Berwick falls, 52-22
For the first time this season, the Berwick Panthers played a home game Friday. This is the Panthers’ first home game of seven on the season. Along with 70% of their schedule being home, the Panthers will play their next five games in Berwick.
To kick off their home stand, Berwick did not defend the home turf, losing 52-22. Franklin scored 36 unanswered points in the first half. Franklin’s Deshun Lightfoot would have five TDs total in this game, with four coming in the first half.
Down 36-0, Berwick started off the second half with a surprise onside kick that worked. And right after the onside kick, Vincent Dohmann threw it over the middle to Miguel Melendez, who took it 51 yards to house.
Melendez would score another touchdown later in the game in almost identical fashion. Carter Dupuis would also score, taking a slant 60 yards to paydirt.
Despite a little push at the end of the game, Berwick could not pull off the implausible comeback.
Next week the 0-3 Panthers will play the 0-2 Hanson Tigers.
Berwick’s Maddox Sampey rushed 25 times for 101 yards. Dohmann hit seven of 15 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns. Melendez had two catches for two scores and 100 yards.
Franklin’s Lightfoot caught four passes from Jahiri Perry for 244 yards and scores of 80, 72 and 79 yards. Lightfoot rushed for 26-yard and 42-yard TDs.
Bridrick Joseph gained 65 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.
