CCHS alum Knight scores seven

Senior Hannah Cook earned her first double-double of the season and fifth of her career with 20 points and 10 rebounds to propel the Alabama women’s basketball team to a 73-49 win against Grambling State Sunday afternoon in Coleman Coliseum.
“I think the thing today was that we just stayed the course, and it was a little ugly at times, but I loved the way our team stayed together and had a big third quarter,” Alabama Head Coach Kristy Curry said in a news release. “We had nearly five in double figures, which is huge, and also outrebounded them by 19, with 32 points off our bench. We dominated on the boards, and it was just an overall great team win today.”
The Crimson Tide (6-3) is 7-0 all-time in games against the Tigers (3-4).
After her 20-point performance, Cook moves to 15th all-time in career points at the University of Alabama with 1,184 in four years. Alabama responded by closing the half on a 5-0 run to take a 34-23 lead into halftime.
Halfway through the third quarter, the Tide started to put the game out of reach when Cook and Knight knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to extend the lead to 44-28.
From then on, the Crimson Tide led by double-digits for the remainder of the contest, building its largest lead at 59-30 with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Louisiana College earns 1st win of the season

Patterson alum Grogan scores 23

The Louisiana College men’s basketball team erased a double-digit first-half deficit Monday night to pick up its first win of the season 96-86 against Birmingham-Southern College.
The sophomore duo of Taylan Grogan, a Patterson High alum, and Nick Burks combined for 38 points along with a 16-point, 16-rebound effort from big man Devon Washington.
In Monday’s win, Birmingham-Southern came out shooting early in the game, knocking down several shots from long range that helped it build an early double-digit advantage. Four of the first five shots the Panthers converted were behind the arc and gave them a 14-6 lead through the game’s first six and a half minutes.
Louisiana College got within a couple of possessions at the under 12-minute media timeout, but a 9-2 run by the Panthers stretched their lead to 25-13 by the next break.
Still down by double figures with 3:40 left in the half, the Wildcats began to erase the Birmingham-Southern lead. A three-ball by Timothy Stokes and a fast-break layup from Torrian Lee quickly cut the lead to six with just under three minutes remaining. A steal from Stokes on the next possession and another three from freshman Lashard Powell made it a 35-32 game at the 2:26 mark of the half.
Birmingham-Southern converted two jumpers in the final two minutes, but two clutch three-point shots in the final 70 seconds from Lee, including a halftime buzzer beater, made it a 41-38 game at the half.
Louisiana College carried its momentum into the second half, taking the lead for the first time with four straight points on a layup from Rex Hollis and two free throws from Devon Washington to go on top 42-41 just 30 seconds into the second half.
The Birmingham-Southern pressure would lead to three straight Louisiana College turnovers and a stretch of 10 straight Panther points to turn the game back to the home team’s favor less than a minute later.
The Wildcats settled themselves after the point blitz and began working their way back to the lead.
Solid shooting during the next six minutes led to a 23-7 Louisiana College run that put them ahead 65-58 at the midway point of the second half. The Wildcats went 9-of-14 from the floor during that stretch, including 2-for-2 from the free throw line, to put themselves in good position to pick up their first win of the season.
The Wildcats had the lead, and with by far their best free-throw shooting performance of the season, Louisiana College iced the game from the line during the final two minutes. The Wildcats went 11-for-12 from the line in the final 1:42 of the game and 22-of-23 for the night, compared to an 11-for-20 effort from Birmingham-Southern.
Washington had one of his best games for Louisiana College with his first double-double of the season. Grogan led the Wildcats with 23 points, Burks finished with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting, and Lejawon Leblanc was the fourth Wildcat in double digits with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Stokes added seven points and seven assists. In addition to his point total, Grogan had two rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Wildcats return to American Southwest Conference play later this week at Rapides Coliseum, facing Sul Ross State University Thursday at 7:30 pm. They then host Howard Payne University Saturday at 4 p.m. in their final game before Christmas. This weekend’s games are the last home games for the Wildcats until Jan. 18.

—Leonard A. Yarborough, 56, of Egle Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 11 p.m. Monday on charges of DWI second offense, no driver’s license and no turn signal.

A patrol officer in the area of Federal Avenue and Onstead Street observed a vehicle fail to use its turn signal while turning on to Federal Avenue. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver, Yarborough, did not have a valid driver's license, Blair said.

Yarborough appeared intoxicated and performed poorly on a field sobriety test, Blair said. Yarborough registered 0.187 grams-percent blood alcohol content on a chemical test for intoxication. Yarborough was jailed.

Also, Robertson held an active warrant through the state of Texas for a parole violation. Robertson was jailed.

—Chance J. Boudreaux, 23, of Railroad Avenue in Patterson, was arrested at 3:09 p.m. Monday on a warrant charging him with failure to pay fines.

—Jina Mingo, 52, of Bowman Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 6:42 p.m. Monday on charges of resisting an officer by giving false information and on a warrant for failure to appear on a charge of theft.

Narcotics detectives conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Fifth and Everett streets in Morgan City after observing the driver fail to signal a turn. Detectives identified the driver as Jones and a passenger as Mingo. They also observed a toddler in the vehicle who was not in a child safety seat.

While speaking with Jones, detectives observed a pill bottle in her purse and found that it contained a Xanax pill. Jones was unable to provide a prescription for the drug, Hebert said.

Mingo attempted to give detectives false information about her identity. After positively identifying Mingo, detectives located the active warrant for her arrest. Jones and Mingo were jailed with no bail set.

Menorah lightings around the world for Hanukkah

Public menorah lightings for the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah are planned around the world in locations ranging from ski towns and Caribbean islands to famous landmarks and sports arenas.
Hanukkah begins Tuesday night and lasts for eight days.
If you’re traveling or vacationing during the holiday, there may be a menorah lighting near you. The Jewish outreach organization Chabad-Lubavitch plans Hanukkah events in hundreds of cities, from the 50 U.S. states to 100 countries.
Celebrations in Vail, Colorado, will include menorahs made from skis. In New Mexico, organizers hope to create a one-of-a-kind menorah made from hot-air balloons on Dec. 17 in Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta Park, which hosts the International Balloon Fiesta each October. Vacationers in destinations like Cancun, Mexico, and Aruba will also have menorah lightings to attend, along with one in Curacao, home to the oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere dating to 1732.
Many ceremonies will take place in front of landmarks, including the White House in Washington, D.C., Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Kremlin in Moscow and Germany’s Brandenburg Gate. London’s Trafalgar Square will host a 30-foot menorah outfitted with specially designed environmentally friendly bulbs, commissioned by the London Climate Change Agency.
The world’s largest menorah, standing 36-feet high, will be lit just outside Central Park in New York City across from the Plaza Hotel at Grand Army Plaza. That menorah lighting began in 1977 and marks its 40th consecutive year this month.
Sports arenas are also hosting Hanukkah events, including the NBA arenas of the Brooklyn Nets, Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Phoenix Suns and Atlanta Hawks; the NHL arenas of the Arizona Coyotes, New York Islanders, Nashville Predators, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils and Columbus Blue Jackets; and the NFL stadium of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Thousands of people are expected Dec. 18 for a Hanukkah concert and menorah lighting at Gulfstream Park, the horse racing track in Hallandale Beach, Florida, near Miami.
Elsewhere around the world, events are expected in countries ranging from Australia to Laos to Uganda to Argentina.
Listings by location may be found at www.Chabad.org/Hanukkah Events.
