Police, deputies arrest 9 on assault or battery charges

(Editor’s note: The charges listed here and the narratives that go with them are provided by the police agencies that made the arrests. Guilt or innocence has not been determined in court.)

Local authorities made nine arrests on assault or battery charges over the long holiday weekend, including four related to domestic abuse.

St. Mary Parish deputies also arrested a Morgan City man who is accused of rape in an assault on a victim younger than 13.

Six people were also arrested on drunken-driving charges, one of them in a DWI checkpoint in Berwick.

Morgan City

Interim Police Chief Mark E. Griffin Jr. reported that the Morgan City Police Department responded to 194 complaints over the 96-hour holiday reporting period and made these arrests:

--Carolina S. Huddleston-Causadias, 32, Bernice Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 8:46 p.m. Friday on a charge of aggravated battery.

--Leon Sylvester, 38, Glenwood Street, Morgan City was arrested at 2:27 a.m. Saturday on a charge of battery of a dating partner.

--Heather Rhianon Moore, 36, Glenwood Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 2:31 a.m. Saturday on a charge of battery of a dating partner and criminal damage to property.

--Jessica Paige Smith, 35, Filmore Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 1:25 a.m. Saturday as a fugitive from the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office.

--Shawn Casey Lovell Sr, 45, Sixth Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 5:39 p.m. Saturday on charges of disturbing the peace (intoxicated), entry or remaining where forbidden and failure to appear for arraignment (16th Judicial District Court).

--Shawn Lovell Jr., 19, River Road, Berwick, was arrested 5:39 p.m. Saturday on a charge of disturbing the peace (intoxicated) and as a fugitive from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office.

--Gerald Wayne Crooks, 61, Fourth Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 5:41 p.m. Saturday on a charge of domestic abuse battery and false imprisonment.

--Sarah Spain Landry, 35, President Street, Thibodaux, was arrested at 9:13 p.m. Saturday as a fugitive from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office.

--Timothy Lashawn Johnson, 43, Federal Avenue, Morgan City, was arrested on a charge of resisting an officer and three counts of failure to appear for arraignment (6th Ward Morgan City Court).

--Carlos Flores, 23, Marietta Place, Morgan City, was arrested at 2:10 a.m. Sunday on a charge by disturbing the peace (fighting).

--Gabriel Damazo Cardenas, 21, Rochell Villa Street, Gray, was arrested at 2:10 a.m. Sunday on charges of aggravated assault with a firearm, possession of a firearm in an alcohol establishment and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

--Carley Gros, 21, La. 70, Pierre Part, was arrested at 3 a.m. Sunday on a charge of simple battery.

--Russell Lee Van Meter, 65, Arenz Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 3:46 a.m. Sunday on a charge of simple battery.

--Chance David Jewett, 23, Country Village, Morgan City, was arrested at 3:58 a.m. Sunday on a charge of disturbing the peace (fighting).

--Robecca Martin, 50, Duke Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 11:03 a.m. Sunday on a charge of unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling.

--Raven Wiggins, 21, Sacred Heart Drive, Morgan City, was arrested at 7:15 p.m. Sunday on a charge of obstruction of justice.

--Kelli Alexis Muirhead, 22, Duke Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 8:08 p.m. Sunday on a charge of failure to appear for arraignment (6th Ward Morgan City Court).

--Joseph Burton, 47, Duke Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 817 p.m. Sunday on charges of driving while intoxicated (first offense), reckless operation of a motor vehicle, driving under suspension, possession of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana and two counts of failure to appear to pay fine (6th Ward Morgan City Court).

--Travis J. Theriot, 32, Saturn Road, Morgan City, was arrested at 9:58 p.m. Sunday on a charge of disturbing the peace (intoxicated) and two counts of simple battery.

--Denisha Dariona Tilford, 20, Sparrow Street, Labadieville, was arrested at 10:42 p.m. Sunday on a charge of illegal carrying of weapons.

