Patterson High School will conclude its season Friday when it hosts Lutcher in District 9-3A action. The game also will be the last for head coach Don Jones, who said Wednesday night he is retiring following the game. Berwick will travel to face Donaldsonville in league play

Berwick High School will travel to face Donaldsonville Friday in what likely will be the Panthers’ regular-season finale. Berwick (3-6 overall, 1-3 in district) enters the contest ranked No. 39 in the latest unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 3A power rankings, and while it’s a longshot the Panthers would make the playoffs with a win, Walker said it’s still mathematically possible. Morgan City High School will conclude its season Friday in a District 8-4A contest at Vandebilt Catholic in Houma. CCHS, Patterson win first-round playoff games

The No. 2 Central Catholic Lady Eagles defeated No. 31 South Plaquemines 3-0 (25-2, 25-8, 25-7) in Division V first-round playoff action Wednesday in Morgan City. Yani Johnson and Katie Luc led Central Catholic. Johnson had 13 kills and two blocks, while Luc recorded 21 assists. Other top Central Catholic contributors were Ava Nicar, 10 kills and two digs; Katie Hoffpauir, four aces and 10 assists; and Lexi Landry, four kills and six aces. Tri-City Area's 4 volleyball teams qualify for postseason

Each will play 1st-round games Wed.

Each of the Tri-City Area’s four volleyball teams qualified for the postseason in their respective classes when brackets were released Monday, and each will play their first-round games Wednesday.
In Division V, Central Catholic is the No. 2 seed and will host No. 31 South Plaquemines at 5 p.m., while in Division III, No. 14 seed Morgan City will host No. 19 Brusly at 5:30 p.m. Also in Division III, No. 25 Berwick will travel to No. 8 St. Michael the Archangel at 6 p.m., while in Division IV, No. 19 Patterson will travel to face No. 14 Fisher at 5:30 p.m.
Below are short previews of each matchup.
Central Catholic vs.
South Plaquemines
Central Catholic enters Wednesday’s contest on a six-game winning streak.
The Lady Eagles finished the regular season with a 28-10 record, including a 5-0 mark in league play to win the District 2-V crown.
Meanwhile, South Plaquemines has played just eight games this season and enters the postseason with a 2-6 mark. The Hurricanes finished 1-2 in District 9-V.
South Plaquemines enters the postseason after dropping its regular-season finale against Division V’s top seed, Metairie Park Country Day, 3-0 (25-2, 25-5, 25-8) in district action.
The squad’s two wins were against Einstein Charter and Ridgewood.
Central Catholic and South Plaquemines have no common opponents this season.
Morgan City vs. Brusly
Morgan City High School enters Wednesday’s first-round contest with a 12-20 overall mark, including a 1-5 record in District 7-III play. Morgan City and Berwick finished tied for third in district.
The Lady Tigers enter the postseason on a three-game losing streak after falling in three of their four contests at Dunham’s tournament Saturday.
Meanwhile, Brusly enters its first-round playoff matchup with an 18-22 overall record, including a 4-1 mark in District 5-III action.
Brusly has won two straight entering the playoffs after defeating Plaquemine and Belaire to end the regular season.
Morgan City and Brusly have several common opponents. Each team has played Thibodaux, Terrebonne, Ascension Catholic, St. Michael the Archangel, Ursuline Academy and Sam Houston. Both squads lost to each team (Brusly fell twice to Terrebonne) except St. Michael the Archangel. Brusly fell to its district foe, while Morgan City defeated it.
Berwick vs. St. Michael the Archangel
Berwick enters its first-round playoff matchup with a 10-18 overall record, including a 1-5 mark in District 7-III play. Berwick finished tied for third in district play with Morgan City.
Berwick has lost four straight entering the playoffs. The Lady Panthers’ last win was against Morgan City on Oct. 15.
Meanwhile, St. Michael enters the postseason with a 21-15 overall mark, including a 5-0 record in District 5-III play.
The Warriors have lost two straight entering the playoffs after dropping their final two games at Dunham’s tournament Saturday. One of those losses was to Morgan City.
The team has four common opponents. Each fell to Metairie Park Country Day, Division V’s top seed, while each team fell to Lutcher (Berwick dropped both district games to the Bulldogs).
While St. Michael fell to Morgan City, Berwick split its district contests with the Lady Tigers.
Also, Berwick fell to Catholic-Pointe Coupee, while St. Michael the Archangel defeated them.
Patterson vs. Fisher
Patterson enters its first-round matchup with a 14-10 overall mark, including a 3-4 record in District 2-IV action this season.
Patterson has won two straight games entering the playoffs, defeating Centerville and West St. Mary last week.
Meanwhile, Fisher finished the regular season with a 16-4 record, including an 8-0 mark in District 7-IV play.
The Gators are on a 13-game winning streak, last falling to Frederick A. Douglass High in five sets on Sept. 19.
Patterson and Fisher have no common opponents.

Morgan City High School finishes 1-3 at Dunham's tournament

Morgan City finished 1-3 at Dunham’s tournament this weekend. The Lady Tigers defeated St. Michael the Archangel and fell to Dutchtown, Airline and H.L. Bourgeois. Against St. Michael, Morgan City won 2-1 (8-25, 27-25, 15-12). Jamia Francois and Tia Estay led Morgan City. Francois had two aces, nine kills, three blocks and one dig, while Estay had 10 assists and eight digs. Other top Morgan City contributors were Brynn Stephens, two aces and nine digs; Faith Bailey, one assist and nine digs; and Hailey Denning, two aces and three digs. Search underway for boat that left Cypremort Point

The Coast Guard and local agencies are searching for one person aboard an overdue vessel in Vermilion Bay.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report from St. Mary Sheriff’s Department at 8:35 p.m. Thursday of an overdue 17-foot Boston Whaler.

