Sheriff: Deputies stop inmate from escaping jail

An inmate at St. Mary Parish jail attempted to escape Saturday, but deputies were able to stop him, Sheriff Blaise Smith said in a news release.

The escape occurred at 5:06 p.m. Saturday at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center in Centerville. The inmate, Anthony Jones, 41, of Cleveland Avenue in Patterson, was charged with attempted escape and simple criminal damage to property following the incident.

A corrections deputy observed Jones cause damage to a light fixture in his cell, the sheriff said. Jones was placed in another room and subsequently attempted to escape from that room. Jones’ attempt was not successful and deputies kept him in custody, Smith said. Acadian Ambulance was called to give medical attention to Jones and after being medically cleared.

“Because of the quick response of jail personnel and patrol deputies, the attempt was stopped almost immediately,” Smith said.

Jones has been incarcerated at the jail since Sept. 20, 2018, on a charge of first-degree robbery in reference to a robbery that occurred Aug. 31, 2018, at a business in Bayou Vista.

Alderman Herbert Bell was appointed Mayor Pro Tempore, Tammy Richard was appointed town clerk and Fire Chief Lance Mire was appointed civil defense director.
Mayor Abel Prejean set the meeting dates for 2019 and authorized the signors of town checks after the swearing in ceremonies and appointments had been made.
He suggested the streamlining of committee meetings by holding them all together on the first Wednesday of every month, and arranged for public comments to be handled by signing-in for the purpose before meetings begin.
He recommended former Baldwin Mayor Donna Lanceslin to represent Baldwin at the West St. Mary Parish Port Harbor and Terminal District and it was announced that the town entered into a cooperative endeavor agreement with the St. Mary Levee District to proceed with right-of-way concessions at the project at Bayou Choupique.
Ruth Black was appointed treasurer, Joseph Tabb was appointed town attorney and mayor’s court judge and Denette Trahan was appointed mayor's court clerk.

Opposition to road renaming turns fiery

A fiery confrontation between some residents of Cypremort Road, the family of former St. Mary Parish Police Juror and Parish Councilman Joseph Tooney Davis and the parish council itself played out Wednesday.
In November, an ordinance was adopted rename Cypremort Road in the Four Corners area to Joseph “Tooney” Davis Drive and Sorrell Road to Bosco Road. The late Davis was a long-serving member of the St. Mary Parish Police Jury and Parish Council; Bosco was a long-time businessman in the area.
But some residents said the move took them by surprise as they were not notified of the change until they saw it on new street signs.
An ordinance by Councilman Paul Naquin was up for adoption to rescind a portion of the original renaming action, from Big Four Corners Road to La. 83.
More than 20 people addressed the council on the matter in a two-hour public hearing before the council’s regular meeting began. A much larger crowd was on hand regarding the controversy.
Proponents pointed to the many accomplishments Davis brought to the area during his long career in public service; opponents said not only would changes to documents, bills, etc. would be a hardship, but they were not notified of the change and were not aware of it until new signage was installed.
Naquin explained that he and Councilman Craig Mathews about the change and revising the actual area that would bear Davis’ name.
He introduced the ordinance to amend the original in light of that, and “some of these people don’t want to change the name…I agree with them, it’ll be a disadvantage to do all (the official changes in personal documents.)”
Mathews took responsibility for not adequately making sure the residents in the area were notified. “By no stretch of the imagination did I or anybody else up here anticipate this type of fallout,” he said. “It was not maliciously, it was not done to offend anyone, or to draw a negative reaction from our community.”
He said he was sure no one would challenge Davis’ accomplishments from the west end of the parish to the state level.
The amendment to the original ordinance does not take into consideration all residents because it “does not fairly represent all of the constituents that live on that stretch of road,” Mathews said.
There were suggestions from the attendants that the new overpass at US 90 could be named in honor of Davis, as well as renaming the West St. Mary Civic Center, where there is already a partial facility bearing the councilman’s name.
Others said there have already been issues with mail delivery.
Trent Davis, the late councilman’s son, said shortening the named section is “an insult.” He said, “My dad worked for everybody. He worked for the blacks, he worked for the whites, he worked for the Hispanics. Everybody benefited from what he did…the people who are opposing this are benefiting because of him, they have running water in their houses, they don’t have septic tanks and outhouses anymore.
“I want to see the whole street named after him, and if it can’t as you decided, men who are supposed to have integrity, remove his name totally.”
The issue of lack of notifications was also discussed, with council members vowing to do better in similar cases.
There was also a discussion about requesting the recreation district board that oversees the West St. Mary Civic Center to consider naming the facility in honor of Davis.
“That is something that can be done,” Mathews said, noting that the council cannot make that decision, the board must.
During the regular meeting, Naquin’s ordinance to rename a portion of the road passed 8-2 with one absent. He had also presented an ordinance that would require road name change requests costs to be the responsibility of those requesting the change, but tabled it for further consideration.
Later in the meeting, Councilman J Ina requested an expansion of the agenda, which was approved, and moved to send a request to Recreation Dist. 5 to consider renaming the civic center.
Also Wednesday, the council elected Councilman Gabriel Beadle as chairman and Kevin Voisin as vice-chairman.

