Two suspects arrested in fatal Jeanerette Mardi Gras shooting

A 22-year-old Baldwin man was captured Thursday on warrants for principal to murder warrant and principal to attempted murder for the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Scott Anslum said in a news release. Another man wanted in the case turned himself in Friday, the Iberia sheriff said.
Thaddeus Gabriel, 22, of Rosebud Street in Baldwin, was arrested at 7:21 p.m. Thursday as a principal to the crimes. Dandre Gabriel, 24, who was wanted on charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder, came in the next day.
They were wanted in connection with Sunday’s shootings at a Jeanerette Mardi Gras parade.
One victim died at an area hospital, and another man was wounded.
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office assisted the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office in locating Thaddeus Gabriel. Gabriel came to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office in reference to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office investigation and was subsequently arrested on the active warrant, Anslum said.
Thaddeus Gabriel was transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. No bail is set.
Kantrell Gabriel, 20, of Jeanerette, wanted as a principal to both crimes, remains at large.
The investigation continues to look into whether anyone else was involved.

Man arrested on marijuana charge, cyberstalking warrant

A 33-year-old Morgan City man was caught Thursday with marijuana believed to be destined for illegal sales and also booked on warrant accusing him of threatening someone on Facebook, Morgan City Police Chief James Blair said in a news release.

—Wilbert Harrison, 33, of La. 182 in Morgan City, was arrested at 9:05 p.m. Thursday on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia and on a warrant charging him with cyberstalking

—Heather M. Rentrop, 28, of La. 182 in Morgan City, was arrested at 9:05 p.m. Thursday on a charge of possession of marijuana.

Narcotics division detectives responded to a home in the area of La. 182 in regard to Harrison have an active arrest warrant, Blair said.

While at the home, investigators encountered Harrison and Rentrop. Harrison and Rentrop were in possession of suspected marijuana, Blair said.

Police found evidence that the marijuana that Harrison possessed was destined to be sold in illicit sales, Blair said. The warrants for Harrison stem from a Jan. 24 investigation when police learned that Harrison allegedly threatened a victim via Facebook, Blair said. The investigation continued and warrants were prepared for Harrison’s arrest. Harrison and Rentrop were jailed.

Blair reported that officers responded to 39 calls and reported the following arrests:

—Brittany N. Crouch, 31, of Fifth Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 9:37 a.m. Thursday on a charge of contempt of court. Crouch was located and arrested in the area of Duke Street on city court warrants. Crouch was jailed.

—Jerri L. Champine-Dufren, 34, of Bush Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 1:54 p.m. Thursday on warrants charging her with two counts of failure to appear for drug court and failure to appear to pay a fine.

Champine-Dufren was located and arrested in the area of La. 182 on warrants for city court and 16th Judicial District Court. Champine-Dufren was jailed.

—Sarah A. Crouch, 28, of Sixth Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 3:40 p.m. Thursday on a warrant charging her with simple battery.

Crouch was located and arrested at the police department. The warrant stems from a Nov. 17, 2017, investigation when police learned that Crouch allegedly struck the victim, Blair said. Crouch fled the scene prior to officer arrival therefore warrants were prepared for her arrest. Crouch was jailed.

—Anthony J. Martin, 34, of Barrow Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 4:55 p.m. Thursday on a charge of possession of marijuana and a warrant charging him with failure to appear for a contempt of court hearing.

Narcotics division investigators observed a vehicle being operated in area of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in an erratic manner.

A stop was initiated, and Martin was identified as an occupant of the vehicle. Martin was in possession of suspected marijuana, Blair said. Martin was also had an active arrest warrant through 16th Judicial District Court. Martin was jailed.

—Jeremiah C. Arabie, 39, of Ditch Avenue in Morgan City, was arrested at 12:34 a.m. Friday on charges of DWI second offense and improper lane usage.

Patrol officers observed a vehicle being operated in the area of Greenwood Street swerving from lane to lane. A stop was initiated, and Arabie was identified as the driver, Blair said.

Arabie was in an intoxicated state and performed poorly on a field sobriety test, Blair said. Arabie registered 0.12 gram-percent blood alcohol content on a chemical test, Blair said.

