Tri-City Area's 4 volleyball teams qualify for postseason

Each will play 1st-round games Wed.

Each of the Tri-City Area’s four volleyball teams qualified for the postseason in their respective classes when brackets were released Monday, and each will play their first-round games Wednesday.
In Division V, Central Catholic is the No. 2 seed and will host No. 31 South Plaquemines at 5 p.m., while in Division III, No. 14 seed Morgan City will host No. 19 Brusly at 5:30 p.m. Also in Division III, No. 25 Berwick will travel to No. 8 St. Michael the Archangel at 6 p.m., while in Division IV, No. 19 Patterson will travel to face No. 14 Fisher at 5:30 p.m.
Below are short previews of each matchup.
Central Catholic vs.
South Plaquemines
Central Catholic enters Wednesday’s contest on a six-game winning streak.
The Lady Eagles finished the regular season with a 28-10 record, including a 5-0 mark in league play to win the District 2-V crown.
Meanwhile, South Plaquemines has played just eight games this season and enters the postseason with a 2-6 mark. The Hurricanes finished 1-2 in District 9-V.
South Plaquemines enters the postseason after dropping its regular-season finale against Division V’s top seed, Metairie Park Country Day, 3-0 (25-2, 25-5, 25-8) in district action.
The squad’s two wins were against Einstein Charter and Ridgewood.
Central Catholic and South Plaquemines have no common opponents this season.
Morgan City vs. Brusly
Morgan City High School enters Wednesday’s first-round contest with a 12-20 overall mark, including a 1-5 record in District 7-III play. Morgan City and Berwick finished tied for third in district.
The Lady Tigers enter the postseason on a three-game losing streak after falling in three of their four contests at Dunham’s tournament Saturday.
Meanwhile, Brusly enters its first-round playoff matchup with an 18-22 overall record, including a 4-1 mark in District 5-III action.
Brusly has won two straight entering the playoffs after defeating Plaquemine and Belaire to end the regular season.
Morgan City and Brusly have several common opponents. Each team has played Thibodaux, Terrebonne, Ascension Catholic, St. Michael the Archangel, Ursuline Academy and Sam Houston. Both squads lost to each team (Brusly fell twice to Terrebonne) except St. Michael the Archangel. Brusly fell to its district foe, while Morgan City defeated it.
Berwick vs. St. Michael the Archangel
Berwick enters its first-round playoff matchup with a 10-18 overall record, including a 1-5 mark in District 7-III play. Berwick finished tied for third in district play with Morgan City.
Berwick has lost four straight entering the playoffs. The Lady Panthers’ last win was against Morgan City on Oct. 15.
Meanwhile, St. Michael enters the postseason with a 21-15 overall mark, including a 5-0 record in District 5-III play.
The Warriors have lost two straight entering the playoffs after dropping their final two games at Dunham’s tournament Saturday. One of those losses was to Morgan City.
The team has four common opponents. Each fell to Metairie Park Country Day, Division V’s top seed, while each team fell to Lutcher (Berwick dropped both district games to the Bulldogs).
While St. Michael fell to Morgan City, Berwick split its district contests with the Lady Tigers.
Also, Berwick fell to Catholic-Pointe Coupee, while St. Michael the Archangel defeated them.
Patterson vs. Fisher
Patterson enters its first-round matchup with a 14-10 overall mark, including a 3-4 record in District 2-IV action this season.
Patterson has won two straight games entering the playoffs, defeating Centerville and West St. Mary last week.
Meanwhile, Fisher finished the regular season with a 16-4 record, including an 8-0 mark in District 7-IV play.
The Gators are on a 13-game winning streak, last falling to Frederick A. Douglass High in five sets on Sept. 19.
Patterson and Fisher have no common opponents.