MCHS Lady Tigers enduring tough soccer season

It’s been a tough year for the Morgan City Lady Tiger soccer team. The squad (1-15-2 overall, 0-3 in district) won its season opener against South Lafourche 6-0 but hasn’t reached the win column since. Of the Lady Tigers’ losses, though, three have been by one goal. Morgan City also has tied two games, most recently a 1-1 draw at Runnels in nondistrict action Thursday. Morgan City has not been plagued by youth this season, Coach Trevor Patterson said. It’s simply that they are behind other teams because they don’t play soccer year-round in organized leagues like players from other teams do.

UPDATED: 7 priests with local ties named in abuse list

Updated with more information on allegations

Seven former priests who once served in the Tri-City area, including six who served at Morgan City’s Holy Cross Catholic Church, were targets of “credible allegations” of sexual misconduct, according to a list released Friday by the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux.
The seventh priest served at Amelia's Thanh Gia.
At least four of the priests were accused of either soliciting a minor or improper sexual conduct with minors, in one case with a 9-year-old, according to the bishopaccountability.org website, which tracks allegations of abuse by priests. There was no indication in the letter or on the website about where the allegations originated.
Four of the priests with local ties "admitted, were convicted or pled guilty" to sexual misconduct, the letter said. Another was the target of civil litigation. Two more were the subject allegations the diocese characterized as credible.
In a letter accompanying Friday’s press release, Bishop Shelton Fabre said none of the accused men continue to function as a priest.
“I want to apologize for the egregious sins that have taken place,” Fabre wrote. “Let me be clear: the abuse of a child by anyone is sinful, abhorrent and evil, particularly when perpetrated by one vested with the sacred trust of God’s children. Furthermore, any attempt to cover up these sins is even more disturbing. I apologize to all who have been harmed. It is with deep respect and profound reverence that I humbly extend this apology.”
Pope Francis has urged ranking Catholic clergymen to admit past crimes and attempts to cover up sex crimes.
The Houma-Thibodaux Diocese extends west to the Atchafalaya River. Berwick, Patterson and other communities west of the Atchafalaya are in the Lafayette Diocese and were not part of Friday’s letter.
“Be assured that no priest in current active ministry in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux is on this list,” Fabre wrote. “I encourage you to visit our website: htdiocese.org/lightinthedarkness. On this webpage, you will also find the full text of my Pastoral Letter and other resources regarding this issue, including videos for adults, parents and youth.”
The priests who admitted or were convicted of misconduct are:
—Lawrence Cavell, who admitted to solicitation of a minor, served at Holy Cross in Morgan City, Sacred Heart in Montegut, Saint Francis de Sales in Houma, Saint Genevieve in Thibodaux, and Saint Mary in Raceland. He was ordained in 1989 and his priestly faculties — his ability to function as a priest — were removed by the diocese.
From the bishopaccountability.org website:
“Removed 3/03 after allegations arose that he solicited a minor for sex in late 1980s, prior to his ordination. Cavell, who had just gone on health leave from St. Mary’s Nativity Church when the allegations arose, admitted to the single offense. Diocese said incident involved ‘words, not acts.’ Cavell was said to be considering leaving the priesthood. No further information found.”
—Alexander Francisco, who admitted to inappropriate physical contact with a minor, served at Holy Cross in Morgan City, Saint Bernadette in Houma, Saint Bridget in Schriever, Saint Joseph in Thibodaux, and Saint Thomas Aquinas in Thibodaux. He was ordained in 1979 and his priestly faculties were removed by the diocese.
bishopaccountability.org:
