LINDA MARIE SINITIERE FREDERICK

November 13, 1948 - January 22, 2018
Memorial services will be held Sunday, January 28, 2018, at 5 p.m. at Ibert’s Mortuary in Franklin for Linda Marie Sinitiere Frederick, a native and resident of Franklin who passed away at the age of 69 on Monday, January 22, 2018 at Louisiana Extended Care Hospital of Lafayette. Father Lloyd Benoit will conduct the service. A gathering of family and friends will begin at 2:30 p.m. and continue until time of service.
Mrs. Linda was born on November 13, 1948, the third of six children born to the late Arthur “A. C.” Sinitiere and the late Josephine “Phene” Pusateri Sinitiere, She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed going on vacation cruises with her family. Many will remember her from her many years working for her sister at Landry’s Hot Tamales in Franklin, where she greeted everyone with a smile and a cheerful hello.
She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by her husband of 49 years, Terril J. Frederick; her children, Kevin Frederick and his wife Nitaya and Denise M. Frederick and her companion Rene Blanchard; six siblings, Arthur C. Sinitiere Jr. and his wife Lorraine, Anthony Sinitiere and his wife Yolande, Theresa “Teesie” Landry and her husband Jeffery, Tammy Boudreaux and her husband Manly, Mark Sinitiere and his wife Anne, and Kiley Sinitiere and his wife Susan; four grandchildren, Ashlee Frederick, Trey Alfano, Lanie Alfano, and Kennan Stelly; one great grandson, Dexter Alfano; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

BETTY JANE DESORMEAUX SONNIER

November 14, 1958 - January 23, 2018
Funeral services will be held for Betty Jane Desormeaux Sonnier on Monday, January 29, 2018, at the Church of the Assumption in Franklin during a 12 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial, with Father Lloyd Benoit as Celebrant. Following the Mass, she will be laid to rest in the Perpetual Park Cemetery in Franklin. A gathering of family and friends will begin at 9 a.m. at the church and continue until Mass time. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Sonnier Jr., Daniel Sonnier, Jake Bonvillain, Jacob Steiner, Eric Gorman, Derrick Sonnier, and Dennis Sonnier Jr.
Betty was born on November 14, 1958 to the late Dalton Desormeaux Sr. and the late Clara Thibodeaux Desormeaux and passed away at her home on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at the age of 59. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. A woman of strong faith in the Lord, Betty was a devout Catholic and a member of the Church of the Assumption. Some of her favorite pastimes were sewing, arts and crafts, playing the organ, and especially making others laugh. She had the ability to leave the days struggles and worries behind and lived her journey through this world one day at a time.
Those she leaves to cherish her memory include her husband of 42 years, Michael H. Sonnier Sr., four children, Michelle S. Pitre and her husband Quinon, Michael H. Sonnier Jr. and his wife Megan, Rebekah S. Bonvillain and her husband Jake, and Daniel M. Sonnier; 12 grandchildren, Brennan Chapman, Brayden Chapman, Brant Chapman, Emma Pitre, Jesse Sonnier, Lucas Sonnier, Braxton Chapman, Lilly Sonnier, Lexie Sonnier, Sagelee Meyers, Alyssa Pitre, and Jules Sonnier; two sisters, Beverly D. Peltier and her husband Karl and Barbara D. Gorman and her husband Mike; one brother, Dalton Desormeaux Jr.; father-in-law, Irving Sonnier; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Elva Jane Desormeaux Sonnier.

