VIRGIE BILLIOT GRAY

February 11, 1932- June 27, 2018
Virgie Billiot Gray, 86, a lifelong resident of Morgan City, Louisiana, went home to her Heavenly Father on June 27, 2018, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Virgie was born February 11, 1932 “down the bayou in a lily patch” as she always referred when asked where she was born. She was proud to be “a Houma Indian” (from the United Houma Nation Tribe) and was known for her cooking. She kept stock piles of everyone’s favorite dishes in her freezer and with 15 minutes notice she would have your favorite meal hot and ready for you when you walked in the door. She loved her family and kept a large collection of photos of her loved ones.
Virgie is survived by her daughters, Pat and favorite son-in-law, August Arnould, of Greenwell Springs, Debbie Kovac of Baton Rouge, Janice Gray of Morgan City, and Robbie Gray of Prairieville. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Patrick and wife, Daphne Arnould of Prairieville, Tracy Landry of Honolulu, Hawaii, Landon Landry of Nashville, Tennessee, Jeremy Kovac of Raceland, and Morgan Lynn Gray of Prairieville; eight great-grandchildren; and siblings, Adam Billiot, Rose Dinger and Barbara Ida Crouch. She was known as Maw Maw by many others.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew Gray Jr.; her son, Alton Joseph Landry; parents, Batran and Sadie Billiot; and siblings, Anita Dinger and Robert, Aubrey and Sadie Louise Billiot.
Visitation will be held at Twin City Funeral Home in Morgan City with a viewing on Saturday, July 7, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and funeral service at 2:00 p.m. The burial will immediately following the service in the Morgan City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association (donatenow.heart.org), Diabetes Association (donations.diabetes.org) or Pancreatic Cancer Research (mdanderson.org/donors-volunteers).

VERNA LEE VINING LaCOSTE

February 12, 1933 -July 2, 2018
Verna Lee Vining LaCoste, 85, a resident of Berwick, passed away Monday, July 2, 2018, at Teche Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.
Verna Lee was born February 12, 1933, in Berwick, the daughter of Vernie Adam Vining and Edith Theriot Vining.
Verna Lee’s door was always open to company, especially for 2:00 p.m. coffee. She loved having her children and grandchildren over for sleepovers and enjoyed cooking for everyone. Verna Lee also loved to be outdoors tending to her flowers.
Verna Lee will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by six children, Jared LaCoste Sr. and wife Sherry of Centerville, Charles LaCoste and wife Leslie of Patterson, Veronica Scully and husband John of Broussard, David LaCoste Sr. of Patterson, Nancy Bain and husband Roy of Walling, Tennessee, and Melinda Mahfouz and husband Joseph of Centerville; one brother, Floyd Vining Sr. of Morgan City; one sister, Patricia Dianne Knowles and husband Russell of Thibodaux; 13 grandchildren, Melissa Ganaway, Jared LaCoste Jr., Dalton LaCoste, Cassandra LaCoste, David LaCoste Jr., Nicholas LaCoste, Priscilla Lockhart, Dean LaCoste, Jenna Posten, Phillip Posten Jr., Sonia Farnsworth, John Scully and Jada Scully; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Verna Lee was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Parker LaCoste; parents, Vernie and Edith Vining; one sister, Vida Mae Venable; and two great-grandchildren, Joseph Anthony Ganaway and Brianna Elise Farnsworth.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 6, 2018, at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Berwick. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Twin City Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. and will continue Friday, July 6, 2018 at Twin City Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. dismissal. After Mass, Verna Lee will be laid to rest in Berwick Cemetery Mausoleum.

