Metal Shark delivers patrol boat to Puerto Rican police

Jeanerette-based shipbuilder Metal Shark has delivered a new 36-foot welded-aluminum patrol boat to the Policia Municipal de San Juan (San Juan Police Department), its newest customer on the island of Puerto Rico, the company said in a press release.
The new patrol boat is a 36 Fearless stepped-bottom center console vessel built at Metal Shark’s Jeanerette production facility and configured to meet the specialized requirements of the San Juan Police Department.
The craft has been equipped with triple 300 horsepower Suzuki outboard engines and reaches a top speed in excess of 50 knots.
Other mission-enhancing features include a custom 36-inch dive door and dive ladder, underwater lighting, twelve dive tank holders, Garmin Radar, and FLIR camera.
Metal Shark has now delivered five new patrol boats in the past three years to Puerto Rico, where another law enforcement agency, the Puerto Rico Police Department also operates a fleet of Metal Shark vessels.
“The design, construction, and performance characteristics of this highly capable craft have been extensively proven in Puerto Rico’s demanding open-ocean conditions, with the Puerto Rico Police Department logging over 3,000 hours per year in its Metal Shark 36 Fearless vessels,” said Metal Shark’s vice president of international business development, Henry Irizarry.
“Metal Shark’s performance, durability, and safety, as demonstrated and proven by the PRPD over years of around-the-clock operation, made the selection of this vessel a logical choice for the San Juan Police.”
The San Juan police will use the new Metal Shark to support a wide range of missions.
The department provides port security and law enforcement to the Port of San Juan and the metropolitan San Juan coast, and also supports dive operations throughout the island.
“Puerto Rico presents unique challenges from a maritime law enforcement perspective due to the vast range of missions routinely conducted by its agencies, including disaster relief, search and rescue, counter narcotics, border patrol, and interdiction missions, all of which may be conducted in heavy offshore conditions,” Irizarry said.
“Metal Shark is proud to be repeatedly chosen by Puerto Rico’s law enforcement agencies for these demanding but vital missions.”
In addition to this newest delivery, Metal Shark has multiple other projects for Puerto Rico in various stages of development, including a custom 27-foot vessel currently being built for another Puerto Rico government agency.
Metal Shark is a diversified shipbuilder specializing in the design and construction of welded aluminum and steel vessels from 16 feet to over 300 feet for defense, law enforcement, and commercial operators.
Key customers include the United States Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, Army, foreign militaries, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, passenger vessel operators, pilot associations, towboat operators, and other clients worldwide.
With three fully self-contained shipbuilding facilities in Alabama and Louisiana USA plus a dedicated engineering facility in Croatia, Metal Shark’s more than 500 employees produce over 200 vessels per year with a proud and proven track record of high quality, on time deliveries.

La. Tech to host Google workshop for undergraduates

The Louisiana Tech University College of Engineering and Science will host its second annual CREWE (Cyber Research for Empowering Women Experimenters) workshop Feb. 23–25, and applications are still open for interested students.
The Google-sponsored workshop will be held in University Hall on Louisiana Tech’s Ruston campus.
The annual workshop, which features innovative topics in computing, including cyber security, internet of things and cloud computing, is open to undergraduate students enrolled in computer science, cyber engineering, computer information systems and related disciplines at any Louisiana university.
Last year, the workshop provided 40 undergraduate students, including 34 women, from universities throughout the region with the opportunity to network while performing cyber experiments.
Attendees watched presentations by mentors from Louisiana Tech, Bossier Parish Community College, Grambling State University, Northwestern State University and the University of Louisiana — Monroe. The students learned about getting admitted to graduate programs, finding a research advisor and earning research fellowships.
They also heard from mentors on computing topics like smart cities, machine learning, ethics in information systems, cyber security, cloud computing and risk analysis. They then worked in teams with the mentors to develop their own research plans. The workshop culminated in each of the teams presenting their research plans to the larger group. The 2020 workshop will follow a similar format.
“As a student wanting to go to graduate school but who is clueless as to what discipline I want to major in during graduate school, the CREWE workshop gave me meaningful insight into the many areas possible in the world of computing,” Alyse Jones, junior electrical engineering student at Louisiana Tech said. “I got a feel for what I did or didn’t like, despite the brief exposure to each topic.”
Mentors also left the workshop with a better understanding of the roles of women in computing fields.
“The most important lesson I learned was to be aware of the culture prejudices affiliated with the computing disciplines,” Ben Drozdenko, assistant professor of cyber engineering at Louisiana Tech, principle investigator of the Google grant and one of the leads in organizing the workshop, said. “To build a sense of belonging among women in computing disciplines, I should not assume that all computing students like fantasy or science fiction, or picture Bill Gates as a computing expert; instead, I should enable an environment where students of any gender and from various backgrounds can feel welcome and at ease.”
“Women are under-represented in computer science and cybersecurity,” Lorraine Jacques, assistant professor of computer science and curriculum instruction and leadership at Tech, added. “Especially in careers that require a graduate degree. We need our voices included at the decision-making and research levels so we can make an impact in our communities. This workshop will show undergraduates not only what’s possible, but how they as individuals belong in cyber research and leadership.”
The CREWE workshop is funded by oneof only 15 Google exploreCSR-Google Grant for Undergrad CS Research Focused Workshops for Women grants awarded across the nation.
Accepted students will receive accommodations for the duration of the workshop, free daily lunches, bus transit between the hotel and workshop venue, and a certificate of completion.
Applications are due by Feb. 8.