The vessel is a tan and white 17-foot Boston Whaler with a trawling system off the stern.

The man aboard left Cypremort Point and was scheduled to arrive at Marsh Island Thursday afternoon.

Police: Man shoplifted, forced way into home

A shoplifter who assaulted a local store’s employee and fled into a residence he forced himself into in an attempt to hide, Morgan City Police Chief James F. Blair said in a news release.
—Joseph Young, 50, of Railroad Avenue in Patterson, was arrested at 3:26 p.m. Wednesday on charges of theft under $1,000, simple battery, unauthorized entry into an inhabited dwelling and resisting an officer.
Officers were called to a local business on La.182 about a shoplifter. When officers arrived, they were informed the shoplifter fled on foot.
While officers searched the area, they were informed the shoplifter had forced his way into a nearby residence. Officers located the shoplifter, identified as Young, hiding inside the residence. When officers attempted to arrest Young, he began to physically resist, Blair said. Officers were able to secure Young in handcuffs and place him under arrest. The investigation revealed Young had concealed several items valued at $100.00 on his person while in the store, Blair said.
A store employee attempted to stop Young from leaving the store at which time Young committed a battery on the employee before fleeing the store. He was jailed.
Blair also reported that the Morgan City Police Department responded to 47 calls of service and the following arrests were made:
—Naomi Beth Pitre, 34, of La. 182 in Morgan City, was arrested at 6:43 p.m. on charges of theft under $1,000, possession of Schedule II controlled dangerous substance (methamphetamine) and possession of Schedule V controlled dangerous substance (Xanax). Officers were called to a local business on Seventh Street about a shoplifter. Officers were advised by store employees they witnessed Pitre concealing merchandise on her person. Upon the officer making contact with Pitre, they found stolen merchandise concealed on her person. She was also found in possession of suspected methamphetamine and Xanax. She was jailed.
—Courtney Marie Schahn, 23, of Arenz Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 6:48 p.m. Wednesday on charges of possession of a Schedule I controlled dangerous substance (heroin), possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of a drug-free zone and illegal use of controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a person under 17 years of age.
—Jerron Jamal Granger, 30, of Arenz Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 6:48 p.m. Wednesday on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Detectives with the Morgan City Narcotics Division executed a search warrant at an Arenz Street residence with the assistance of St. Mary Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division. During the execution of the search warrant, investigators located Schahn, Granger and a small infant inside the residence. Investigators located suspected heroin and drug paraphernalia in the possession of Schahn, Blair said. Granger was found to be in possession of suspected drug paraphernalia. The residence was located within a drug-free zone. Schahn and Grander were jailed.
—Larry Garrett Barnett, 40, of Sixth Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 9:01 p.m. Wednesday on charges of domestic abuse child endangerment and aggravated assault. Officers were called to a Sixth Street residence about a domestic disturbance. Officers learned Barnett had threated the victim with a knife in front of a small child. Bernett was located at the residence and placed under arrest. He was jailed.
—John Washington, 64, of Sixth Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 10:36 p.m. Wednesday on a charge of possession with the intent to distribute marijuana. Officers investigating a suspicious person complaint on Mallard Street came into contact with Washington. During the officer’s investigation, Washington was found in possession of suspected marijuana that was packaged for sales. He was jailed.
—Jill M. Parker, 45, of Two Brothers Lane in Morgan City, was arrested at 12:15 a.m. Thursday on warrants for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and three counts of failure to appear. Officers came into contact with Jill Parker at a local motel on La.182. A warrant check revealed City Court of Morgan City and 16th District Court held active warrants. She was jailed.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Blaise Smith advised that the Sheriff’s Office responded to 31 complaints and reported the following arrest:
—Daniel Michael Elliott, 20, of Cane Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 7:56 p.m. Wednesday on charges of disturbing the peace intoxicated, threatening a public official and obstruction of highway. A deputy was dispatched to a local business in Bayou Vista in reference to a subject who had been walking in the middle of the roadway and was acting suspiciously. The deputy made contact with the subject, identified as Elliott. Through the investigation, Elliott became loud and threatened the deputy. He was jailed with no bail set.
Berwick Police Chief David Leonard Sr. reported the following arrest:
Tyler Kapp, 28, of Fifth Street in Berwick, was arrested at 4:59 p.m. Wednesday on charges of possession of synthetic cannabinoids. Officers were patrolling the area of Pacific Street when they observed a subject on the railroad tracks and a parked vehicle nearby. Upon making contact with the subject, identified as Kapp, officers indicated that he appeared to be impaired. During the course of the investigation, officers gained consent to search the vehicle and later located synthetic marijuana. Kapp was placed under arrest and also found to be in possession of another bag of synthetic marijuana on his person. He was jailed with bond set at $2,000.
Patterson Police Chief Garrett Grogan reported the following arrests:
—Frank Peavy, 47, of Gerami Street in Patterson, was arrested at 10:05 a.m. Wednesday on a charge of criminal trespass. He was jailed and released on a bond of $404.
—Lacey Nicole Yates, 36, of Willowbend Lane in Patterson, was arrested at 9:09 p.m. Tuesday on a charge of driving under suspension. She was jailed and released on a bond of $437.
—Patrick Thomas, 47, of Feu Follet Road in Lafayette, was arrested at 9:44 p.m. Tuesday on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of crack cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of legend drug without a prescription. He was jailed with no bond set.
