FHS FFA plant sale reopens

Franklin FFA will celebrate the re-opening for its Inaugural Fall Plant Sale on Saturday from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
The sale will take place at the greenhouse on the school’s campus.
Students enrolled in Agriscience courses at Franklin High School learned propagation procedures, as well as horticultural business applications while producing these plants.
All profits will benefit the Franklin High School FFA Chapter’s upcoming travels to National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Types of plants available include annual bedding plants, vegetable starters and hanging baskets.
Franklin High School is located at 1401 Cynthia St. in Franklin.

Police: Suspect threatened victim

A 38-year-old man was charged with simple assault after he threatened a woman during an altercation in Morgan City, Police Chief James Blair said in a news release.

—Jonathon D. Hopper, 38, of Belanger Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 11:09 a.m. Wednesday on a charge of simple assault.

Officers responded to a home on Belanger Street in regard to a disturbance. The victim stated that she and Hopper were having a verbal altercation. During the altercation, Hopper made threats to the victim, Blair said. Hopper was located inside the home, arrested and jailed.

Blair reported that officers responded to 39 calls.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Scott Anslum reported that deputies responded to 39 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:

—Ashly Bennett, 31, of Tall Timbers Drive in Patterson, was arrested at 1:58 p.m. Wednesday on a charge of theft.

A deputy assigned to patrol the Bayou Visa area responded to a theft at a business. The investigation yielded evidence that Bennett left the business without paying for multiple items, Anslum said. Bennett was transported to parish jail and later released on $1,500 bail.

—Charles Hoft, 47, of Jones Street in Berwick, was arrested at 12:07 a.m. Thursday on charges of driving under suspension and no license plate light.

The deputy patrolling the Bayou Vista area observed a vehicle to have a nonfunctioning license plate light. As a result, the deputy initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Hoft, who had a suspended driver’s license, Blair said. Hoft was released on a summons to appear in court Dec. 6.

Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.

Patterson Police Chief Janis Merritt reported no arrests.

(Updated) Missing Morgan City man found safe

A 57-year-old man who had been reported missing and last been seen Wednesday was found safe Thursday, according to Morgan City police.

Terry Scott, 57, of Morgan City, was reported missing by his family members to Morgan City Police Department. Scott had last been seen Wednesday walking east on Everett Street.

JUANITA REISZNER WEDAMAN

Funeral services for Juanita Wright Reiszner Wedaman will be Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church with the Rev. Pete Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Pythian Cemetery under the direction of Melancon Funeral Home.

Juanita Wright Reiszner Wedaman was born on January 24, 1920 in Lecompte, Louisiana. She was the seventh daughter of Lander Julia Wiley and Otto Frank Reiszner. She graduated from Bunkie High School in 1937. She passed away peacefully on September 25, 2018 at Bailey Place at the young age of 98.
Juanita is survived by her two daughters, Margaret Anne Wedaman Anderson of Thibodaux, Louisiana and Julia Carlton Wedaman of McDade, Texas; three grandsons, Michael, Andrew and Craig Zeringue; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Andrew Carlton Wedaman; and her six older sisters, Sybil R. Collins, Claire R. Davoust, Frieda R. White, Lydia R. Stokes, Rosa Lee R. Cox and Marion R. Pearce.
Juanita was always the most fun member of the family. She kept everyone in stitches with her great sense of humor and laughter. She was adored by her six older sisters and their families who affectionately called her Aunt Nee Nee.
Honored to serve as Pallbearers are Grady Bubenzer, Kemper Bubenzer, Frith Harwood, James Lee, Don Meeker and David Melancon. Honorary Pallbearers are John Clarke, Sonny Harris, Skipper Luke, James Mixon, Steve Pearce, George Stokes, James Townsend and Horace White.

Bernadette Johnson, 70, a former resident of Morgan City, died, Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018 at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.
Visitation will be Saturday, 9-10:45 a.m., with services at 11 a.m. at Gethsemane Church of God in Christ in Lafayette.
She is survived by a son, Matthew Scott of Patterson; two daughters, Bernadine Johnson of Dallas and Mattlene Johnson of Carencro; eight brothers, William Scott Jr. of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Charles Scott of New Orleans, Calvin Scott of San Jose, California, Randolph Scott of Sacramento, California, Ronald Scott, the Rev. Joseph Scott and Leonard Scott, all of Dallas, and Jonathan Scott of Bayou Vista; five sisters, Catherine Scott of Inglewood, California, Rosetta Scott of Sacramento, California, Esprindle Thomas of Compton, California, Ellen Scott of Clarksville, Tennessee and Victorian Tarleton of Verdunville; 23 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, a daughter and a granddaughter.
