Bethel to collect hurricane relief supplies through Oct. 11

Organizers at Bethel Pentecostal Fellowship hope to fill a warehouse with specific items within the next week and a half to send to Puerto Rico in the aftermath of devastation left behind from Hurricane Maria.

Officials began collecting items Friday at Bethel Pentecostal’s warehouse, located at 206 Enterprise Ave. in Patterson.

People are encouraged to donate diapers, nonperishable baby formula, baby wipes, bottles and nipples, and feminine care products.

Hurricane Maria tore through Puerto Rico Sept. 20, killing at least 16 people and leaving nearly all 3.4 million people on the island without power and most without water, according to an Associated Press article.

The hours of collection are from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m.-noon Saturday. Officials plan to collect items through Oct. 11.

The Rev. Marty Harden of Bethel Pentecostal said church leaders were asked by St. Mary Parish homeland security officials to collect the items in the church’s warehouse. Items collected will eventually be put on pallets and transported to Puerto Rico.

“I think we can store as much as they can send,” Harden said.

Church members were glad to help in any way they could to provide relief to those in need in Puerto Rico, he said. Members volunteered to receive items as people drop them off.

Even in the event of rain, people will be able to drop off their donations in the warehouse, Harden said.

Though organizers haven’t collected a lot of items yet, Harden expects the donations to pick up as word gets out about what they’re doing.

Bethel also plans to send to Puerto Rico numerous boxes of school uniforms that were previously donated to the church, he said.

Metal Shark, Danos announce new contracts

Two area companies have announced that they’ve received new contracts, including Metal Shark’s deal worth up to $90 million to build the next generation of patrol boats for the U.S. Navy.

Danos Co. of Gray says it has a new contract with Shell Exploration and Production Co. to provide mechanical and automation maintenance for “production hubs and associated subsea infrastructure located in the Gulf of Mexico.

Danos said it expects to mobilize nearly 100 Louisiana-based employees for the project.

“Danos is committed to providing world-class, competitive project management services to our clients like Shell so they can continue to safely operate their Gulf of Mexico deepwater assets,” said Mark Danos, vice president of project services for Danos. “With this contract, we are providing Shell with a fully integrated team that can maximize efficiencies and share best practices across facilities.”

Under the terms of the contract, Danos will provide project management, construction, automation, fabrication and scaffolding services for Shell’s Auger and Ram Powell tension-leg platforms and the Enchilada and Salsa fixed-leg platforms. Danos will mobilize nearly 100 Louisiana-based employees for this project.

The Navy contract awarded to Metal Shark, based in Jeanerette with a dockside construction facility in Franklin, is the result of a multiyear bid process to select a replacement for protection boats with the Navy Expeditionary Combad Command’s Coastal Riverine Forces. Subject to annual appropriations, the Navy intends to replace approximately 100 to 160 of its existing 25-foot and 34-foot CRF patrol boats with the larger and more modern PB(X) platform over the next 15 years, Metal Shark said in a news release.

Metal Shark will build up to 50 PB(X) vessels for the Navy, along with trailers, spares and training packages, and technical support.

“PB(X) was one of the most challenging and most sought-after U.S. military boat procurement opportunities in recent history; the result of a years-long process pitting Metal Shark’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities against multiple leading U.S. naval architect firms and nearly all of our competitors,” said Metal Shark’s CEO Chris Allard. “The award of PB(X) to Metal Shark is the result of a tremendous team effort and I couldn’t be more proud of our people.”

The winning PB(X) design is a 40-foot, welded-aluminum pilothouse patrol boat designed by Metal Shark’s in-house engineering team, the company said in its press release.

Immediately identifiable thanks to its chiseled, angular profile and a unique faceted hull, the PB(X) is powered by twin diesel inboards and water jets. Metal Shark designed a moderate aft deadrise, wide-waterplane, sharp-entry hull form that not only achieves 35+ knot sprint speeds while displaying superb dynamic stability in a range of conditions, but also offers enhanced handling and greatly reduced operating cost at the 10-15 knot escort and cruise speeds where the vessel will spend the bulk of its operational life. The PB(X) features ballistic protection and can be armed with a range of crew-served and remotely operated weapons systems.

In order to fully optimize the hull and propose a more mature design, Metal Shark built a PBX running prototype hull, designated PB(X)-P1, which was extensively tested in a wide range of operating conditions. This test platform became the basis for Metal Shark’s resistance, powering, and weight testing, and determined the final configuration proposed to the Navy.