--Amado Fernandez-Arriola, 59, Larkspur Landing, Richmond, Texas, was arrested at 12:44 a.m. Monday on a charge of driving while intoxicated (first offense) and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

--Desmond Young, 22, Joseph Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 5:28 p.m. Monday on charges of possession of marijuana, careless operation of a motor vehicle, aggravated flight from an officer, aggravated obstruction of a highway of commerce, resisting an officer, hit and run, no driver’s license, switched license plate, three counts of false imprisonment, three counts of contributing to the delinquency of juveniles, three counts of illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of juveniles and failure to appear to pay fine (6th Ward Morgan City Court).

--Jalaycia Johna Declouet, 22, Railroad Avenue, Morgan City, was arrested at 9:01 p.m. Monday on charges of child restraint required and failure to appear for arraignment (6th Ward Morgan City Court).

St. Mary

Sheriff Blaise Smith reported that over the last 96-hour reporting period, the Sheriff's Office responded to 95 complaints and made these arrests:

--Alec Joseph Robinson, 25, Morgan City, was arrested at 1:47 p.m. Friday on a warrant alleging first-degree rape (victim under 13 years of age). Bail has not been set.

--Bria Da'mir Parker, 21, New Iberia, was arrested at 3:49 p.m. Saturday on a warrant alleging failure to appear on charges of simple battery and resisting an officer. Parker was released on a $7,500 bond.

--Jennifer Rose Hatfield, 46, Ricohoc, was arrested at 1:03 a.m. Friday on charges of driving while intoxicated, improper lane usage and driving under suspension.

--Trent Michael Ponville, 29, Pierre Part, was arrested at 1:38 a.m. Sunday on charges of driving while intoxicated and improper lane usage. Ponville was released on a $1,090 bond.

--Lorenzo Cardell Marks, 35, Jeanerette, was arrested at 1:25 a.m. Monday on a charge of battery of a dating partner. Bail was set on the SMPSO charge at $5,000.

--Paris Nicole Bias, 31, Morgan City, was arrested at 8:52 a.m. Friday on two warrants alleging theft and theft of a motor vehicle. Bail has not been set.

--Christopher Darnell Seymour, 47, Gibson, was arrested at 7:14 p.m. Saturday on a warrant alleging failure to appear on charges of simple burglary, possession of Schedule I drugs, unauthorized use of a movable and criminal damage to property.
Bail was set at $71,000.

--Deondre Richardson, 25, Amelia, was arrested at 6:18 p.m. Saturday on two warrants alleging failure to appear on charges of distribution of marijuana and possession of marijuana. Bail was set at $12,500.

--Todd A. Landry, 54, Pierre Part, was arrested at 8:51 a.m. Friday by the Narcotics Section on charges of improper lane usage, driving under suspension and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Bail has not been set.

--Tyler Bordelon, 20, Gray, was arrested at 8:07 p.m. Friday by the Narcotics Section on a charge of illegal carrying of weapons. Bordelon was released on a $1,000 bond.

Patterson

Police Chief Garrett Grogan reported these arrests:

--DeMarcus D. Skinner, 28, Tiffany Street, Patterson, was arrested at 3:31 p.m. Monday on charges of driving while license is suspended or revoked; switched license plate; seat belt violation; and no insurance. Skinner was incarcerated at the Patterson PD Jail on a $954 bond.

--Joshua M. Aucoin, 36, Arlington Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 3:15 p.m. Monday was arrested on a Patterson Police Department warrant alleging speeding 41 mph in a 35 mph zone, no insurance and no driver’s license on person. Aucoin was also cited for speeding 49 mph in a 35 mph zone, seat belt violation and driving while license is suspended or revoked. Aucoin is incarcerated at the Patterson PD Jail with bond set at $1,585.

--Merlin E. Canty Jr., 78, Rizzo Street, Patterson, was arrested at 3:34 p.m. Monday on charge of illegal dis-charge of a firearm. Canty was issued a summons.