Daughter wishes stepfather would visit mom more often

DEAR ABBY: My mother is in a locked ward of a nursing home because she has Alzheimer’s and is a flight risk. My stepfather has begun dating her best friend. He doesn’t consider it dating because, at 85, he’s no longer capable of having a physical relationship. However, taking someone to dinner, the theater, church or to a movie constitutes a date to me. People in our small town are talking. I don’t care about that. It’s not their business. I don’t begrudge my stepfather and his lady their relationship, but he no longer visits Mom as often as he used ...

Collision sidelines dredge scheduled to work in Berwick Bay

Staff Report
Berwick Bay will have to wait for dredging by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers vessel Jadwin.
The dustpan dredge, which was due to work here for a few days while in transit to its headquarters in Vicksburg, Mississippi, was struck by a westbound tow at Calumet Cut on Saturday morning, Port of Morgan City Director Raymond “Mac” Wade reported by text message Monday.
There were no injuries, but the dredge was damaged, Wade said.
“Corps plans on getting inland Dredge back in here in about 2 weeks to finish Berwick Bay,” Wade said.
The Jadwin’s operating expenses can run into six figures each day. The Port of Morgan City appeared to get a break when the Jadwin was to be available during its run back to Vicksbug, so the port would have to pay only for the work here and not for transit time.
Wade said at last week’s St. Mary Parish Council meeting that the Jadwin can move up to four times the material than can be accomplished by some of the cutter head dredges that have been working on local waterways.
The Jadwin completed its most recent season, which typically lasts from May until October or November, by dredging more than 4 million cubic yards of sand and sediment from navigable waterways, keeping channels open for commercial traffic.
The Jadwin uses a large suction head to scoop up sediment and uses water jets and a floating pipeline to move the material out of the channel.
A crew of 50 lives and works aboard the Jadwin when it’s deployed.
The vessel was set to work south of the bridges on Berwick Bay because it’s too big to fit beneath them.

St. Martin native joins Bloomberg campaign

A St. Martin Parish native has been named to the Louisiana campaign staff of presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg.
Micah Cormier has been named communications director for Bloomberg in Louisiana, where the presidential primary is slated for April 4.
Cormier has a decade of experience in Louisiana government service and political campaigns. He most recently served as Executive director of communications and technology for St. Charles Parish Government, where he acted as public information officer and chief Spokesperson.
Before his time in St. Charles, he was press secretary and special assistant to Gov. John Bel Edwards. He has managed and worked on several Louisiana campaigns and worked in several state agencies, including the Department of Natural Resources and Louisiana Public Service Commission.
Veteran political operative Richard Carbo will lead the campaign’s efforts in Louisiana as state director. Carbo founded Carbo Consulting and recently managed Governor John Bel Edwards’ successful 2019 reelection campaign. Ryan Berni, president of Berni Consulting and former deputy mayor of external affairs for New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, will serve as senior adviser for southern states.
Senior staff members include:
—Bill Rouselle, senior adviser
