Dysautonomia Awareness Month

Carmen Gonzales was a guest at the St. Mary Parish Council meeting Wednesday for a proclamation declaring October as Dysautonomia Awareness Month. Gonzales, a victim of the disease, described her years-long efforts to find a diagnosis and struggle with the condition. She is seeking similar proclamations in every Louisiana parish, with those who have done so shown in blue on the map she made while struggling with recovery from the incurable condition. Dysautonomia refers to a wide range of conditions that affect the autonomic nervous system. Symptoms include fainting, cardiovascular issues, and breathing problems. It is linked to conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and diabetes. Dysautonomias come in many forms, but they all involve the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for maintaining a constant internal temperature, regulating breathing patterns, keeping blood pressure steady, and moderating the heart rate, among other symptoms.

Big 2nd half lifts South Terrebonne past Berwick

A big second half by the South Terrebonne Gators lifted them to a 53-28 victory against the Berwick Panthers Friday in Berwick.
While Berwick led 21-20 at halftime, South Terrebonne outscored the local squad 33-7 in the second half.
During the third quarter, South Terrebonne took the lead on its opening drive, which was capped by Brandon Breaux’s 2-yard run with 5:30 remaining for a 26-21 lead.
The Gators got the ball back quickly after a key play in the third quarter as a bad snap on Berwick’s second offensive play of the ensuing drive was recovered by South Terrebonne.
Five plays later, Breaux scored his second touchdown of the night on a 4-yard run with 2:36 remaining in the period. Shea Pitre, who was 5-for-7 on extra-point attempts, made the point after to extend the Gators’ lead to 33-21.
The Gators added another touchdown in the third period on Peyton Parr’s punt return with 1:09 remaining to extend the lead to 40-21.
After Berwick (1-1) scored its lone second-half touchdown on a Keyon Singleton 39-yard run with 11:24 remaining in the game, South Terrebonne followed with two touchdowns as Chelete scored on a 39-yard run with 8:50 remaining, and Christian Arceneaux reached the end zone on a 1-yard run with 4:17 remaining.
In the first half, Berwick scored on its opening possession via a 10-yard pass from Berwick quarterback Reed Gonzales to Kaeden Thomas on the Panthers’ opening drive of the game with 8:41 remaining. Seth Canty, who was 4-for-4 on extra point attempts, made his first of the night for a 7-0 Berwick lead.
South Terrebonne scored the game’s next three touchdowns. Chelette’s 7-yard run with 2:57 remaining in the first quarter and a Shea Pitre point-after attempt tied the score at 7.
Chelette’s 8-yard run with 11:54 remaining in the first half gave the Gators a 13-7 lead, while his third touchdown of the night, a 30-yard run with 10:11 remaining, increased South Terrebonne’s lead to 20-7.
However, Berwick came back with touchdowns on consecutive drives via a Singleton 3-yard run with 9:12 remaining in the half and a Singleton touchdown with 5:32 left in the second quarter. Canty’s point-after attempt following Singleton’s second touchdown of the night gave the Panthers a 21-20 lead.
Berwick was limited to just 230 yards of offense (114 rushing and 116 passing).
Singleton had a big night, however, leading the Panthers’ ground game with 14 carries for 138 yards and three touchdowns.
Gonzales completed 10 of 23 passes for 116 yards with a touchdown.
Thomas was his top receiver with three catches for 56 yards and a score.
In all, the Gators finished the game with 400 total yards, including 313 yards rushing on 43 carries with seven touchdowns.
Chelette led the squad with 27 carries for 233 yards and four touchdowns.
Arceneaux completed 5 of 8 passes for 79 yards.
Parr was his top receiver with three catches for 52 yards.
Berwick will return to action Friday when it hosts Vandebilt Catholic at 7 p.m.