--Kyle M. McNally, 18, Danos Street, Raceland, was arrested at 4:21 p.m. Monday on charges of speeding 70 mph in a 55 mph zone and possession of marijuana (first offense). McNally is currently incarcerated at the Patterson PD Jail with bond set at $438.

--Francisco Herrera-Guevara, 35, Kaliste Saloom Road, Lafayette, was arrested at 8:04 p.m. Monday on charges of switched license plates and no driver’s license. Herrera-Guevara was incarcerated the Patterson PD Jail with bond set at $551.

--Sherrica L. Theriot, 42, Curtis Street, Pierre Part, was arrested Monday on charges of expired license plate, driving with suspended or revoked licensed, and expired motor vehicle inspection sticker. Theriot is incarcerated at the Patterson PD Jail with bond set at $791.

--Mikeal M. Martin, 24, Shelton Avenue, New Iberia, was arrested at 11:39 p.m. Monday on a charge of speed-ing 86 mph in a 55 mph zone. Martin was issued a summons.

Berwick

Police Chief David S. Leonard Jr. reported these arrests:

--Christopher Adams, 41, Roderick Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 11:20 p.m. Saturday on charges of driving while intoxicated (refusal) and speeding 55 mph in a 30 mph zone.

About 11:12 p.m. Friday, a traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle for speeding 55 in a 30 mph zone. Officers made contact with Adams, who showed signs of impairment. Standardized field sobriety tests were conducted, and Adams performed poorly.

He was placed under arrest and transported to the Berwick Police Department, where he refused to submit a breath sample. A search warrant was obtained and blood samples were collected and sent to the crime lab pend-ing toxicology screening. Adams was booked.

--Byron Levy Jr., 41, Duke Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 12:44 a.m. Sunday on charges of driving while intoxicated (first offense), driving under suspension and improper lane usage.

--Christopher Bennett, 41, Grandwood Street, Patterson, was arrested at 12:48 a.m. Sunday on a charge of possession of marijuana (under 14 grams.)

About 12:28 a.m. Sunday, officers with the Berwick Police Department were conducting a sobriety check point on La..182. During this time, a vehicle was observed to make an illegal turn in the roadway to avoid the check point.

A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle, and officers made contact with the driver who was identified as Levy and the passenger who was identified as Bennett. While speaking with Levy he showed signs of impair-ment, and standardized \field sobriety tests were conducted.

Levy performed poorly on the tests and was placed under arrest. Bennett was found to be in possession of mari-juana and was too placed under arrest.

Levy was transported to the Berwick Police Department, where he provided a valid breath sample of .146G% BAC. It was also learned that his driver’s license was suspended. Levy was booked. Bennett was released on a summons to appear in court.

--Ryan Richter, 25, Martin Luther King Road, Baldwin, was arrested at 9:50 p.m. Monday on a charge of dis-turbing the peace (intoxicated).

About 9:48 p.m. Monday, an officer in the area of U.S. 90 observed a male subject standing in the middle of the highway. During that time, a call was received about the subject nearly getting struck by vehicles.

Officers made contact with the subject, who was identified as Richter. Richter could not keep his balance, and a strong odor of alcohol was detected coming from his breath and person.

Richter was placed under arrest and transported to the Berwick Police Department where he was booked.

Assumption

Sheriff Leland Falcon reported this arrest:

--Dennis T. Meadors, 62, Leonie Street, Pierre Part, was arrested Friday on charges of possession of morphine, possession of drug paraphernalia, careless operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, modified exhaust system and no seat belt.

An I.C.E.-assigned deputy observed a westbound vehicle on La. 70 operating in a reckless manner. The deputy initiated a stop of that vehicle and made contact with the driver, identified as Meadors. The deputy conducted an interview. The deputy concluded that additional investigation was warranted.

The deputy requested and was granted consent to search the vehicle. As a result of that search, the deputy seized a substance identified as morphine as well as drug paraphernalia.

Meadors was arrested and booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center and and released on a $10,000 bond.

