A Celebration of Life for Willie Mae Colbert will be Saturday, March 11, 2017, 12 noon at Greater New Hope Baptist Church, 104 Tenth Street, Baldwin, LA. Rev. Emile Jolivette, Pastor, Rev. Carl F. Lewis, Officiating.
Visitation will be Saturday, March 11, 2017, from 10 a.m. until the commencement of the funeral service at Greater New Hope Baptist Church.
She will be interred in Greater New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
Willie Mae Colbert was born on July 19, 1933 to the late Nicodemus and Flora White Colbert in Ashton, La. She passed away on Feb. 24, 2017 at the age of 83.
Left to cherish her memories is one son, Kenneth Colbert, Baldwin, La.; three daughters, Cynthia Brent, Baldwin, LA; Jacqueline (Gus) Howard, Baldwin, LA; Robin Charles, Baldwin, LA, one brother Frank Colbert; Houston, TX, one sister; Ella Mae Lewis, Baton Rouge, La., one godson, Kenneth Lewis, Charenton, La.; two very dear friends, Idella Lewis, Gloria Mitchell, seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by one son, Michael Colbert, seven brothers, Louis, Cleveland, Gifford, Roland, Ira, Nicodemus, Ralph; and four sisters, Rose Mae, Lillie Mae, Ora Mae, Mildred.

HOWARD J. DOIRON

February 26, 1925 – March 7, 2017
Funeral services for Howard J. Doiron will be held Friday, March 10, 2017, at St. Jules Catholic Church during a 2p.m. Mass of Christian Burial. Following the Mass he will be laid to rest in St. Jules Church Cemetery. Father Peter Emusa will be the Celebrant for the Mass and conduct the services.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for the visitation at Ibert’s Mortuary from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Friday, with the Holy Rosary being prayed at 11:30 p.m.
Howard was born at South Bend Plantation in Bayou Sale, the sixth of seven children born to the late Adrien Doiron and the late Florence Vicknair Doiron. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp, having served during World War II in the European Theater and was a member of the VFW and American Legion. Howard worked for Texaco which he retired from after 35 years of dedicated service. He passed away at the age of 92 on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at the Franklin Health Care Center. He will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Sally D. Hebert and her husband Roy of Centerville; his son, Richard Doiron and his wife Cheryl of Franklin; five grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Selma “Sally” Snellgrove Doiron; three brothers, Cornelius “C.J.” Doiron, Clarence Doiron, and Adrien Doiron Jr.; and three sisters, Doris May, Dorothy Adams, and Iris LaJaunie.

JOSELYN MARY LANDRY HEBERT ESTEP

January 28, 1936 - March 2, 2017
Funeral services for Joselyn Mary Landry Hebert Estep were held Monday, March 6, 2017, at 12:30 p.m. at Ibert’s Mortuary in Franklin. Following the service she was laid to rest in the Franklin Cemetery. Rev. Joel Fletcher officiated the services. Serving as pallbearers were Jason Giroir, Rocky Giroir, Jay Broussard, Joel Fletcher, Steven Tabb, and Joey Landry.
Relatives and friends were invited to join the family for the visitation at Ibert’s Mortuary on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service, with the rosary being prayed at 10:30 a.m.
Joselyn was a native and lifelong resident of Franklin. She worked for the St. Mary Parish School Board for 28 years as a cafeteria technician at Crowell Elementary School and then Franklin Senior High School. Jo, as she was affectionately called, loved cooking for family and friends as well, but her true passion was her family, whom she deeply loved, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jo passed away at the age of 81 on Thursday, March 2, 2017, at her home. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her two children, Elizabeth “Liz” Hebert and David Paul Hebert and his wife Sally; six grandchildren, Jason Giroir, Rocky Giroir and his wife Rachel, Michelle Damron, Lacey Tabb and her husband Steven, Ashley Fletcher and her husband Joel, and Bethany Hebert; 14 great grandchildren, Zane, Gabriel, Rocky Jr., Rhea, Dylan, Cooper, Jayden, Braylon, Katelyn, Cierra, Carson, Joel Jr., Ashlyn, and Allie; three siblings, Marlene Rineholt, A. J. Landry, and Cynthia Duvall; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Elred “Bozo” Hebert Jr.; her second husband, Lowell “Cowboy” Estep; her parents, Joseph and Mable Pontiff Landry; two sisters, Beatrice “Bee” Bodin and Marguerite “Margie” Landry; and two sons-in-law, Ernest “Rocky” Giroir and Stanley R. Damron.

