Berwick falls, 52-22

For the first time this season, the Berwick Panthers played a home game Friday. This is the Panthers’ first home game of seven on the season. Along with 70% of their schedule being home, the Panthers will play their next five games in Berwick.
To kick off their home stand, Berwick did not defend the home turf, losing 52-22. Franklin scored 36 unanswered points in the first half. Franklin’s Deshun Lightfoot would have five TDs total in this game, with four coming in the first half.
Down 36-0, Berwick started off the second half with a surprise onside kick that worked. And right after the onside kick, Vincent Dohmann threw it over the middle to Miguel Melendez, who took it 51 yards to house.
Melendez would score another touchdown later in the game in almost identical fashion. Carter Dupuis would also score, taking a slant 60 yards to paydirt.
Despite a little push at the end of the game, Berwick could not pull off the implausible comeback.
Next week the 0-3 Panthers will play the 0-2 Hanson Tigers.
Berwick’s Maddox Sampey rushed 25 times for 101 yards. Dohmann hit seven of 15 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns. Melendez had two catches for two scores and 100 yards.
Franklin’s Lightfoot caught four passes from Jahiri Perry for 244 yards and scores of 80, 72 and 79 yards. Lightfoot rushed for 26-yard and 42-yard TDs.
Bridrick Joseph gained 65 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

His warmth, generosity, and steady presence created a legacy not only of skilled craftsmanship but of love, laughter, and togetherness. He leaves behind a life rich in tradition, full of stories passed down to family and friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

Texas State starts fast, upends Nicholls

Texas State rushed for four touchdowns in the first half as the Nicholls State University football team suffered a 35-3 loss Saturday night at UFCU Stadium.

With the loss, Nicholls dropped to 1-3 overall, which includes a pair of FBS losses, while Texas State improved to 3-1. Since making the transition to the FBS, the Bobcats have won the last three meetings in the all-time series.

The Colonel offense was limited to 224 yards with Miequle Brock Jr. accounting for 95 yards, rushing 11 times for 59 yards while adding six receptions. Quarterback Deuce Hogan completed 15 of 21 passes for 97 yards and had one interception which came in the end zone right before halftime. For the defense, Ty Marsh led with nine tackles while Ethan Lee and Laurence Sullivan Jr. had seven each.

Texas State scored on its opening drive, going 92 yards on 13 plays. Bobcat QB Brad Jackson ended the possession with a 9-yard touchdown run for an early 7-0 advantage. But Nicholls was able to answer with its own scoring drive, helped by a 19-yard rush by Shane Lee. Gabriel Showalter put the Colonels on the board with a 32-yard field goal.

On the kickoff, Ethan Lee attempted an onside kick and recovered it, but the ball did not travel 10 yards and the Bobcats took over at midfield. Texas State then grabbed a 14-3 advantage on Jackson's second TD run of the half.

Following consecutive Colonel punts, the Bobcats scored two more rushing touchdowns. Torrance Burgess Jr. found the end zone from 7 yards out before Lincoln Pare scored on a 9-yard carry for a 28-3 lead.

Nicholls pieced together a two-minute drill, getting a 15-yard rush by Brock to start the drive before a pair of penalties moved the ball down to the Bobcat 3. But on third down, Hogan lofted a pass to the corner of the end zone and it was picked off by Khamair Terrell for the Bobcats' first turnover of the year.

In the third quarter, Texas State notched its fifth rushing score on a Greg Burrell 5-yard TD to make the final.

Jackson completed 13 of 20 passes for 180 yards and the Bobcat offense racked up 199 yards on the ground.

UP NEXT
Nicholls will play its final nonconference game with a trip to Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, Sept. 27. Kickoff in Richmond is scheduled for 5 p.m. central.
