Hams will be on the air at Berwick lighthouse

Berwick’s Southwest Reef Lighthouse will be on the air Friday evening and all day Saturday and Sunday, The Bayouland Emergency Amateur Radio Service, will be calling CQ on the ham bands, listening for lighthouses and lightships as well as other ham radio stations worldwide. The station is located in the pavilion next to the Ray Rasberry Memorial Tower on the riverfront. This operation is open to the public and members of BEARS will be on hand to answer any questions about the event or about ham radio in general.

Assumption joins effort to reduce drunken driving

The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office is participating in the in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, Sheriff Leland Falcon announced.

The Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission to patrol the highways of the parish from Friday through Sept. 5 in an effort to reduce impaired driving and serious motor vehicle accidents.

Funding is being made available through NHTSA and LHSC to the Sheriff’s Office to pay for the impaired driver’s enforcement campaign.

Community Clean Up Day will be Aug. 27 in Morgan City

Operation Beautification, in partnership with Keep St. Mary Beautiful, is holding a Community Clean Up Day on Aug. 27 in Morgan City.

Volunteers are asked to gather at the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium parking lot at 8 a.m. for assignments, gloves, bags and shirts. Shirts will be available while supplies last.

Groups will be dispersed to different locations throughout the city in need of liter removal.

The cleanup work will take place through noon.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office now part of Neighbors

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office has joined Neighbors, an organization devoted to promoting public safety.

“The SMPSO is excited to join Neighbors in our efforts to connect with residents and improve the safety of our communities,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post. “Neighbors allows you, the user, to share photos, videos, and information related to local crime and safety incidents so fellow residents can stay informed.”

The SMPSO can view what local residents have posted publicly to Neighbors and can now chime in with relevant updates or safety alerts to help residents stay informed.

You do not need a ring device to join Neighbors.

Anyone with a smart phone can download the Neighbors app to receive updates and have the option to post photos or videos from any device.

Percle and Caillouet were tied multiple times, but Percle ended up claiming class title.

Tournament funds will be sent to the National Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame in memory of deceased members of the Bayou Horseshoe Pitchers Association.

Drama Camp begins Sept. 16 in Morgan City

Area youth ages 6-18 have the chance to attend the Baillie Players Drama Camp Sept. 16-19 at the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium.

“We are a non-profit touring children's theatre production company,” said Baillie Players’ Milner Martin. “We have worked with the Tri-City Youth Theatre for the past 20 or so years. This is our first Baillie Players-led drama camp in Morgan City.”

The camp is held 4-6 p.m. daily and costs $52.50 per student.

There will be a Hansel & Gretel performance by the students Sept. 20 at 10 a.m., 12:45 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tickets will be $5 at the door.
