Seatbelt check set by Chitimacha PD

Chitimacha Tribal Police will conduct a seatbelt enforcement campaign May 22 - June 4.
According to Chitimacha Police, this concentration on seatbelt and child restraint enforcement will correspond and be part of the “Click it or Ticket” campaign which is being conducted statewide by law enforcement.
If there any questions concerning seatbelt and child restraint laws on the Chitimacha Reservation, contact the police department at 337 923-4964 or refer to the Tribal Laws on the Chitimacha web-site.

LATOYA TRANYELL RUFFIN WILLIAMS

Latoya Tranyell Ruffin Williams, 33, a resident of Opelousas, La. and native of Morgan City, La. passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 3:03 p.m. at Lafayette General Medical Center.
Visitation will be observed Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church 113 Federal Avenue Morgan City, La. from 9 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m. Minister John E. Jordan will serve as the Officiant. Burial will follow funeral services in the Morgan City Cemetery.
Memories of Latoya will forever remain on the hearts of her husband, Bradford J. Williams Sr. of Opelousas, La; two sons, Damarion Ruffin of Grand Coteau, La. and Bradford J. Williams Jr. of Opelousas; her parents, Ronald Bill Sr. of Thibodaux, La. and Karen Christopher (Joseph Sr.) of Opelousas, La.; four brothers, Joseph Christopher Jr.. and Devonte Robinson of Rayne, La., Craigory Christopher of Des Moines, IA and Ronald Bill Jr.. of Thibodaux, La.; six sisters, Candice Ruffin and Shelita Francois both of Morgan City, La., Lasheldra Dyer of Marksville, La., Queen Robinson of Gibson, La., Jaila Goudy and Jalisa Bill both of Thibodaux, La.; seven cousins that were raised as brothers, seven brothers-in-laws, four sisters-in-laws and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Latoya was preceded in death by her grandmothers.

Sorrell area joins in to 'Keep St. Mary Beautiful'

Keep America Beautiful recently launched the Great American Cleanup, the nation’s largest community improvement program.
As the 2017 Great American Cleanup Day sponsor and in conjunction with Earth Day, residents of the Sorrell Community cleaned along La. 182 and the railroad track running parallel within the community. This is the first year residents from the Sorrell community have participated in the Keep St. Mary Beautiful campaign.
In recognition of this event, local parish chapter of Keep St. Mary Beautiful and Sorrell residents organized a cleanup day. Local affiliates and partnering organizations and volunteers sponsors play a key role in the success of the Great American Cleanup.
Ninety 30-gallon trash bags were collected yielding roughly 8½ tons of litter. Items collected consisted of cigarette butts, beer cans, wine bottles, plastic bags filled with used disposable pampers, abandoned toys and other debris.
Fifty-five volunteers were involved, including Louis Ratcliff and Mayor Pro-tem Jacki Ackel of the Town of Berwick; Mayor Rodney Grogan of the City of Patterson; St. Mary Parish Councilmen Gabriel Beadle and Rev. Craig A. Matthews; staff and residents from Claire House for Women and Children in Bayou Vista; Pastor Lee Condolle and congregation from One Faith Fellowship Christian Center of Patterson; Juanita Clements of St. Mary Parish 4-H, BEB/WSM JAG Program; Matt Ackel of the Port of Morgan City; Chief Clarence Clark of St. Mary Parish Fire District 11; Brady Borel of KQKI 95.3 FM; Juanita Bienvenu of the Patterson Garden Club; and other Keep St. Mary Beautiful committee members also joined in the cleanup efforts.

Central Catholic graduation will be Saturday

The Central Catholic High School Class of 2017 will have its commencement ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
The graduating class will be led by the following valedictorian and salutatorian:
Blake Byrne
Blake Byrne is CCHS Class of 2017 valedictorian. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Byrne.
Byrne was Student of the Year, executive Student Council president, and CCHS 2016 Homecoming King.
Byrne was a member of National Honor Society, an athletic letterman in football, basketball and golf, and a member of the Academic All-Composite team for football and basketball.
Byrne is a recipient of the Masonic Lodge Honesty and Integrity Award and the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux Leadership Award. He plans to attend Louisiana State University majoring in mechanical engineering.
Caroline Nini
Caroline Nini is CCHS Class of 2017 salutatorian. She is the daughter of Mark Nini and Catherine Patterson Nini.
Nini was a member of Key Club, CCHS retreat team, ARK (Acts of Random Kindness) Club and National Honor Society.
She is an athletic letterman in swimming and has represented CCHS at the district and state literary rallies for three years.
Nini is a recipient of the Masonic Lodge Honesty and Integrity Award, Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux Leadership Award, and Rotary Youth Leadership Award.
She plans to attend Louisiana State University majoring in biochemistry.

Rhonda Palmature
Rhonda Palmature, 52, a native and resident of Patterson, died Wednesday, May 17, 2017.
She is survived by her husband, Carl L. Palmature; three children, Carl J. Palmature, Kristin Palmature and Ryan Palmature; and other relatives.
Visitation will be Fri-day from 9 a.m. until services at noon at Hargrave Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest in the Morgan City Cemetery.

ELDRIGE DINGER SR.

Eldrige Dinger Sr., 97, a native of Berwick and resident of Patterson, died Tuesday, May 16, 2017.
Visitation will be Fri-day from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Bayou L’Ourse Baptist Church. Services will be Saturday from 9 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. at the church. He will be laid to rest in the Morgan City Cemetery.
He is survived by three sons, Eldrige Dinger Jr. of Independence, Marvin Dinger of Patterson and Robbie Dinger of Denver; one brother, Bernie Dinger of Berwick; three sisters, Rosie Lancon of Youngsville, Vallie Barrilleaux of Morgan City and Anita Lebouef of Houston; and a host of other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, his parents, stepmother, six brothers and his first, second and third wives.
Ibert’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CHARLENE SYKES

January 5, 1944- May 18, 2017
Charlene Sykes, a native of Oklahoma and resident of Berwick, Louisiana, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017, at the age of 73.
A loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend, Charlene adored her family and lived for them and her pet, Patches. Charlene was a dedicated employee of Walmart, where she worked in the Deli brightening coworkers’ and customers’ days with her witty charm and personality.
When not working, Charlene enjoyed spending her time fishing, cooking just about anything, and especially watching ESPN Sports. Her beautiful memory will be forever remembered and cherished in the hearts of those who knew her best.
Charlene leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Gary Wayne Sykes and his wife, Shelly, of Morgan City; three brothers, Bill Kimrey and his wife, Wanda, of Bernice, Oklahoma, David Kimrey and friend, Rosanna Snyder, of Miami, Oklahoma, and Larry Kimrey and his wife, Pat, of Miami, Oklahoma; two sisters, Shirley Felts and her husband, Richard, of Liberty, Kansas, and Linda Briggs of Wichita, Kansas; brother-in-law, Bill Smith of Ketchum, Oklahoma; her beloved niece, Charlene Patrick of Berwick; and her beloved pet, Patches.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard “Dick” Sykes; her father, Daniel Lee Kimrey; her mother, Clara Mabel Rexwinkle Kimrey; and two sisters, Clara Wilson and Dorothy Smith.
The family requests that memorial visitation be observed Monday, May 22, 2017, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a celebration of life taking place at 7 p.m. at Hargrave Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Charlene’s memory to St. Joseph Hospice, 103 Ridge Road, Thibodaux, LA.
