Christmas is in the air -- and so is Santa

Santa has been greeting drivers on U.S. 90 recently from high atop the Phoenix International dive tower in Bayou Vista, thanks to Phoenix employee Kimberly Bailey. The tower, installed this year, is 40 feet high and holds about 40,000 gallons of water that Phoenix uses to test welds.

Amelia-built Bollinger barge will play role in submarine-building

Bollinger Shipyards has delivered the Ocean Transport Barge Holland to General Dynamics-Electric Boat’s Groton Shipyard.
The Holland will support the construction and maintenance of the United States’ Columbia Class ballistic missile submarines and Virginia Class fast attack submarines, Bollinger said in a press release.
General Dynamics-Electric Boat is the prime contractor on the design and build of the Columbia Class submarine, which will replace the aging Ohio class ballistic missile Submarines and is a top strategic defense priority for the United States.
“Being able to deliver OTB Holland on time and on budget is a testament to the strength, commitment and resilience of the men and women of the Bollinger workforce," said Bollinger President and CEO Ben Bordelon, "especially following the significant damage sustained to our shipyards and communities following Hurricane Ida earlier this year," said Bollinger looks forward to continuing to help meet the expanding needs of the United States’ Navy and supporting efforts to modernize our Nation’s fleet.”
In November 2019, General Dynamics-Electric Boat selected Bollinger to construct the Holland, a 400-by-100 foot ocean transport barge. The concept and contract design was performed by the Bristol Harbor Group in Rhode Island, while Bollinger performed the detail design engineering at Lockport and construction at the Bollinger Marine Fabrication facility in Amelia.
The Columbia Class is now being built at Electric Boat’s Quonset Point, Rhode Island, manufacturing facility. Skilled tradespeople will construct and outfit Columbia modules at Quonset Point. Modules will then be transported by the Holland barge to the company’s final test and assembly facility in Groton. The first Columbia module is expected to arrive in Groton in 2023.

UPDATED WITH STORY: Central Catholic's Mabile signs with BRCC

Shelbie Mabile had her eye on Baton Rouge Community College for career training. The BRCC softball coaches had their eye on the Central Catholic High athlete, too.
Those things came together Monday at the Central Catholic gym, when Mabile signed a letter of intent to attend and play softball at the Baton Rouge school.
It was the second signing in less than a month for Central Catholic. On Nov. 18, pitcher Hallie Crappell of Morgan City signed to study and play softball at Denver’s Regis University.
Mabile had career in mind as she looked at BRCC.
“I wanted to study in their sonography pro-gram,” she said Monday.
Sonography is the technology that allows health care professionals to use sound waves to look inside the body to, among other things, take pictures of unborn children.
BRCC’s coaches had already scouted Central Catholic.
“[Mabile] is the kind of player we were looking for,” said head coach Abby Bolton. “She’s speedy, and she plays hard.”
“They talked to me about softball,” Mabile said. “It was a perfect fit.”
This year’s crop of recruits will be the first full recruiting class for Bolton at BRCC. Mabile’s ability to run fits in with her plans.
“We’ve added some speed and some pitching, too,” Bolton said.
Before she puts on a Bears jersey, Mabile has one more season at Central Catholic. Last year, she played center field. This year she’ll be back behind the plate, said Central Catholic coach Sunni Blanchard.
“She’s got some big shoes to fill at catcher,” Blanchard said.
Mabile will succeed top recruit Rylie Jeau Theriot, who helped the Eagles reach the state quarterfinals last year.
On Monday, Mabile was surrounded by her teammates and her family for pictures as she signed her letter. She’s the daughter of Edward and Ameline Mabile of Pierre Part.
