Baldwin to apply for grant on water system issues

Baldwin’s aldermen passed a resolution Wednesday evening to apply for a capital outlay grant for funds to be used in drilling wells and connecting lines for the town’s water system.
This came on the heels of a visit earlier in the meeting from State Rep. Sam Jones, who reminded the board that the deadline for the grant application is Nov. 1, saying, “If we shoot for the sun, we might land on the moon. We will do our best.” to which, he added that most of the communities in the area came into existence around a water system, and that without a water system in place, the town might have a tough time staying afloat.
Alderman Donald Grimm spoke to a separate concern he had of trash cans being picked up by the town’s garbage service provider, Pelican Waste and Debris, and those trash cans not being returned to the curb; but instead, being kept, in effect disappearing, seemingly stolen.
Grimm was informed by Interim Town Clerk Tammy Richard that the bins were in fact being taken, but because the trash collection bill at the residence had not been paid and were being cut-off from service.
Grimm voiced displeasure at such a seeming betrayal of common courtesy on the part of the town, but was reminded shortly thereafter that such consequences of failure to pay garbage collection bills had previously fallen on the town to pay, rather than the citizenry; and that the town had voted, since realizing the monetary burden of such actions, to refer the consequences of non-payment to the residences in offense, which numbered 135, and Richards said only five called to complain.
Jennifer Lanceslin spoke on behalf of St. Mary Parish Red Ribbon Committee, calling attention to the 30th anniversary of the celebration of Red Ribbon Week, to take place parish-wide from Oct. 19-28.
Gloria Lawson of the Baldwin Beautification Club received permission from the board to hold a bucket drive on Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. to raise funds for town beautification efforts, and she encouraged citizens interested in becoming members of the BBC to attend one of the meetings which take place on the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Baldwin Community Center.
In new business, Ohyge Little was named the town’s full-time firefighter, following a recommendation by Baldwin Fire Chief Lance Mire.
Mire also noted before leaving the podium that the town’s scheduled hydrant testing had been delayed until next week, to begin on Oct. 16.
Halloween trick or treat hours were approved for Oct. 31, to run from 6-8 p.m.
It was also approved to replace the fire system in the town’s community center, having recently been “red-tagged” by the Louisiana State Fire Marshall’s Office, for replacement.
The board decided to pay Concept Electric for the new system priced at $2,987.
In other business, the as-yet unresolved issue of the town’s requiring worker’s compensation insurance for town employees was promised further review, as Brown Insurance Agency is be working on a more affordable quote than had previously been proffered from two other companies set to the task.
Community announcements included:
—A community day is set to take place Nov. 3 at the basketball courts across the street from the police station in town. The event is free, and the focus will be the repainting and re-striping of the courts. Parents are encouraged to bring their kids to the park for the event.
—Brittany’s Project announced they will hold a bonfire on Oct. 27 at their location off La. 187 in Franklin, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Billed as “an evening of fun with the family,” Brittany’s Project is asking anyone with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to feel free to attend.
—Baldwin’s Halloween Trunk or Treat will take place Oct. 31 from 6-8 p.m. at 808 Main Street, sponsored by the Baldwin Police Department. Fun, games and a costume contest will be afoot.
—Baldwin’s National Night Out will take place Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. at Baldwin Elementary, sponsored by the Baldwin Police Department. Interested parties are asked to come and bring their kids to interact with law enforcement personnel, and have some chili-Fritos.