Police Reports 1-25-18

Franklin Police Chief Sabria McGuire reported the following arrests:
Lunden Toussaint, 18, of Fifth Street, Franklin, was arrested Monday at 8:28 p.m. on a warrant for the charge of armed robbery. Toussaint was additionally charged with resisting an officer, possession of Schedule I narcotic marijuana with the intent to distribute, and introduction of contraband into a penal institution.
Officers located Toussaint and knew of a warrant for his arrest. Upon making contact with Toussaint, he allegedly ran from officers. During booking, officers could allegedly smell a heavy odor of illegal narcotics coming from Toussaint’s person and located the narcotics. Toussaint was booked, processed, and held on a $105,000 bond.
Michelle Damron, 36, of Cedar Street, Franklin, was arrested Wednesday at 1:29 p.m. on the charge of domestic abuse battery. Damron was booked, processed, and held on a $2,500 bond.
Travis Walters, 34, of Eleventh Street, Franklin, was arrested Wednesday at 5:03 p.m. on the charge of obscenity in a public library. Walters was booked, processed, and held with no bond set at the time of press release.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Scott Anslum reported the following arrests:
Donna Reed, 46, of 1900 Saturn Road, Bayou Vista, was arrested Tuesday at 9:23 a.m. on warrants for failure to appear on the charge of possession of clonazepam with intent to distribute, failure to appear on the charge of disturbing the peace interfering with lawful occupation, failure to appear on charges of hit and run driving, operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license, following too closely, operating a motor vehicle not covered by security and failure to carry registration certificate, failure to appear on charges of operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license and operating a vehicle with an expired license plate and failure to appear on charges of operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license, operating a vehicle without proof of insurance, possession of open alcoholic beverages in motor vehicles, speeding, improper lane usage and improper use of license plate.
A deputy went to Reed’s residence in an effort to locate her on the warrants. The deputy observed Reed leaving the residence in a vehicle and stopped the SUV. Reed was subsequently transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. Reed was released on a $14,000 bond.
Brett Sanders, 27, of 428 Lagonda Road, Bayou Vista, was arrested Tuesday at 3:55 p.m. on charges of improper lane usage, general speed law violation, obstruction of justice and possession of Schedule I marijuana.
A narcotics detective patrolling the Patterson and Bayou Vista area observed a vehicle speeding 65 miles per hour in a posted 55 miles per hour zone on US 90. The detective also observed the vehicle cross over the fog line of the roadway. The detective conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver as Sanders. While speaking with Sanders, the detective developed information that illegal narcotics were inside the vehicle. The detective contacted the St. Mary Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit to assist in the investigation. K-9 Buddy indicated the presence of illegal drugs inside the vehicle. During a search of the truck, detectives located two partially burnt marijuana cigars. Detectives also found evidence that Sanders discarded marijuana during the traffic stop. Sanders was transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. No bail is set.
Juvenile male, 14, of Centerville, was arrested Tuesday at 1:08 p.m. on charges of ungovernable juvenile, curfew violation, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and no driver’s license.
Deputies investigated a call for service regarding an ungovernable juvenile. Deputies found that the juvenile drove a vehicle from a residence, without permission from his guardian. Following the investigation, the juvenile was released to a guardian pending juvenile court proceedings.
Homer Lalonde, 41, of 324 Clarke Road, Bayou Vista, was arrested Thursday at 11:41 p.m. on charges of proper head lights required and operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license.
A deputy patrolling Bayou Vista observed a vehicle with green fog lights and conducted a traffic stop on Southeast Blvd. The deputy identified the driver as Lalonde and found that he was driving the vehicle with a suspended license. Lalonde was released on a summons.
Marvin Verret, 74, of 312 Camile Drive, Patterson, was arrested Thursday at 5:05 a.m. on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of theft of crab traps. A deputy investigating vehicle crash on Kathleen Street in Patterson identified one of the driver’s as Verret and located the active warrant for his arrest. Verret was released on a summons.
Van Clay, 38, of 11411 Old Jeanerette Road, Jeanerette, was arrested Wednesday at 8:42 p.m. on a warrant for failure to appear on charges of careless operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, hit and run driving and flight from an officer.
During booking at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center, a correctional deputy located the active warrant for Clay’s arrest. Clay was released on a $2,500.