UNA 'CHUTE' CANTY

Una “Chute” Canty, 83, a resident of Berwick, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2018, at Morgan City Health Care Center.
Una was born on November 5, 1934, in Berwick, the daughter of Mitchell and Eunice Fabre Bruney.
She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by three children, Gwendolyn Tellman and husband Doug, and Shawn Canty and wife Tammy, both of Berwick, and Bannon Canty; six grandchildren, Vivian Gill and husband Michael of Ponchatoula, Sean Canty of Morgan City, Nicholas Canty and wife Carley of Belle River, Seth Canty, Tarrin Canty and Glynn Guidry Jr., all of Berwick; and three great-grandchildren, Lillyian Guidry, Angelique Guidry and Payton Guidry.
Una was preceded in death by her parents, Mitchell and Eunice Fabre Bruney; her husband, George E. Canty Jr.; one son, George E. Canty III; and three sisters, Poony, Chuny and Teet Teet.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 6, 2018, at Twin City Funeral Home with Monsignor J. Douglas Courville officiating. A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the services; and following services, Una will be laid to rest in the Berwick Cemetery.

Bessie Clement

Bessie Clement, 79, a resident of Port Allen, formerly of Patterson, died Saturday, June 23, 2018, at Legacy Nursing Facility in Port Allen.
She is survived by four sisters, Margaret Noah of Thibodaux, Janise Moses of Houston, Rochelle Graham of Dallas and Cheryl Hebert of Arlington, Texas; two brothers, Kernan Hollie of Thibodaux and Keith Hollie of Fort Worth, Texas; and a host of other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial service was held June 30 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Thibodaux.
Landry’s Funeral Home of Thibodaux was in charge of arrangements.

George W. Griffin Jr.

August 26, 1952-June 28, 2018
George W. Griffin Jr., 65, a resident of Morgan City, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2018, at his home.
George was born on August 26, 1952, in Winnfield, Louisiana, the son of G.W. Griffin Sr. and Pauline Griffin.
George loved being in the outdoors spending his time hunting and fishing. His love of the outdoors lead him to his long career as a boat captain. He loved his family and loved each minute that he got to spend with them.
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by three sisters, Bobbie Sue Smith of Houma, Susan Nelson and husband Mike of Morgan City, and Paula Kyle and husband Larry of Morgan City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, G.W. Griffin Sr. and Pauline Griffin; his wife, Mary Griffin; one sister, Cynthia Griffin Davis; and one nephew, James David Nelson.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2018, at Twin City Funeral Home with a memorial visitation being held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the services. Following the services, an inurnment will take place in the Berwick Cemetery Mausoleum.

Jerry Marie Levy

July 29, 1937 - June 29, 2018
Our beloved mother, Jerry Marie Levy, was united with our Lord on Friday, June 29, 2018, in Austin, Texas.
Jerry was born to Arthur and Melba Levy of Berwick, Louisiana, on July 29, 1937. She was a graduate of Morgan City High School and the University of Southwestern Louisiana. She lived in Morgan City most of her life and also spent time in Missouri and Texas. She spent the last years of her life living near her children in Austin, Texas. Jerry was a loving and giving person who lived her life for her children. She had a love for travel and spent much time in Italy and driving around the U.S. in her motor coach with her travel buddy/sister-in-law Sandra Russo. Jerry loved to cook, spend time outdoors, and was a fantastic gardener. She cherished life and was in constant contact with all her loved ones.
Jerry was preceded in death by her parents.
Jerry is survived by her children, Kirk Price and his wife Cindy, Paty Price, Phillip Price, Amy Hart, and Joel Price and his wife Carolyn, and her nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; grandchildren, Alex Price and his wife Erin, Clay, Nick, Jacob and Joshua Price from Austin, Texas and James, Madison, Ashton and Thomas Hart from Columbus Ohio; and great-grandchildren, Warren and Jane Price from Austin, Texas. She is also survived by her two brothers, Arty Levy and Don Levy; and her sister, Glyn Levy Dupont.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4, at Twin City Funeral Home in Morgan City, Louisiana. Jerry’s celebration of life will be held on Thursday, July 5, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morgan City, with a visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. and Mass beginning at 10:30 a.m., followed by interment in the Morgan City Cemetery.