Franklin

Police Chief Morris Beverly reported that the Franklin Police Department responded to 20 complaints over the past holiday weekend and made these arrests:

--Jacques Raymond, 38, Angie Street, New Iberia, was arrested at 10:16 a.m. Monday on a charge of cruelty to juvenile. Raymond was booked, processed and transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center.

--Dwan Williams, 38, Plantation Teche Drive, Franklin, was arrested at 8:29 p.m. Monday on a warrant alleging parole violation. Williams was booked, processed and held with no bond set.

--Barry Jackson, 41, Seventh Street, Franklin, was arrested at 12:09 a.m. Tuesday on a warrant dated June 15 alleging cruelty to juvenile, aggravated assault, second-degree kidnapping and second-degree battery. Jackson was booked, processed and held with no bond set.

THOMAS L. JONES

Thomas L. Jones, 88, a resident of Bayou Vista, passed away Sunday, Sept. 4, 2022, at Ochsner St. Mary.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Fannie Smith Jones of Bayou Vista; one son, Keith Jones and wife Jenny of Garden City; one daughter, Paula Renee Clarkin and husband Jim of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Brenda Waller and Mary Johnson; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022, at First Baptist Church in Morgan City with Bro. Tracy Smith officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022, at First Baptist Church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.

After services, he will be laid to rest in the Morgan City Cemetery.

WILBERT DYRE VALENTINE JR.

Wilbert Dyre Valentine Jr., a native and resident of Morgan City, Louisiana, passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at University Medical Center in New Orleans at 5:49 p.m.

Graveside service will be on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Morgan City Cemetery at 2 p.m.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Gabriel Valentine of Atlanta; a son, Wilbert Valentine III of Atlanta; a stepson, Everette James Hawk of New Iberia; and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Arrangements were entrusted to Jones Funeral Home of Morgan City.

JAMES DAVID HOUGHTON

James David Houghton, 70, a native of Ferriday and resident of Patterson, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2022 at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Janet DeHart Houghton of Patterson; two sons, Jamie Houghton and Troy Houghton, both of Patterson; two daughters, Reba Houghton and Stephanie McCroy, both of Natchez, Mississippi; four sisters, Irene Smith of Jonesville, Loraine Fields of Henderson, Kentucky, and Hellen Traxler and Nell Norwood, both of Mansfield; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Visitation was Saturday at Twin City Funeral Home. Burial followed in Morgan City Cemetery.

Twin City Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

ROBERT STACKHOUSE

Robert Stackhouse, 95, a native and resident of Berwick, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2022, at Terrebonne General Hospital in Houma.
Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Firefighters called to homes in Berwick, Morgan City

There wasn't much of a holiday for area firefighters, who battled fires in Berwick on Sunday and in Morgan City early Monday.

No one was injured in either fire.

The call to the Morgan City fire came in just after 2 a.m. Monday. Amelia, Bayou Vista and Berwick volunteers were called in for the fire in the 600 block of Sixth Street.

The Sixth Street house, which was unoccupied while being renovated, was heavily damaged. A neighbor's garage was also damaged.

The Sunday night fire heavily damaged a mobile home on Berwick's California Street.

The mobile home was also unoccupied. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

The Berwick Police Department and Bayou Vista volunteer firefighters also responded.

One person wounded in Morgan City shooting

One person received minor injuries in an early-morning shooting in Morgan City, police reported.

The Morgan City Police Department said officers responded early Sunday to the area of Egle Street regarding a shooting.

The wounded person was taken to an out-of-area medical facility for treatment.

Detectives are investigating. Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact the Morgan City Police Department Detectives Division 985-380-4605.

The festival runs through Labor Day

The Louisiana Shrimp & Petroleum Festival continues through Labor Day in downtown Morgan City.
Featured in Lawrence Park are live bands and the Cajun Culinary Classic daily, and a Children's Village until 5 p.m. Sunday. Under the U.S. 90 bridge are the carnival rides, more food, the Marketplace.
Fireworks will be featured at 9 p.m. Saturday, weather permitting.