Big 2nd half lifts Berwick past Ascension Episcopal

Berwick erupted in the second half of Friday’s homecoming game to upend Ascension Episcopal 49-15 in front of large crowd at Geisler Stadium.
Before the game, however, Berwick sophomore Keyon Singleton took a knee during the national anthem. NFL players began to kneel or sit during The Star Spangled Banner in mass last week after President Donald Trump called for all protesting players to be fired. The protest started in 2016 when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started kneeling. Kaepernick has stated that he started kneeling to bring attention police brutality against minorities.
Many fans brought American flags to the game and sang along with the anthem.
In the fourth quarter, a verbal altercation brought police to the bleachers, and a man was asked to leave the stadium.
As for the game, Berwick (4-1) never trailed. The Panthers took the opening kickoff and marched downfield on a 12-play, 87-yard drive that was capped with a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mitchell Sanford to Josh Carver with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter. Barrett Hover added the point-after-attempt for a 7-0 Panther lead.
Ascension Episcopal (4-1) came into the game unbeaten and ranked No. 9 in last week’s Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 2A poll. The Blue Gators got on the scoreboard when quarterback Cole Simon hooked up with a wide-open Seth Kerkstetter behind the defense for a 70-yard touchdown with 1:23 left in the opening quarter. The point-after attempt failed for a 7-6 Berwick lead.
Berwick answered right away when running back Josh Jones broke free and darted 74 yards for a touchdown on the Panther’s second play from scrimmage. Hover’s kick extended the Berwick lead to 14-6 with 58 seconds left.
Ascension Episcopal stormed back again with a 39-yard scoring pass from Simon to a wide-open Mac Kelly at the 11:38 mark of the second quarter. A two-point conversion pass failed, so Berwick led Ascension Episcopal 14-12.
The Blue Gators were using picks and rubs to get receivers so open.
“We still have kids doing their own thing out there, and they know better,” Berwick Coach Eric Holden said. “We’re not communicating well, so we’re going to work on a little cardiovascular training on Monday to get their minds straight.”
Berwick got the ball at the Ascension Episcopal 48-yard line with 6:17 left in the first half.
It took the Panthers seven plays to reach the end zone when Sanford found Collin Louviere on a 23-yard scoring pass with 3:29 remaining. Hover’s kick extended Berwick’s lead to 21-12.
Ascension Episcopal added a 38-yard field goal to close half, trailing Berwick 21-15.
Berwick scored on all four second-half possessions to blow the game open.
Josh Jones had 15 carries for 202 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Panther’s rushers. Sanford carried 13 times for 97 yards, while Kenan Jones had 2 carries for 11 yards.
Sanford continued his hot play, completing 22-of-41 passes for 322 yards with four touchdowns and an interception.
His favorite targets were Kenan Jones with eight receptions for 129 yards with a touchdown and Carver with six catches for 102 yards and a score. Josh Jones added four catches 26 yards while Collin Louviere had two catches for 25 yards and a touchdown. Denver Jenkins had a catch for 28 yards and a touchdown, and Travis Whitehead rounded out the pass receivers with a catch for 12 yards.
Sanford closed the game with two fourth-quarter touchdown passes. The first score went to Kenan Jones on a 32-yard pass, and the second score went to Jenkins on a 28-yarder.
“The win tonight was great, especially considering what it was last week,” Holden said. “The offense scored a bunch of points, and I think the defense played pretty well.”
Holden, mourning the death of his grandfather, still had Newman, who handed Berwick its first loss of the season a week ago with a 37-27 defeat, on his mind.
“Ascension Episcopal is a good solid well-coached team, and I’m happy to get the win, but we should have beat Newman last week,” he said. “We just made too many mistakes to start the game and put ourselves in too big a hole to climb out of.”
Berwick’s offense totaled 632 yards in Friday’s win, 322 passing and 310 rushing.
Berwick opens District 8-3A play Friday at Erath (0-5).