Assumption shuts out Patterson 34-0

Assumption High School’s defense was suffocating against the Patterson Lumberjacks in producing the team’s second straight shutout win of the young football season.
After shutting out Donaldsonville in the season opener, it looked like Assumption was going to give up its first points of the season when Patterson’s Kyler Paul broke free for an apparent 72-yard touchdown off a short pass.
However, a holding call, on the Lumberjacks wiped out the touchdown and it would be the only time Patterson had the Mustangs on their heels.
From that point on, Assumption clamped down on Patterson’s offense in holding the Lumberjacks to 62 total yards in a 34-0 nondistrict win at Mustang Stadium on Friday.
While the defense was stuffing the Lumberjacks offense, Assumption racked up 397 total yards on offense and coach Anthony Paine tipped his cap to both units in getting the win.
“We haven’t stat it up just yet, but an expectation has been established here with great defense and we look to continue that,” Paine said. “There were times (on offense) when we were sluggish. We were spinning out in the mud a bit in the third quarter, but you can see how explosive we can be. It comes down to being more consistent on that side. 2-0 is great and we will enjoy this one tonight, look at the film and start our game plan before getting back to the grind on Monday.”
The Mustangs (2-0 overall) did sputter in the third quarter but in the first half they built a 21-0 lead thanks to the running of Tyran Cassie and Sage Rivere.
After the penalty wiped out Patterson’s potential score, Assumption forced a punt and needed just four plays to take a 7-0 lead. Cassie, who finished the game with 116 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns, plunged across the goal line on a 1-yard dive for the game’s first touchdown with 2:32 left in the first quarter.
The Mustangs needed just six plays on their next possession to extend the lead to 13-0 when Rivere looked to pass but so the middle of the field wide open and scampered 8 yards for a touchdown with 10:24 remaining in the second quarter.
The Mustangs third score of the first half came off a turnover as Jarius Bridges snagged an interception giving Assumption the ball at the Lumberjacks (1-1 overall) 18. Two plays later, Cassie scored on a 4-yard run and Damon Bailey ran in for a two-point conversion making it a 21-0 lead with 2:04 left before halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Assumption put the game away in the fourth quarter by converting two turnovers into two touchdowns.
An interception by Torey Oliver led to a 41-yard scoring pass from Rivere (7-of-14, 201 yards, TD) to Jaden Tyler for a 28-0 lead with 5:51 left in the fourth quarter. Then Assumption recovered a fumble at the Lumberjacks 22 and five plays later, Bailey scored on a 2-yard run for the 34-0 lead and 3:03 left on the clock.
Patterson was without its starting quarterback Louis Jones who was injured in its season opener, but Lumberjacks coach Don Jones gave credit to Assumption for beating his team at the line of scrimmage.
“We are down to our third quarterback, really down to our fourth one because I played a freshman, but they have a really good football team,” Jones said. “We had that touchdown call back then the number game got us, and we could never get anything going. Our starting quarterback got hurt last week, but they whipped us on both sides of the ball, and they have a good football team.”

White Castle tops MCHS, 44-6

White Castle High School defeated Morgan City High School 44-6 Friday at Tiger Stadium in Morgan City. The Bulldogs never trailed as they scored on four of their first five possessions. White Castle took a 6-0 lead on its first drive via a Javier Batiste 4-yard pass to Marcus Williams. The squad added a touchdown on its second drive via a Batiste 25-yard pass to Jabez Allen. A two-point conversion pass from Batiste to Alex Brown gave the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead. After Morgan City's William LaRocca intercepted a White Castle pass on the Bulldogs' next drive, Morgan City scored three plays later. On second ...

Brees expected to miss 6 weeks with thumb injury

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been diagnosed with a torn ligament near the thumb of his throwing hand that is expected to sideline him at least six weeks, said a person familiar with the situation.
Brees has elected to have surgery, but it is not yet clear when the operation will take place or who will perform it, the person said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the diagnosis has not been announced.
Brees left Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams in the first quarter after the thumb on his right hand hit the hand of on-rushing Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald on the follow trough of a throw.
The Saints lost the game 27-9, with backup Teddy Bridgewater going 17 for 30 passing for 165 yards during the last three-plus quarters.
Brees has missed only one full game because of an injury in his previous 13 seasons with New Orleans. The Saints narrowly lost that game, with Luke McCown at quarterback, at Carolina during the 2015 season.
Brees is the NFL's all-time leader in completions with 6,621 and yards passing with 74,845. His 522 touchdowns tie him for second all-time with New England's Tom Brady, 17 behind retired former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning.
The Saints are practicing this week in the Seattle area before playing the Seahawks on Sunday. New Orleans' five games after they play Seattle are against Dallas, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, Chicago and Arizona, followed by a Week 9 bye.
Bridgewater, who returned this season on a one-year, free-agent deal, is the primary backup. Taysom Hill, who plays a variety of skill positions on offense and also plays on special teams, is the third string QB. It remains to be seen how his playing time at various positions will be affected if he is elevated to second-string QB while Brees is out.
At 1-1, the Saints are tied for first place in the NFC South. They entered the season with high expectations after advancing to the NFC title game last season, losing to the Rams in a game marred by officials' non-call of pass interference and helmet-to-helmet contact fouls committed by a Rams defensive back Nickell Robey-Coleman against then Saints receiver Tommylee Lewis.
