Officials: No issues for medical facilities in storm

Tri-City area medical facilities fared well during Tropical Storm Barry, and all the residents and patients at those facilities stayed safe, officials said.

Patterson Healthcare Center posted on its Facebook page that the center was asked to evacuate Friday due to the impending storm. Employees evacuated residents to facilities in Shreveport and Minden and returned safely to Patterson on Tuesday, according to posts on the Facebook page. Patterson Healthcare Center is one of 39 facilities operated by affiliates of Nexion Health.

The center evacuated 77 residents, 26 employees and 21 family members to Patterson Healthcare’s sister Nexion facilities.
"Both Pierremont Healthcare Center and Meadowview Healthcare Center were equipped and ready to provide a safe haven and consistent level of quality care to our residents," Patterson Healthcare said in a statement.

Center officials expressed gratitude for the “overwhelming support” from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, local fire departments, National Guard, regional ambulance companies and community volunteers who assisted with the evacuation efforts.

Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City got through the tropical storm smoothly and didn’t even lose power, spokeswoman Sabrina Williams said. Therefore, officials didn’t have to use backup generators.

The emergency room stayed busy as normal during the storm. Staff members spent the night Friday at the hospital to make sure they wouldn’t have to travel during inclement weather, Williams said.

Morgan City Health Care Center used generator power during the storm, “and other than that, overall we did well,” said Tam Jones, medical records supervisor. Maison Jardin Senior Living Community in Morgan City went to partial generator power, and didn’t have any issues arise, Executive Director Danette Ellis said.

Bayou Vista mosquito pool positive for St. Louis encephalitis

St. Mary Parish Government Mosquito Control, through its surveillance program, received a positive mosquito pool for St. Louis encephalitis Friday in the Bayou Vista area, a news release stated.

St. Louis encephalitis is an arbovirus that is transmitted by mosquitoes in nature among birds the same way West Nile virus is transmitted. The primary mosquito vector is the Culex quinquefasciatus and the primary vertebrate host is the house sparrow. SLE is commonly found in urban areas, the release said.

This mosquito pool was collected from one of the gravid trap collections in the Bayou Vista area, so in response to this a spray truck will run three consecutive nights in Bayou Vista. The mosquito control crew will also be out doing additional larviciding in areas where water is holding in Bayou Vista, the release stated.

St. Mary Parish Government Mosquito Control officials remind the public about the following mosquito bite prevention tips:
—Use insect repellent – the higher percentages of active ingredient provide longer protection.
—Wear light-colored clothing with long pants and long sleeves.
—Eliminate standing water – Once a week, empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or throw out items that hold water, such as tires, buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpots or trash containers.
—Properly dispose of old tires.
—Keep roof gutters clean.
—Mosquito-proof your home – use screens on windows and doors. Repair holes in screens to keep mosquitoes outside.

Statewide burn ban lifted

State Fire Marshal H. “Butch” Browning, in conjunction with Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, are rescinding the statewide burn ban put in place during the state’s recent tropical weather emergency. The lifting of the order was effective at noon Tuesday, a news release stated.

Local governments, however, still maintain the authority to order their own burn bans if conditions in their areas warrant it.

“We appreciate the public’s cooperation with this effort to minimize preventable fire-related incidents from overburdening our first responder community as they worked to address the multitude of emergencies brought upon communities across the state from tropical system Barry,” said Browning.