Inspired Westgate holds off Patterson

The Patterson Lumberjacks went toe-to-toe for four quarters with the Westgate Tigers Friday night but couldn’t overcome the inspiration an injured player gave the home team in a 28-20 loss to Westgate for its homecoming game.
Patterson scored with 8:05 remaining on quarterback Dajon Richard’s six-yard touchdown run to pull within 21-20 and opted to go for two points and the lead, but Richard was stopped short on the conversion attempt in a collision in which Westgate senior defensive back Shannon Deal was injured.
Deal was on the ground for around 20 minutes being attended to by trainers and emergency personnel before being taken off the field on a backboard and driven off in an ambulance. Visibly shaken Westgate players were asked by Coach Ryan Antoine to put the game away for their injured teammate and responded with a 65-yard drive for a clinching touchdown.
The teams huddled at midfield after the game, arms on each others’ shoulder pads, as Antoine praised the Lumberjacks for their sportsmanship and the class they showed in kneeling respectfully as Deal was seen to.
Antoine said Saturday that Deal had sustained a hairline fracture and was at home and doing well. Though his senior season is done while the injury heals, no surgery is necessary, and Deal still has a chance to play college football, Antoine said.
After the injury, Antoine said the team didn’t want to waste the sacrifice Deal made to preserve a slim lead.
“That was tough,” Antoine said. “They were very emotional. Some guys were kind of out of it, but we had to bring them together and let them know, if we go out here and get this drive, we have a great chance to win this game. Those guys went out there and did a hell of a job.”
Patterson coach Ryan Stewart said his team was without several starters, including those at quarterback and tailback, but the Lumberjacks again showed they won’t give up despite being greatly outnumbered by the Tigers.
“Our kids fought hard,” Stewart said. “I’ve been telling people all year long, this team’s got so much fight in ‘em. They don’t ever give up, and they didn’t give up tonight here either. We were down some guys. We had about 40 guys dressed out, and they had about 115 dressed out, but our kids fight till the end. It was a real impressive battle. We just fell a little bit short.”
Antoine credited the Lumberjacks for their play.
“Hats off to Patterson,” he said. “They fought. I know they had a lot of guys that were out. Thank God they were out because we didn’t play very sound on defense, and we didn’t do a very good job of running the ball either.”
Despite having its starting tailback and quarterback out for the game, the ‘Jacks totaled 228 yards rushing, led by Richard’s 140 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries. Allen Langston added 65 yards on 22 runs, and Jaymioun Butler had 42 yards and a touchdown on six rushes.
“We ran the ball well,” Stewart said. “We had a backup running back in, Allen Langston, and he ran the ball pretty hard.”
Antoine said Richard was a challenge for his defense.
“We just had to corral him and try to make some plays,” Antoine said. “We got through with the win. It was tough, and I’m happy for our guys for that.”
The Tigers improved to 4-1 with their fourth straight win while Patterson fell to 2-3.
Westgate primarily used big passing plays to score after the running game struggled and starting tailback Tyreese Jackson was forced to sit out the second half with an injury. Quarterback Darien Charles completed only three passes in 13 attempts, but all three went for touchdowns of 20-plus yards. His lone interception came on what was effectively a punt, a fourth-and-13 heave that was picked off by Kam’ron Nicholas at the Patterson 3-yard line late in the third quarter. Nicholas, a sophomore, was in for a starting corner who missed the game, Stewart said.
Sophomore receiver Kayshon Boutte caught a 24-yard touchdown pass over the shoulder in stride with 3:37 remaining in the first quarter, giving Westgate a 7-0 lead following the point-after by Connor Scott.
Patterson answered with an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive to knot the score. Butler carried twice for 35 yards, including a 20-yard run up the middle before cutting left to find the end zone with 11:54 remaining in the half.
A high snap on a Patterson punt with under a minute remaining in the second period opened the door for Westgate to take the lead at intermission. The 19-yard loss that resulted from the high snap gave the Tigers possession at the Patterson 22, and Charles connected with Keith Lopez for a touchdown on the first snap after Westgate took over.
Westgate made it 21-7 to start the third quarter with a 57-yard scoring drive after the second half kickoff. Boutte snagged a throw from Charles for a 42-yard touchdown despite being double covered, and Scott’s point-after-attempt made it a two-touchdown lead.
Patterson again proved its mettle by answering that score. Richard had runs of 11, 21, 11 and 14 yards on an eight-play, 66-yard drive, the last run reaching the end zone with Bryce Daigle tacking on the point after to make it 21-14.
Deondre Diggs recovered a Westgate fumble at the Westgate 34 just a few plays into the fourth quarter to give Patterson a chance to pull even. It took the Lumberjacks six plays to reach the end zone, with Richard carrying on five of those, including a six-yard run for a touchdown. Patterson’s Kiama Jones also had a fumble recovery.
Richard’s carry to the left on Patterson’s attempt for 2 led to the fateful collision with Deal that helped Westgate maintain its 21-20 lead and eventually earn the win.
On the ensuing Westgate drive, Jansen Mayea punched it in on a fullback dive from the 1 with 4:22 left in the game.
Dontre’ Antoine recovered a fumble on Patterson’s next possession, and after a Westgate punt with 1:30 remaining, Westgate gave up a little yardage but no points on the final Patterson possession.
Boutte finished with two catches for 66 yards, both for touchdowns, and rushed four times for 39 yards, tops on the team. Jackson had 36 yards on nine first-half carries, Dequan Dejean had 33 yards on nine second-half runs and Ja’Tyrin Allen had three carries for 22 yards, two of those runs on the game-clinching drive after Deal’s injury.
“One of Shannon’s best friends, Ja’Tyrin Allen, got into the game at running back,” Antoine said. “He had tears and said, ‘Coach, put me in, I won’t go down.’ And he came in there and played his tail off, and also had a real good block on one of the runs as well.”
Patterson opens District 8-3A play at home this week against North Vermilion.
“We continue to get better,” Stewart said. “We had a little hiccup last week, but this team keeps getting better and better and better and better, so hopefully we’re going to be ready to roll in district.”
