UPDATED WITH STORY: Central Catholic's Mabile signs with BRCC

Shelbie Mabile had her eye on Baton Rouge Community College for career training. The BRCC softball coaches had their eye on the Central Catholic High athlete, too.
Those things came together Monday at the Central Catholic gym, when Mabile signed a letter of intent to attend and play softball at the Baton Rouge school.
It was the second signing in less than a month for Central Catholic. On Nov. 18, pitcher Hallie Crappell of Morgan City signed to study and play softball at Denver’s Regis University.
Mabile had career in mind as she looked at BRCC.
“I wanted to study in their sonography pro-gram,” she said Monday.
Sonography is the technology that allows health care professionals to use sound waves to look inside the body to, among other things, take pictures of unborn children.
BRCC’s coaches had already scouted Central Catholic.
“[Mabile] is the kind of player we were looking for,” said head coach Abby Bolton. “She’s speedy, and she plays hard.”
“They talked to me about softball,” Mabile said. “It was a perfect fit.”
This year’s crop of recruits will be the first full recruiting class for Bolton at BRCC. Mabile’s ability to run fits in with her plans.
“We’ve added some speed and some pitching, too,” Bolton said.
Before she puts on a Bears jersey, Mabile has one more season at Central Catholic. Last year, she played center field. This year she’ll be back behind the plate, said Central Catholic coach Sunni Blanchard.
“She’s got some big shoes to fill at catcher,” Blanchard said.
Mabile will succeed top recruit Rylie Jeau Theriot, who helped the Eagles reach the state quarterfinals last year.
On Monday, Mabile was surrounded by her teammates and her family for pictures as she signed her letter. She’s the daughter of Edward and Ameline Mabile of Pierre Part.
