LC's Grogan earns all-conference honors

Three Louisiana College Wildcats received American Southwest Conference honors, including a Patterson High alum.
Former Patterson High standout and Louisiana College freshman Taylan Grogan earned East honorable mention honors and East All-Freshman Team honors, while senior teammate Raheem Regis earned second-team All-East Division honors and senior teammate Steve Evans netted East honorable mention honors.
Grogan averaged 13.6 points per game, second best for Louisiana College, and one of two freshmen to rank in the top 20 in scoring in the conference at season’s end. Grogan scored 300 points this season and led the team in 3-point field goals and free throws made. He was named East Division Player of the Week once after back-toback 29-point games against LeTourneau and the University of Texas at Tyler. These are Grogan’s first all-conference selections of his career.
Regis was one of the most dominant post players in the American Southwest Conference. He led the Wildcats in scoring and rebounding this season with 16.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He finished the season with 387 points and pull in 203 rebounds, the second most rebounds in a season since Louisiana College joined the American Southwest Conference in 2000. Reigs finished the season ranked 10th in the conference in scoring and tied for second in rebounding. He was one of four players to rank in the top 10 in both categories at the end of the year. Regis was named American Southwest Conference East Division Player of the Week three times during the season, one of just two players to win the award three times this year. The forward recorded nine double-doubles this season, scored in double figures in all but one game this year and missed five additional double-doubles, pulling in nine rebounds in a game.
Regis ended his Louisiana College career as one of just a handful of players to score more than 1,000 points and pull in over 500 rebounds in their career. This is Regis’ third end-of-season recognition from the American Southwest Conference. He was a member of the East All-Freshman Team in 2014 and an Honorable Mention All-Conference member last season.
Evans was riddled with injuries throughout the 2016-17 season, which forced him to miss more than half the year. In 11 games, Evans scored 137 points for a 12.5 point-per-game average and pulled in 77 rebounds, second most on the team. He averaged 7 rebounds per game. Evans ends his Louisiana College career with 791 points and 603 rebounds.
This is the second consecutive year he has received postseason honors from the American Southwest Conference. Last year, he was a member of the East Division Second Team and East All-Defensive Team.

Brown scores 41 as New Orleans clinches tournament bye

It was a festive evening at Lakefront Arena Thursday as the final home game for three seniors, the conference’s leading scorer, Randi Brown, made individual history and the University of New Orleans women’s basketball team made history by not just reaching the Southland Conference Tournament for the first time but earning the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye later this month in Katy, Texas.
The memorable night was made possible by a 102-87 drubbing of Southeastern Louisiana University (5-24 overall, 3-15 in the Southland Conference) and avenging a 15-point defeat to the Lady Lions in Hammond Feb. 11.
“We didn’t do a good job of guarding the three-point shot, but we found a way to win and at this point of the season, that’s what makes the biggest difference,” New Orleans Head Coach Keeshawn Davenport said in a news release.
Junior guard Randi Brown, a Central Catholic alum, scored 41 points. She becomes the second player in New Orleans Privateers’ history to exceed 40 points more than once, joining All American Sandra Hodge, who exceeded the 40-point mark three times.
Brown, of Houma, had a full stat sheet, grabbing six rebounds, dishing eight assists and recording four steals.
“She finished with 41, but she could have had 50,” Davenport said. “I think she’s sending a very loud message of how she’s going to do her senior season. I’m very proud of her.”
It was the final home game for seniors Ariele Davis, Raven Coleman and Jewel Angelo. Coleman had eight points and six rebounds while Angelo contributed 11 points and three assists.
“We’ve just trusted the process and believed everything that coach has told us,” Angelo said in a news release. “We’ve faced a lot of adversity since (our) freshman year, but we’ve pushed through to try to become a winning program by giving all we’ve got every single day.”
New Orleans (14-13, 9-8) had the advantage for all but 2 minutes and 26 seconds of the game. It led after one period, 23-14. The lead reached 21 points in the second quarter at the 4:32 mark when Brown canned a 3-pointer—-one of five on the night—-to make it 43-22.
However, the Lady Lions sliced into the lead with a 15-4 run before halftime and trailed 47-37 at halftime.
The Privateers ans w e r e d e v e r y Southeastern run in the third quarter. The margin reached 19 at the end of the period thanks to a 15-point stanza by Brown.
Sophomore center Shania Woods had 8 of her 18 points in the 3rd quarter.
Woods was the game’s leading rebounder with 13 for her fourth double-double this season.
Junior Kayla Mundy had 14 points off the bench on 6-of-9 shooting in 19 minutes.
New Orleans was 35-of-67 from the field for 52.2 percent. It forced 26 turnovers and scored 27 points off Southeastern miscues.
The Privateers finish with a regular season home record of 10-4, the first time the program has reached double-figure wins at home since the 2002-2003 season.
Taylin Underwood led the Lady Lions with 36 points, six rebounds and eight assists.
The Privateers will close the regular season Saturday in Thibodaux against Nicholls State. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. New Orleans will head to Katy, Texas, for the Southland Conference Tournament March 10-13. Indigent defender spokesperson asks parish council for support

16th Judicial District indigent defender spokesperson Cecelia “Beanie” Bonin approached the parish council on Wednesday in regards to her financially struggling public defender’s office.
Bonin asked that the council “support us morally and legislatively” and to confer with Louisiana legislators to direct funds to the public defender’s office in St. Mary, St. Martin and Iberia Parishes.
“I don’t know about you, but it’s pretty tough to run these three offices, to pay for attorneys who for, I want to say, work for pretty much nothing,” Bonin said of the office’s $1.7 million budget.
“Right now, we’re not at the end of the [fiscal] year,” Bonin continued. “We used up over $1.5 million.”

The adoption of the resolution will be discussed at the next parish council meeting in April.

Councilman Mathews spoke about his opportunity to attend the 2017 NACo Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. during last week. He discussed the future of St. Mary Parish with Congressman Clay Higgins. Councilman Mathews hopes “that we’re moving in the right direction that’s going to ensure healthcare benefits for the good people of Louisiana and this entire country.”
