Area players on all-star volleyball squad
The Houma-Thibodaux-Morgan City area was well-represented at the Louisiana Volleyball Coaches Association's East-West All-Star Game Saturday. Area members of the West squad were, from left, Brooke Lipari of Central Catholic, Taylor Walls of Terrebonne, assistant coach Peter Verret of H.L. Butler leads Patterson's all-district selections
Patterson High School was represented by one first-team selection on the Division IV-2 All-District volleyball squad.
Patterson junior Briyanna Butler made the top squad.
The Lumberjills had two second-team honorees, senior Katelyn Larson and junior Gabby Marcel and four honorable mention selections: seniors Kara Lawrence and Alayah Williams, junior Emma Marin and sophomore Deja Dugar.
Notre Dame swept the individual honors as senior Anna Morgan was named the district’s Most Valuable Player, while Tara Young is the Coach of the Year.

Louisiana team places in national tourney
The Louisiana Team, the Bayou Cajuns, finished third in the Scarlet Division of the National Team League Horseshoe Tournament in Wentzville, Missouri. The team, which consisted of Tim Gilmore, Pat Pertuit and Larry Pertuit, competed in the event, which comprised 20, three-person teams with Scarlet and Gray Divisions. Team Louisiana finished with a record of 16.5-10.5. Team Missouri won first place in the Scarlet Division, while Team Iowa was second.
ULL beats South Alabama
Elijah Mitchell had 104 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 12 carries and Ja’Marcus Bradley had three TD receptions to help Louisiana-Lafayette beat South Alabama 48-38 on Saturday night.
The Ragin’ Cajuns (6-5, 4-3 Sun Belt Conference) won their fourth consecutive home game and moved into a three-way tie with Louisiana-Monroe and Arkansas State atop the conference’s west division. ULL wraps up its regular season against the Warhawks in Monroe — where it has won six in a row — next Saturday.
Mitchell, on third-and-2, took a handoff up the middle and raced 45 yards for a score to make it 31-24 and the Ragin’ Cajuns led the rest of the way. He added a 1-yard TD run that pushed the lead to 17 points going into the fourth quarter and his 3-yard scoring run made it 48-31 with 2:12 to go.
Cole Garvin threw two TD passes and Kawaan Baker had two rushing touchdowns for South Alabama (2-9, 1-6). Bradley caught touchdown passes of 17, 44 and 1 yard in the first half as the Ragin’ Cajuns took a 24-10 lead into the break.
Central Catholic alum and Louisiana redshirt freshman Ja’len Johnson had four solo tackles, while fellow Central Catholic alum and Louisiana sophomore Tanner Wiggins had one assisted tackle.

Police investigate robbery at Donut Shop in Morgan City
Morgan City police are investigating a robbery that happened just before midnight Wednesday at the Donut Shop on Brashear Avenue, Police Capt. Teddy Liner said.
Police responded to a call reporting a robbery and learned that a male subject wearing a mask allegedly demanded money from an employee. The subject was able to flee the scene with an unknown about of cash, Liner said. Anyone with information on this case should call police at 985-380-4605.
Marine Forces concert to benefit ‘Toys for Tots’
The Marine Forces Reserve Band will have a Christmas concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium benefiting the local Toys for Tots drive.
Admission is free, but the Marine Corps League-St. Mary Detachment will accept donations of new, unwrapped toys. Toy donations will go toward the detachment’s annual Toys for Tots drive.
About one-quarter of the toys received during the Toys for Tots drive each year are collected at the concert, said Bill Goessl, the detachment’s Toys for Tots coordinator.
During the drive, organizers serve roughly 1,000 children in need in St. Mary Parish and lower St. Martin Parish. Boxes to collect toys for the drive will also be placed at area businesses and schools probably starting shortly after Thanksgiving, Goessl said.
Toys will be collected during Gulf State Wrestling’s event Nov. 25 at the Bayou Vista Community Center. Doors open at 3 p.m. with bell time at 4 p.m.