Parish council hears from Chez Hope, new public works director

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and Chez Hope is planning vigils in St. Mary Parish.
Tammy Rogers, representing Chez Hope at Wednesday’s meeting of the St. Mary Parish Council, said there will be a vigil Feb. 1 at Franklin Senior High School’s parking lot near the flag pole at 6 p.m.
Another is set for the Bayou Vista Community Center, Feb. 5 at 6:30 p.m.
“We’re involving high school students in the program,” Roger said, “to either just speak to the audience, some will read a poem or sing a song.”
Rogers said there is a teen dating violence problem in the area, and the programs are designed to raise awareness.
Rogers also said Chez Hope has been in the schools educating 1,565 students with a “Hands Are Not For Hitting” presentation, 2,017 in the bullying-free presentation, and 257 in teen dating violence. Those initiatives are continuing.
Noting that there have been 11 school shootings already in 2018, she said, “We have to get into the schools, we have to make an impact with these kids.” During the Christmas holidays, 18 families were adopted by locals to provide holiday support.
In other business, St. Mary Parish President David Hanagriff introduced Jean Paul Bourg, the new parish public works director.
Bourg worked for the City of Morgan City for six years in public works and mosquito control.

—The Platform Men’s Club in Amelia was granted a residency variance for a full liquor permit.
—Granderson Hamilton was reappointed and Annie K. Boyd was appointed to the St. Joseph Recreation Park Advisory Committee; Theresa S. Trosclair was appointed to both Mosquito Control Dist. 1 and Sewerage Dist. 11 boards; Roland Verrett and Donald Patureau were reappointed to the Water and Sewer Commission No. 1 boards; Tony Hensens Jr. was reappointed to the Water and Sewer Commission No. 2 board; and Camille J. Punch and Herbert Bell were reappointed to the Water and Sewer Commission 4 board.
—An agenda item that read “Councilman Beadle letter to the St. Mary Parish Council” was pulled without explanation.

Franklin police act on tips from residents; seek suspect

Franklin Police Chief Sabria Mcguire reported that a citizen shared information with a victim of a burglary, as did the victim, and passed that information to police Tuesday night.
At approximately 6 p.m. Tuesday, the FPD received information in reference to residences in the areas of Seventh Street, Sixth Street and Ninth Street which possibly contained stolen property from burglaries, hidden within.
Upon officer’s arrival to the addresses, the residences were searched, and officers located stolen property.
Continuous investigations by detectives revealed several burglary suspects, and charges are pending on completion of investigation efforts.
FPD urges the public that if you or someone you know is missing any of the items in the photos, call the Franklin Police Department Detectives Division at 337-828-1716.
The FPD is also asking for assistance in locating Terrance McClain. McClain is wanted for illegal possession of stolen things. If anyone has any information on the whereabouts of Terrance McClain, contact the Franklin Police Department Detectives Division at 337-828-1716.

Chitimacha police nab 3 on illegal narcotics warrants

Chitimacha Police Chief Hal Hutchinson reported Wednesday that during the course of a narcotics investigation, it was learned that two homes on Chitimacha Trail had illegal narcotics in them.
Search warrants were executed at both residences.
During Tuesday’s execution of the search warrants, methamphetamine, tramadol, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were located in the homes.
Dustin Broussard, 29, of Chitimacha Trail, Charenton, was arrested Tuesday on charges of possession of Schedule II methamphetamine, possession of Schedule IV tramadol and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was transported to the parish jail.
Brandy Martin, 43, of Chitimacha Trail, Charenton, was arrested Tuesday on charges of possession of Schedule II methamphetamine, possession of Schedule IV tramadol, possession of drug paraphernalia and a fugitive warrant with St Mary Parish. She was transported to the parish jail.
Kevin Hebert, 25, of Chitimacha Trail, Charenton, was arrested Tuesday on charges of unlawful distribution with intent to distribute Schedule I marijuana, unlawful distribution, and 10 counts of sale of drug paraphernalia. He was transported to the parish jail.
The investigation is ongoing and is expected to lead to further arrests in the near future. Chitimacha Tribal Police ask for anyone with information on this, or any other crime, to contact the Police Department at (337) 923-4964. Patterson police investigating burglaries

Patterson police are asking for the public's help in two burglary investigations.