Patterson 10U All-Stars place fourth at state tournament

The Patterson 10U All-Stars finished 3-2 at the Cal Ripken State Tournament in Kentwood this weekend, good enough for a fourth place finish.
While Patterson fell to Madisonville 15-3 in its opener Thursday, the squad won three straight games against Kenner (16-13), West Feliciana (10-9) and Bayou BR (13-10).
However, Patterson was eliminated from the tournament Sunday when it fell to Terrebonne 29-5.
Against Madisonville, Patterson fell behind 15-0 after three innings before scoring its three runs in the top of the fourth. The game was called after the top of the fourth.
Linzy Howard led Patterson with a 2-for-2 performance with a double, an RBI and a run.
Other top Patterson offensive contributors were William Whitten, 1-for-1 with a double; Hayden Ribardi, 1-for-1; and Chance Rochel, an RBI.
Caleb Jennings suffered the loss. In two innings, he surrendered two unearned runs on two hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Against Kenner, Patterson prevailed in the high-scoring, back-and-forth contest.
After falling behind 3-0 after an inning and 5-3 after two complete, Patterson took a 7-6 lead after three innings before Kenner tied the game at nine after four innings.
Patterson scored seven runs in the top of the fifth inning, while holding Kenner to four runs in the bottom of the frame for the win.
Brody Newton led Patterson with a 3-for-4 performance with a double, a triple, three RBIs and three runs.
Other top Patterson offensive contributors were Steve Swisher, 2-for-4, a double, two RBIs, two stolen bases and three runs; Jeremy Allemond, 2-for-2, a double and two runs; Javyn Christopher, 1-for-3, a triple and a run; Rochel, 1-for-1, a double, an RBI and a run; Whitten, 2-for-4, two RBIs; Zeph Brinlee., 2-for-3, a stolen base and two runs; Howard, 1-for-2, a run; Jennings, 1-for-3, two runs; and Jackson Gierman and Ribardi, each an RBI
Newton earned the win. In 1.1 innings, he surrendered six runs (five earned) on two hits with four walks, one hit batter and fanned three.
Swisher earned the save. In 0.2 innings, he surrendered one unearned run on one hit with one strikeout.
LaCoste started the game for Patterson and received a no-decision.
In a back-and-forth game against West Feliciana, Patterson with three runs in the top of the sixth for the win.
Trailing 9-7 after five innings, Patterson scored three runs in the top of the sixth and held West Feliciana off the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame for the win.
Early on, West Feliciana led 4-3 after an inning and extended its lead to 6-3 after three complete before Patterson rallied for a 7-6 lead after the top of the fourth.
West Feliciana scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth for an 8-6 lead and added another run in the bottom of the fifth for a 9-6 advantage.
Whitten led Patterson with a 2-for-2 performance with three RBIs and a run.
Other top Patterson offensive contributors were Gierman, 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run; Brinlee, 1-for-2, an RBI and a run; Howard, 1-for-2, two RBIs; Jennings, 1-for-4, two RBIs; Newton, 1-for-3, two runs; Swisher, 1-for-3, two stolen bases and a run; and LaCoste, 1-for-3, a run.

Patterson scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend its lead to 13-9, while it held Bayou BR to one run in the top of the sixth to clinch the win.
Brinlee and Whitten led Patterson’s offense. Brinlee finished 4-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs, while Whitten was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.
Other top Patterson offensive contributors were Swisher, 2-for-3 with three RBIs, two stolen bases and three runs; Newton, 3-for-4, a double and three runs; Christopher, 1-for-2, two RBIs; Jennings, 1-for-4, an RBI and a run; Allemond, 1-for-2, a run; and Howard, an RBI.

Morgan City 10-year-old All-Stars win district title

The Morgan City 10-year-old All-Stars won the District 3 AAA Tournament in Morgan City Sunday after finishing with a 3-0 mark. Morgan City defeated Franklin, Thibodaux and St. Mary Central in the three-day event by a combined score of 50-11. Friday, Morgan City defeated Franklin 17-7, while Saturday, Morgan City topped Thibodaux 17-2. Sunday, Morgan City defeated St. Mary Central 16-2. In Friday’s win, Jamyre Bias led Morgan City’s offense with a 2-for-4 performance with five RBIs.
