second one of the year, we are still looking back at who we were.
“Hopefully throughout the year, as we move forward with these presentations, we will begin to look at who we are, and I can’t wait to see the visions of who we are yet to be.”