“Came to the diocese from the Philippines in 1991. Placed on leave 7/02 from St. Bernadette Church for a single offense of improper touching of an older teenager which occurred ‘a number of years ago.’ The victim and parents told the Bishop at some point and requested that Francisco get psychological treatment. This was provided and Francisco was cleared to return to work by a review committee. No other offenses. Not reported to police. May have requested laicized.”
—Dale Guidry, who pleaded guilty to online solicitation of a minor and was accused of molesting a minor, served at Holy Cross in Morgan City and St. Joseph in Galliano. He was ordained in 1982, and had his priestly faculties taken away by the diocese. He died Oct, 20, 2013.
bishopaccountability.org:
“Ordained in Houma-Thibodaux LA Diocese. On leave several years, then resurfaced in Honolulu HI parishes. Later assigned to Amarillo TX. Removed Guidry from ministry in 1999; bishop would not give reason. Arrested in Montgomery County,TX 7/30/09, charged with two counts of Online Solicitation of a Minor. Pled guilty to both counts and was sentenced 7/15/10 to 5 yrs in prison. Died 10/20/13 in Stockton TX.”
—Patrick Kujawa, who pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography, served at Holy Cross and Saint Francis de Sales in Houma. He was ordained in 1996 and had his priestly faculties removed by the diocese. He is currently incarcerated.
bishopaccountability.org:
“Sent for treatment after housekeeper found 220 pornographic photos in rectory 12/99. Arrested 1/00 and charged with 62 counts of downloading child porn. Pleaded guilty 12/00; received 10 yr probated sentence. Arrested again 2/04 after more porn found at Benedictine monastery where he was living. Received mandatory 10 yr prison sentence 4/04. Received add’l 10 yr sentence 9/04 for violating original probation.”
In addition to those priests, others named were the targets of credible allegations serious and unacceptable conduct with minors, ranging from inappropriate physical contact of a minor to molestation of a minor:
—Dac Nguyen, a priest of the Society of Domus Dei ordained in 1988, who served at Thanh Gia in Amelia. The diocese removed his priestly faculties.
—Daniel Poche, ordained in 1978, who served at Holy Cross, Sacred Heart in Cut Off, Saint Bernadette in Houma, Saint Francis de Sales in Houma, Saint Hilary in Mathews, and Saint Joseph in Chauvin. The diocese removed his priestly faculties.
Another priest who was the target of civil litigation was on the list:
—Etienne LeBlanc, ordained in 1971, served at Annunziata in Houma, Holy Cross in Morgan City, Holy Family in Dulac, Saint Eloi inTheriot, Sacred Heart in Cut Off, Saint Hilary in Mathews, and Saint Thomas Aquinas in Thibodaux. The diocese removed his priestly faculties.
bishopaccountability.org:
“Placed on leave 8/07 from assignment at Annunziata Church in Houma after accusation of improper sexual activity with a 9 yr old boy. Worked at Holy Cross in Morgan City at the time. The accuser is now 26. LeBlanc denied allegations; sent for counseling1986-1987. Plaintiff filed civil suit 2007 & made a criminal complaint. In 7/11, court ordered Diocese to turn investigative rpt re LeBlanc over to Plaintiff. Diocese objects. Other victims known. Documents to remain sealed as of 8/11. Case settled 10/12.”
The diocese also wrote: “If you have reasonable cause to suspect that a child is being or has been abused by anyone, please first contact the civil authorities by calling the Louisiana Child Abuse Hotline at 855-452-5437. If you suspect that the abuser is a priest, deacon or member of church personnel, after calling civil authorities please also call Sister Carmelita. You may also call the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux Outreach Line at 985.873.0026.”

CENTERVILLE — The newly sworn St. Mary Parish School Board, including three new members, got to work Thursday on their first big job of the term: finding a new superintendent. On Thursday, the board voted to begin the search for superintendent candidates. The position, which requires supervision of the district’s 21 schools serving 8,611 students, will be advertised as having a starting annual salary of $120,000-$140,000. Armato said Thursday that his starting pay was ...
