John E. Tholen

We regretfully announce the passing of John E. Tholen, age 78, surrounded by his family at his Berwick, LA residence on December 9, 2022. John had a difficult battle with pancreatic cancer, but is now at peace with Our Lord and Savior. John is survived by his loving wife, Charlene Maddix Tholen, of 57 years, his two children, Rene’ Tholen Fontenot and husband Anthony of Moss Bluff, LA, Kirk Tholen and wife Christina of Tulsa, OK, his six grandchildren, Ty Fontenot, Madison Fontenot Dyer, Abby Fontenot, Connor Tholen, Taylor Tholen and Brooke Tholen, his sister Violet Tholen Orgeron, his brother Dale Tholen and wife Judy.
John was in sales and service all of his life, professionally and personally. He was on the Water Board for the Town of Berwick, Trustee at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church for over 40 years, and a 4th degree Knight in the Patterson Knights of Columbus.
John leaves behind a legacy of family, faith, service and compassion. John never met a stranger and treated everyone like an old friend. The kindness he exhibited throughout his life in good health, ex-tended to those caring for him during his illness. Mayor John, as he was jokingly referred to, could get along with anyone and everyone, and probably sell them a car or trailer in the process. He loved Grand Isle, and if you were lucky enough to see him out in the surf, you’d have a hard time out-fishing him, or keeping track of his “ones that got away”.
He is preceded in death by his parents Erland and Iris Tholen.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in John’s memory to the St. Stephen’s Church Building Fund in Berwick, LA.

Donna Whipple Adams

Donna Whipple Adams, age 76, passed away peacefully in Houston, Texas on November 26, 2022.
Donna was born in Kosciusko, MS on November 8, 1946, daughter of Donna and Clifford Whipple. She moved to Morgan City, LA when she was 6 years old where she lived until she graduated from Central Catholic High School. Intelligent and community minded, Donna proceeded to attend Nicholls State University to study nursing. After graduation, she built a successful career as a labor and delivery nurse, which she enjoyed immensely and in which she found both meaning and purpose.
Donna is survived by her loving family, including husband of 56 years, Digby Jean Adams; daughter, Heather Adams Mann and son-in-law, Aric Mann; grandsons, David and Michael Mann of Colorado; and sister, Margaret Laurent.
Faith played an integral part in Donna’s life. As a devout Catholic, she was a dedicated member of Catholic Daughters. She taught catechism for several years and served as a member of both the vocal and bell choirs at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Berwick where she lived. Donna’s involvement in the latter reflected her life-long love of music. Her family remembers fondly the excitement she showed when given the opportunity to attend a Pavarotti concert.
Donna was widely known for her kind and loving spirit. She enjoyed nothing more than giving or receiving a good hug and spending time with her loved ones. Specifically, Donna adored playing Scrabble, winning often as she knew more words than a thesaurus. Donna’s talent for and love of language extended to her correspondence. She was known for the eloquent words that she used in cards and letters sent to family and friends and for her beautiful, albeit very small, handwriting.
Donna spent the final years of her life in Houston to be close to her daughter. She easily made friends wherever she went and was well known for her ever-present smile.
Near the end of her life, she was in the care of Buena Vida Hospice in Houston and the comfort and support provided by the staff, especially Rosita who quickly became a dear family friend, was superb. Donna was able to touch the lives of many and especially enjoyed visits from her hospice volunteer who said “she was such a special woman and happened to be the purest friendship that I never planned. I will cherish every story she shared with me.”
Donna’s life will be celebrated with a mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at 415 Union Street, Morgan City, Louisiana, 70380. Visitation begins at 10:00 am with mass following at 11:00 am.

Assumption

Sheriff Leland Falcon reported this arrest:

--Linda Jean Blanton, 58, Jefferson Place, Baton Rouge, was arrested Friday on charges of speeding in a school zone, failure to obey a police officer (signs and signals), felony battery of a police officer and aggravated battery with a dangerous weapon.

On De.c 7, P.O.S.T. -certified school resource officer was directing morning school traffic at Pierre Part Elementary. The deputy was in full uniform with reflective safety equipment and had her patrol unit properly positioned and lighted.

The deputy observed a vehicle eastbound on La. 70 at a high rate of speed in the school zone. The deputy stopped the vehicle to allow ingress and egress traffic at the school. The deputy then heard a transmission over her police radio about a vehicle driving recklessly in the Pierre Part area. The description of the suspect vehicle appeared to be similar to the vehicle she just stopped in the school zone.

The deputy made contact with the driver and then ordered her to pull off the roadway. The suspect replied, “No,” and drove off at a high rate of speed with the deputy still engaged. The deputy was able to free herself and avoid serious injury.

It was determined that the vehicle in the first complaint as well as the school zone incident and the driver were the same. The driver fled the area.

Deputies obtained arrest warrants for the driver, now identified as Blanton.

On Friday, Blanton was arrested by the Morgan City Police Department on the warrants from Assumption Parish.

Blanton was transferred to Assumption Parish on Friday evening with bond set at $50,000.
