Historic JFK terminal gets new life as luxury hotel

NEW YORK (AP) — The famous winged TWA terminal at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport came out of its decades-long retirement Wednesday with a new life as a luxury hotel.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo was on hand for a ribbon cutting ceremony opening the $268 million project.
He said he remembers seeing the terminal as a Queens boy “and saying, ‘Wow! Wow! It was ahead of its time and it was New York’s vision and creativity and boldness, and outside of the box thinking that made New York, New York.’”
The Finnish architect Eero Saarinen didn’t have a hotel in mind when he designed the futuristic structure that opened in 1962.
Those were the heady jet-age days of the first space flights and President John F. Kennedy’s promise of a moon landing.
Developer Tyler Morse hopes the proximity to the tarmac will draw travelers who don’t want to fight nightmarish city traffic to catch their flights.
Beyond today’s practical concerns lies a half-century-old dream.
“This TWA Flight Center was built as a cathedral to aviation,” Morse said.
The history of TWA and its era will be on display in the 200,000-square-foot curving lobby that has no right angles, like the rest of the building, and is in TWA’s red and white colors.
Hotel rooms are in an attached building.
The 512 rooms, starting at about $250 a night, have thick, noise-dampening windows near JFK’s Terminal 5 in view of planes taking off. The Beatles arrived at the TWA terminal in 1965 to a frenzied crowd.
The hotel has six restaurants, including one operated by celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. One of its eight bars is housed inside a vintage TWA aircraft Morse said was once purchased and used by South American drug dealers.
The hotel also features a 10,000 square-foot observation deck with a pool.
Kennedy is catching up with other international flight hubs that have hotels. Right now, most New York options are either a few budget accommodations in a neighborhood by the airport, or a very long train or cab ride into the city center.
New York’s aging airport, which is itself undergoing a $13 billion renovation, was home to TWA until the airline went out of business in 2001 and was absorbed by American Airlines.
A lone TWA sign still marks its winged, white former terminal that remains a bold, elegant example of mid-20th century design.

Guests glued to cellphones can wear out their welcome

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I live in a nice home in the desert Southwest with an in-ground pool and guesthouse. Our friends and relatives from back east have an open invitation to visit whenever they please. We enjoyed these visits until recently. The problem is their ever-present compulsion to be connected to an electronic device. We are not yet retired, but in the past we didn’t mind taking a few days off work to spend time with folks who came all the way out here to spend a few days with us. But it seems like nowadays our guests ...

Two face murder charges after man's body found in Morgan City

Warrants have been issued for two suspects in connection with the shooting death of Kirby Courteaux Jr., 53, of Montegut, whose body was found Wednesday evening in Morgan City.

Authorities found Courteaux’s body in the area of Levee Road and Veterans Boulevard. His body was recovered with the assistance of the Morgan City Police Department.

A Thursday autopsy revealed Courteaux suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the shooting, Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said in a news release. Investigators say Courteaux was likely shot near a boat launch in Pointe-Aux-Chenes in Lafourche Parish.

On Thursday afternoon, second-degree murder warrants were issued for Terance Dupre, 22, and Davonte Mathews, 21, both of Montegut, in Courteaux’s death, Webre said. Dupre is in custody but was hospitalized Thursday before being booked on charges. As of Thursday night, authorities were still seeking Mathews, Webre said. Bail for each suspect was set at $1 million.

On Tuesday, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office began the investigation as Courteaux was reported missing. He had not been seen since Saturday. On Wednesday morning, Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies and detectives spotted the victim’s vehicle traveling on Island Road in Montegut and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver sped away at a high rate of speed and eventually abandoned the vehicle in a wooded area along La. 665. He was apprehended and identified as Dupre. Terrebonne’s investigation led them to determine Courteaux was likely killed near a boat launch located on La. 665 in Pointe-Aux-Chenes in Lafourche Parish, the release stated.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives responded and discovered the crime scene near the boat launch, and bullet casings and other evidence were processed at the scene.

Meanwhile, Lafourche detectives began questioning Dupre in reference to Courteaux’s death. Through investigation, detectives learned Mathews, Dupre and Courteaux were at the boat launch Saturday night when Courteaux was allegedly shot. Mathews and Dupre took Courteaux’s body and his truck. They then transported his body to Morgan City and left him near a wooded area.

During questioning on Thursday, Dupre was transported to a local hospital for treatment on an unrelated matter. Upon release from the hospital, he will be booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex in Thibodaux on the warrant.

Anyone with information on Mathews’ whereabouts is asked to submit a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers Bayou Region by phone at 1-800-743-7433 or online at www.crimestoppersbr.org. Tips can also be submitted using the P3 Tips app on your mobile device. Tipsters could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 in cash if the information leads to an arrest.

Detectives learned Dupre knew the victim, but they have yet to determine Mathews’ relationship to the victim or a motive in the shooting, Webre said. The investigation is continuing.

President praises LNG export growth in Louisiana

HACKBERRY — In a 45-minute speech, President Donald Trump had good things to say about Louisiana, the oil and gas industry, and the people of the state.
“He was awesome,” said Cindy Brookshire after the president spoke. “He is the right president for Louisiana.”
On Tuesday President Trump toured Sempra Energy’s Cameron Liquefied Natural Gas Export Facility in Hackberry, located south of Sulphur.
“We’re now relying on American energy, and American workers never like before,” the president said. “The energy we produce here is better, cheaper and cleaner.
“I’ve never seen anything like this in my life,” he said. ”This is incredible.
“Most of all, I want to congratulate Louisiana and the workers.”
Trump said when the $10 billion facility is fully operational, it will produce 15 million tons of liquefied natural gas a year, enough to meet 25 percent of the European Union’s needs in 2018. Currently, only one of the three structures where the LNG is processed is operational.
“Today we celebrate the amazing workers at Sempra LNG,” Trump said. “From right here in Hackberry, Louisiana, you are bringing clean, natural gas to countries all over the globe. The skilled and talented 7,000 workers here at this facility are helping lead the American energy revolution.”
The plant process involves cooling gas vapor to a liquid state.Â
Liquefied natural gas is natural gas that has been condensed to a liquid state at minus-260 degrees Fahrenheit. Its reduced volume makes it easier to transport.
The liquid gas will be loaded onto large ships and then transported to Europe.
Trump said an increase in liquefied natural gas exports as boosting jobs and cementing the U.S. role as an energy provider for international markets.
Trump said: “What does it mean? It means jobs, jobs, jobs.”
The Cameron Parish site at one time created 11,000 construction jobs as the build-out continues, then hundreds of permanent jobs once it is completed.
What got the biggest roar from the president was his announcement that if he is elected president in 2020, Louisiana will also win.
“We’re giving you a brand new I-10 Calcasieu bridge starting the day after the election,” said Trump. It’s a very unsafe bridge, many problems, and we’re going to give you a new one. They’ve been trying to do it for a long time, so we’re going to start planning and development right away, and we’ll have it all set to go, day one, right after the election.”
The I-10 bridge was constructed in 1952. Travel & Leisure Magazine called the bridge Ameerica’s seventh most dangerous bridge in 2017.