Patterson will host Abbeville for homecoming Friday

Patterson continues to ‘self-destruct’ in games, but with a District 8-3A win against Abbeville this Friday, Patterson Coach Don Jones says the Lumberjacks’ goals are still ahead of team.
Patterson (1-5, 0-1) had three turnovers — including two in the first quarter — that helped North Vermilion jump out to 28-7 lead en route to a 52-28 victory.
“We, once again, self-destructed, physically, got beat on the offensive (and) defensive lines, Jones said after last week’s game.
“Of course, when you lose, everybody’s got an answer for it, but it’s not the X’s and O’s,” Jones added. “I can promise you. It’s not the scheme. It’s all about senior leadership. It’s all about physicality.”
Patterson had 386 yards of offense (204 rushing and 182 passing), while North Vermilion had 363 total yards (291 rushing and 72 passing).
North Vermilion standout Malik Criner led the Patriots with 34 carries for 205 yards and four touchdowns.
Patterson standout Dajon Richard led the ‘Jacks’ with 117 yards rushing and two scores and 94 yards receiving yards and a touchdown. He has carried 103 times for 901 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, while the senior has 16 receptions for 214 yards and two scores.
James Butler had seven carries for 60 yards Friday, and the senior has rushed 44 times for 242 yards this year.
Junior quarterback Randy Paul completed 9-of-18 passes for 182 yards last week and has completed 38-of-72 passes for 492 yards with three touchdowns and five interceptions this year.
“We can’t win with all the turnovers and mental mistakes we’ve had,” Jones. “But we’re never gonna give up, and with the homecoming excitement, I think we will dig deep. With a win Friday, our goals, which are a district title and making the playoffs, are still there for us.”
Abbeville (2-4 overall, 0-1 in district) fell 42-30 to Kaplan in its district opener a week ago.
“They’re 3-yards and a cloud of smoke,” Jones said. “They run the Wing-T like Kaplan, and it’s pretty much ground and pound and they will throw an occasional play-action pass.”
Kick off is 7 p.m. at the Sugar Dome.

CCHS to travel to Vandebilt Catholic for nondistrict contest

Central Catholic will take a couple of steps up in classification this week when the Class 1A school travels to face Class 4A Vandebilt Catholic in Houma Friday. The Eagles bounced back a week ago with a 48-0 victory against Highland Baptist after being dominated the week prior by Lafayette Christian. Meanwhile, Vandebilt Catholic enters Friday’s contest 4-2, having won three straight games. The latest victory for the Terriers was a 34-0 District 7-4A win at Ellender a week ago. Not only is Friday’s game a chance to see a nondistrict foe, but Central Catholic Coach Tommy Minton said there are a lot ...

Berwick to host top-10 Kaplan squad Friday

Berwick was shorthanded in last week’s surprising 36-14 District 8-3A loss to then winless Erath.
The Panthers were without one the area’s best players, running back Josh Jones. Jones tested his injured ankle before the game and couldn’t go. Jones leads the Tri-City area with 926 yards on 110 carries and 13 touchdowns. He averages 154.3 yards rushing per game.
“With him on the field, I think it’s a completely different game,” first-year Berwick Coach Mike Walker said after the game. “We have the mentality of ‘Next man up’. Unfortunately, (Erath) made plays, and we didn’t.”
Berwick (2-4) hasn’t updated Jones’ status for this week’s second district game against Kaplan.
But Berwick’s offensive line has had trouble protecting standout quarterback Mitchell Sanford all season.
The Panthers got two late scores from Sanford late in last week’s game. He raced 29 yards for the team’s first score with 4:53 remaining in the game. He added a 58-yard touchdown pass to Keyon Singleton with 1:03 left in the game.
Sanford has completed 63 of 120 passes for 868 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions this season. He is also a rushing threat, carrying 48 times for 248 yards and three scores.
Barrett Hover leads the Panther’s receivers with 27 catches for 427 yards and four touchdowns while Singleton has eight receptions for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Hunter Landry also has grabbed 11 balls for 116 yards.
Kaplan (3-3, 1-0), ranked No. 5 in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 3A poll, defeated Abbeville 42-30 a week ago.
Drake Abshire leads the Pirates’ wing T offense this season with 75 carries for 705 yards and five touchdowns, while Braylon Romero has carried the ball 102 times for 460 yards and five scores.
Through the air, Mason Frick has completed 8 of 17 passes for 140 yards.
Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at Geisler Stadium in Berwick.