Police responded to a report of a burglary Friday night at GameDay Pizza on U.S. 90.

"It was broken into and a substantial amount of money taken," Police Chief Patrick LaSalle said Wednesday.

On Tuesday night, another burglary occurred, this time at Bonnie's Bouquets and Bakery on Church Street, LaSalle said. Some pastries were stolen from the business, he said.

Both incidents are still under investigation, and no suspects have been identified, LaSalle said.

Patterson tops Abbeville to remain perfect in district

Morgan City defeats Dunham in OT

The Patterson Lumberjacks remained perfect in District 8-3A action with a 44-33 win against Abbeville Tuesday.
While Patterson trailed 9-7 after a quarter, the Lumberjacks outscored Abbeville 10-5 in the second period for a 17-14 halftime lead. Patterson extended its lead to 32-26 after three quarters.
Reginald Talver led Patterson with 12 points, while Tyrone Tillman also reached double figures with 10. Other Patterson scorers were Kai Schexnayder, six; Drew Lucas, five; Dajon Richard, four; and Kamiah Jones, three.
Patterson will return to action Thursday when it meets North Vermilion in league play. Boys’ action is set to begin at approximately 6:30 p.m.
CCHS defeats
South Terrebonne
Central Catholic knocked off Class 4A South Terrebonne 76-67 in nondistrict action in Morgan City Tuesday.
The Eagles led 23-13 after a quarter, while South Terrebonne cut its deficit to 33-30 at halftime. Central Catholic rebounded in the third quarter, outscoring South Terrebonne 21-11 for a 54-41 lead heading to the fourth period.
Brooks Thomas led four Eagles in double figures with 24 points. Other Central Catholic scorers were D.J. Lewis, 17; Elijah Swan, 14; Davidyione Bias, 11; Taylor Blanchard, eight; and Michael-Anthony Hill, two.
Friday, Central Catholic defeated Centerville 49-45 in Morgan City in nondistrict action.
Central Catholic led 13-10 after a period of play, 26-20 at halftime and 38-35 after three quarters.
Thomas led Central Catholic with 18 points, while Swan also reached double figures with 15. Other Central Catholic scorers were Lewis, nine; Blanchard, four; and Bias, three.
Central Catholic (8-11) will return to action Wednesday when it travels to face St. John in nondistrict action.
Morgan City
defeats Dunham
Morgan City defeated Dunham, the No. 2-ranked school in the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division III power rankings, 61-59 in overtime in Baton Rouge Tuesday.
Kerwin Francois nailed the game-winning three-pointer with 1.5 seconds remaining, and following a Dunham timeout, Ke’Sean Francois intercepted a pass by Dunham that went the length of the court to preserve the win.
At one point in the game, Morgan City, Class 4A’s No. 9 ranked team, trailed by 16. The Tigers forced 19 turnovers, including 12 in the second half.
Jared Singleton led Morgan City with 22 points. Other Morgan City scorers were Kerwin Francois, 15; Tywaun Walker, eight; Ke’Sean Francois, seven; Taaj Daniels, five; and Devonte Grogan, four.
Morgan City (17-4) will return to action Friday when it travels to meet Centerville. Junior varsity is set for a 5:30 p.m. start with varsity to follow.
Berwick falls to
David Thibodaux
The Berwick Panthers fell in Lafayette to David Thibodaux 56-49 in overtime Tuesday in District 8-3A play.
With the game tied at 41 after regulation, David Thibodaux outscored Berwick 15-8 in the overtime period for the win.
Early on, Berwick trailed 10-7 after a period of play but cut its deficit to 21-20 at halftime. The teams were tied at 27 after three quarters.
Josh Carver led Berwick with 16 points, while Tavaris Howard added 10. Other Berwick scorers were Patrick Robertson, nine; Donald Tillman, six; Travis Whitehead, five; and Dayton Clark, three.
Berwick (8-12, 2-3) will return to action Friday when it continues district play at Patterson.