Records indicate that Arabie had a prior DWI offense, Blair said. Arabie was jailed.

—Lisa E. Boudreaux, 53, of Sixth Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 6:41 a.m. Friday on a warrant charging her with failure to appear for arraignment. Boudreaux was located and arrested in the area of La. 182 on city court warrants. Boudreaux was jailed.

Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrest:

—Destiny Dinger, 29, of Franklin Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 9 p.m. Thursday on charges of stop sign violation and driving under suspension. Dinger posted $1,250 bail.

Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrest:

—Quincy D. Jones, 29, of Wilson Street in Jeanerette, was arrested at 6:23 p.m. Thursday on a charge of illegal possession of stolen things. No bail was set yet.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Scott Anslum reported that deputies responded to 39 complaints in the parish and reported no arrests in east St. Mary Parish.

Superintendent gets good marks on evaluation

CENTERVILLE — The bulk of Thursday’s St. Mary Parish School Board meeting was consumed by a closed-door session. When board members emerged after 52 minutes, Superintendent Leonard Armato got a good report card. Armato received what board President Michael Taylor called “a very good rating” during the superintendent’s annual evaluation. “The main item the board uses to evaluate the superintendent is school performance scores,” Taylor said after the meeting. “Our school performance scores are excellent.” Armato is nearing the end of the third year since he was named to succeed Donald Aguillard, who left the St. Mary superintendent post to lead Lafayette Parish ...

Edwards tax session decision expected Friday

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana lawmakers will learn Friday if they are returning to the state Capitol after the Mardi Gras holiday to debate replacing $1 billion in expiring taxes, to avoid deep budget cuts. Gov. John Bel Edwards said he’d need to call a special session by Friday so lawmakers have enough time to debate taxes before the regular session begins in mid-March, when next year’s budget is crafted. GASTON JOSEPH GROS

September 15, 1940 — February 7, 2018
Gaston Joseph Gros, 77, a resident of Morgan City, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018, at the hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Gaston was born Sept. 15, 1940, in Thibodaux, the son of Leo Paul Gros and Zilda Thibodaux Gros.
Gaston was a family man; he loved spending time with his grandchildren. As much as he loved his family, his love for animals was the same. Gaston also enjoyed singing karaoke, fishing, gardening, and going to the casino.
Gaston will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his companion of 5 years, Catherine Boudin of Morgan City; three sons, Ronald “Ronnie” Crochet Jr. and wife Patricia of Gray, Joseph Crochet and wife Roberta of Morgan City, and Earnest J. Crochet and wife Olanda of Point-Aux-Chen; three daughters, Linda Romero and husband Scott of Amelia, Annette Daigle of Berwick, and Eva Guillotte and husband Michael Jr. of Bayou Vista; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gaston was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Zilda Gros; wife, Justillia Boudoin Gros; one daughter, Kathleen Crochet; one son, Rickey Crochet; and one grandson, Zachary Crochet.
Services will be held Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, at 7 p.m. at Twin City Funeral Home with Pastor Brian Head officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until the time of services.

JUNE BROWN JACKSON

June Brown Jackson, 76, a native of New Orleans, died Jan. 30, 2018, in Baton Rouge.
She is survived by two sons, Otis Petite Jr. and Ronald Jackson Jr.; and one grandson.
She was preceded in death by two husbands.
Visitation is today from 5 p.m. until services at 7 p.m. at Greater Morning Star Baptist Church in Baton Rouge.
Burial will be Saturday, 10-11 a.m., at the church followed by a Repast.

Morgan City High School tennis season has begun

Morgan City High School’s tennis teams met E.D. White on the court Friday in Morgan City. In girls’ action, each team won three matches, while on the boys’ side, E.D. White won 4-1. MCRD accepting T-Ball, baseball and softball sign-ups

The Morgan City Recreation Department is accepting registration for T-Ball, baseball and softball. Youth baseball is open to players, ages 7-12 and T-Ball to ages 5-6. Baseball players who are or will be seven years old by May 1st but won’t be older than 11 years old by May 1st also can participate, while those who are age 5 before May 1st may compete in T-Ball.