Applications to receive toys will be accepted through Dec. 5 at St. Mary Outreach in Morgan City for residents east of the Calumet bridge and lower St. Martin Parish, the St. Mary Chamber of Commerce office in Franklin for residents west of the Calumet bridge, and the West St. Mary Civic Center in Four Corners on the extreme west end of St. Mary Parish.
Officials will distribute toys from 8 a.m.-noon Dec. 15 at VFW Post 4222 in Morgan City, chamber office in Franklin and West St. Mary Civic Center.
The Marine Forces Reserve Band performs over 350 concerts, parades and ceremonies for more than 8 million people annually, a news release said.
The band was established in 1978 and stands as one of 10 Marine Corps fleet bands. The unit comprises active duty Marines stationed aboard the Marine Corps Support Facility in New Orleans.
The band is attached to Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North, traveling to numerous stateside locations to provide musical support for all units of the Fourth Marine Logistics Group, Fourth Marine Aircraft Wing, Fourth Marine Division and Force Headquarters Group.
All members of the band are trained riflemen and fulfill Corps-wide physical fitness and combat training requirements, just like any other active duty Marines. The band can be called upon to provide security, both domestically and overseas, by order of Marine Forces Reserve, the release said.
To send monetary donations for the Toys for Tots drive, make checks or money orders payable to Toys for Tots and mail them to P.O. Box 1383, Morgan City, LA 70381. All donations sent to the P.O. Box stay in the area.
The St. Mary detachment’s main site for collections is Quality Cleaners, 1013 8th St. in Morgan City.

(Updated) Police: One dead in Morgan City shooting
A male subject has died following a Morgan City shooting that occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Kentucky and Sixth streets, Police Capt. Teddy Liner said.
Police haven't released the name of the deceased subject. The subject had initially been transported to Teche Regional Medical Center to be treated but later died from his injuries, Liner said.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact Morgan City Police Department detectives at 985-380-4605.
Police: Four booked on drug charges after stop
Four people were arrested on drug charges Tuesday after Morgan City police saw a vehicle commit a traffic violation on Terrebonne Street, Police Chief James Blair said in a news release.
—Jerry Forbes, 18, of Terrebonne Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 1:56 p.m. Tuesday on charges of possession of marijuana second offense, possession of drug paraphernalia and no turn signal.
—Braylon Latiolais, 21, of First Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 1:56 p.m. Tuesday on charges of possession of marijuana first offense and possession of drug paraphernalia.
—Jessica Barrilleaux, 17, of Aucoin Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 1:56 p.m. Tuesday on charges of possession of marijuana first offense and possession of drug paraphernalia.
—Jamal Sparrow Jr., 17, of Terrebonne Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 1:56 p.m. Tuesday on charges of possession of marijuana first offense, possession of drug paraphernalia and obstruction of justice by tampering with evidence.
An officer in the area of Terrebonne Street observed a vehicle commit a traffic violation and stopped the driver. Upon speaking with the driver, the officer could smell what he believed to be marijuana.
After speaking with the driver identified as Forbes, the officer spoke with the passengers in the vehicle and search the vehicle. The officer located suspected marijuana in the car and the officer also located marijuana on Sparrow, Blair said. All four suspects were jailed.
Blair reported that officers responded to 40 calls and reported the following arrests:
—Regina Sinitiere, 41, of Ohio Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 4:35 a.m. Tuesday on a charge of simple burglary and a warrant charging her with failure to appear in Franklin City Court
Officers were called to a Front Street home after someone saw another person inside a patio area of a home. Police located the suspect identified as Sinitiere. She was questioned as to why she was inside the patio of the home and gave conflicting stories to the officers, Blair said.
The officers located some property on Sinitiere who admitted that she had taken it from the residence. Sinitiere was arrested and transported to the Morgan City Police Department. Once there, police learned of an outstanding warrant from Franklin City Court, Blair said.