LIONEL PETER BONIN SR.

May 15, 1937 - February 28, 2017
Lionel Peter Bonin Sr., a Jeanerette native and resident of Baldwin for the past 47 years, passed away at the age of 79 on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017.
Lionel was an outdoorsman through and through and was a hardworking man who didn’t mind getting his hands dirty. Some of his favorite pastimes were fishing, hunting, going to the camp, and working in his garden. He was also quite the pool player and could often be found enjoying a good cigar. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Barbara Derouen Bonin; four children, Johnny Bonin, Linda Bonin, Gwen Bonin, and Lionel Bonin Jr.; one sister, Blanche Ann Segura; seven grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lee Ann Bonin; his parents; and several brothers and sisters.
In keeping with Lionel’s wishes, he will be cremated with private services held by the family at a later date.

Refuge friends set art workshop

The Friends of Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge, with support of the West End Branch Library in Baldwin, is hosting an “Art of Nature Watercolor Workshop” from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on March 21.
Award winning artist Darnell L. Delcambre will instruct this free watercolor basics workshop designed for adults. Delcambre enjoys watercolor painting and outdoor photography of the Acadiana area. She was received numerous awards for her photography and art in addition to her floral designs and cooking awards.
Her work was selected for the Art Showcase for the Louisiana Governor’s Mansion Exhibit. She has received recognition from Louisiana Public Broadcasting Emerging Artists Exhibition, the Lafayette Art Association, Crowley Art Association, Gardenia Society Art Show, Sugar Cane Festival Floral Design and Horticulture Show, Sugar Cane Festival Art show and was selected to participate in this year’s Shadows-on-the-Teche Plein Air Competition.
Delcambre’s still life was selected for the Southern Open at the Acadiana Arts Council in Lafayette. She currently teaches watercolor basics at A& E Gallery and has enjoyed being active on the cultural scene for the past 15 years.
Registration is required to attend the watercolor basics workshop due to limited space and supplies. To register call the library at 337-923- 6205. This event is supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, administered by the Acadiana Center for the Arts.

Art and Dance signup March 11

Registration for the Bayou Beaux Art and Dance Summer Arts Program will be March 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the city council room in City Hall.
The registration fees are $20 per course for the art portion of the program and $20 per student for the dance portion of the program. Fees are due at the time of registration and are not refundable.

Early voting for primary

Registrar of Voters, Jolene Holcombe announces early voting for the March 25 election begins Saturday, March 11 and continues through Saturday, March 18.
Hours for early voting are 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Early voting will be conducted at the Registrar’s office on the third floor of the courthouse and also at the Registrar’s branch office in Morgan City at 301 Third St. You may vote early in either office regardless of your address.
The following issues are on the ballot:

New business ribbon cut

Jim Pellegrin, owner, cut the ribbon to the Fast Tag Title & License, an Office of Motor Vehicles Public Tag Agent office Tuesday. Fast Tag Title & License is an authorized service center for the Department of Motor Vehicles. The office provides car, trailer, ATV and motorcycle titles, registrations and more. The office is located at 1803 Main St. in the Jackson-Hewitt office, and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Donald 'Rod' Rodriguez

Donald “Rod” Rodriguez, a former resident and oilfield pilot in Morgan City, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017, at the Hospice of West Alabama.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at St. Joseph Church in Centerville. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m.

He is survived by his wife, Beryl Rodriguez; stepdaughter Toni Jones; and children Cathy, Debra, Donnie and Gail.

Legislators: Small impact from cuts

Local legislators expect St. Mary Parish to escape much of the impact of cuts during the special budget session that starts Monday aimed at closing state government’s $304 million mid-year budget deficit.

Higher education and health care are two areas that legislators especially want to try to protect from further cuts.

Gov. John Bel Edwards called for the special legislative session that will end Feb. 22. State government’s fiscal year ends June 30.