—Eric Howard, 20, of Mount Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 5:35 p.m. Tuesday on charges of disturbing the peace fighting and resisting an officer.
Officers were called to the area of Sixth Street about a disturbance. When officers arrived they were flagged down by someone who stated that a man was hitting a woman, Blair said.
Officers located the two people who began to run from officers. Officers were able to locate Howard, who was involved in the fight and jailed, Blair said. The female was not located and the investigation is ongoing.
—Dan Mouzakis, 56, of Pharr Street in Berwick, was arrested at 9:39 p.m. Tuesday on a city court warrant charging him with failure to appear for probation violation.
Officers stopped a vehicle for a minor traffic violation. The driver, Mouzakis, had an active warrant for his arrest and was jailed.
—Oistin Busse, 20, of Watkins Street in Berwick, was arrested at 2:44 a.m. Wednesday on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana first offense.
Officers were investigating suspect drug use at a motel. Police spoke with Busse and gained consent to search his room. Officers searched the room and located suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Blair said. Busse was jailed.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Scott Anslum reported that deputies responded to 41 complaints and reported the following arrests:
—Cody Parker, 35, of Shady Grove Road in Patterson, was arrested at 11:05 p.m. Tuesday on charges of possession of marijuana, expired license plate and driving under suspension.
A deputy patrolling Bayou Vista observed a vehicle with an expired license plate. The deputy conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Parker. Through the stop, the deputy learned that Parker’s driver’s license was suspended. The deputy also found a marijuana cigarette in Parker’s possession, Anslum said. Parker was released on a summons to appear in court Jan. 30, 2019.
—Jessy Eues, 32, of Beadle Street in Morgan City, arrested at 12:01 p.m. Tuesday on a charge of nuisance animal.
Deputies patrolling Amelia were dispatched to a home on Degravelle Road in reference to a dog complaint. Upon arrival, the deputies made contact with the homeowner who said the neighbor’s dog barks continuously, Anslum said.
The homeowner said it is an ongoing problem that has been reported. The deputies made contact with the neighbor, Eues. Eues was advised of the complaint and was arrested for nuisance animal. Eues was released on a summons to appear in court Jan. 30.
—Jadi Williams, 29, of 79 Pines Lane in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 9:26 p.m. Tuesday on charges of no license plate light, driver must be licensed and possession of marijuana.
A deputy patrolling Bayou Vista observed a vehicle with no operational license plate light. The deputy conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Williams. Through the stop, the deputy learned that Williams had no driver’s license. The deputy also found a marijuana cigarette on the driver’s side floorboard. Williams was released on a summons to appear in court Jan. 30, 2019.
—Niki Neal, 18, of David Road in Morgan City, was arrested at 11:31 p.m. Tuesday on a charge of possession of marijuana.
A deputy patrolling Bayou Vista observed two people wearing dark clothing and as the deputy approached, one of them dropped something on the ground. The deputy made contact with the subject, identified as Neal, who said he had dropped a marijuana cigarette, Anslum said. Neal also had another partially burned marijuana cigarette on him, the sheriff said. Neal was released on a summons to appear in court Jan. 30, 2019.
—Cory Fernandez, 29, of Terrebonne Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 5:17 p.m. Tuesday on charges of improper lane usage and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Narcotics detectives were patrolling the area of Bayou Vista when they observed a vehicle cross the fog line twice on La. 182. The detectives conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Fernandez. During the stop, the detectives smelled an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Marijuana and drug paraphernalia were located in the vehicle, Anslum said. Fernandez was released on a summons to appear in court Jan. 30, 2019.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrests:
—Fermin Martinez, 46, of Houston, was arrested at 7:46 a.m. Tuesday on a charge of disturbing the peace intoxicated. Martinez posted $176 cash bail.
—Ashton Allen, 27, of Ehrlich Street in Berwick, was arrested on a 16th Judicial District Court warrant for failure to appear. Bail was set at $5,000.
Patterson Police Chief Janis Merritt reported no arrests.
